Subject: Which country in Scandinavia has the best music?
Date Posted: February 22 2009 at 00:51
Due to my conversation the other day with Hughes and Umur, I made a poll out of Scandinavia. Vote for the country with the best exports in terms of music. People include Iceland and Finland in Scandinavia too apparently, so I decided to be inclusive.

I have a strong nag that Sweden is going to win....

I'm biased Embarrassed

I don't think I listen to anything Norvegian, but all those other countries produced some of my favorites like Mew (Denmark), SIgur Rós and Sólstafir (Iceland) and Opeth and many others (Sweden). Wait, was White Willow from Norway? Ermm

edit: I think strictly speaking Scandinavia only means Sweden, Norway and Denmark as you thought, but at least we in Finland sometimes tend to think of Scandinavia and Nordic Countries as synonyms.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nordic_countries - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nordic_countries

As I still like metal more than prog, Scandinavia is inevitable in music for me Smile
Norway has a very vital (or shall I say dead?) metal scene, yet I clearly do not favour black metal that much and only found few other at least interesting bands from there. Sweden has not only some great metal acts, but also modern prog, yet the pop music there is horrible to me. While I up to now found nothing interesting from Denmark, Finland also has great metal acts of all its subgenres. What can I say about Iceland? Sigur Rós is the only I really like, other let's say post-rocj abd related are not interesting to me.

I have to say Finland in conclusion, followed closely by Sweden, then Iceland and Norway plus Denmark far behind.

It's funny, Abba probably are my favourite scandinavian band Tongue. I don't like metal or anglagard at all. I haven't heard Samla Mammas Manna though so all is not yet lost.

I think Sigur Ros is the only prog band ever to come out of Iceland. Correct me if im wrong.

I love Sigur Ros, but that's one really good bands vs. Sweeden with many good bands. My vote goes to Sweeden!

It's obvious Sweden does - and not from the polls. Think about ones of the greatest names in music and you already think about Sweden : Yngwie Malmsteen, Therion, Abba, Roxette, Morgana Lefay, Tiamat, Lake Of Tears, Opeth, Europe, Hammerfall, The Flower Kings, In Flames, Landberk, Carptree, Algarnas Tradgard, Pain of Salvation, A.C.T. and many, many others. After Sweden, come Finland and Norway. These 3 are also similar in surface, with Sweden having the biggest number of inhabitants,as great as Norway and Finland have together.

If we take all music including prog, then Sweden for sure. But metal being most of my collection, I have to say I'm split between Sweden, Finland, and Norway. I love Norwegian Black Metal. Finland has given me some great acts. Sweden has a good black metal scene and the ever-declining death metal one (the US always had the edge on that).

Some absolutely classic albums came from bands from that country.
Amazing innovations in the metal scene in Sweden, no doubt.

1. Good, but I'm not that interested in his music.
2. Their early stuff is top notch, the latter more symphonic works I get out once all six months. They're not bad, but not my style.
3. Are negative points.
4. Have become worse per year. Skeleton Skeletron was the last album that had one decent song, and that wass a Stones cover.
5. Had one great song, and five good ones, but Headstones was the only album I'm really glad I have bought.
6. Point taken.
7. Negative point.
8. Bore me. Not my style at all.
9. Point taken.
10. Have been getting worse with every album after Jester Race. All after Clayman are completely forgettable, and Clayman is only decent.
The rest I have either not heard or didn't like much.

Norway for me. Sweden has some strong contesters (Änglagard, Anekdoten, Opeth, Dark Tranquillity, etc.) but Norway is far better in metal, especially with Black Metal and Avant Garde Metal bands.

Yes, Norway's defenatly the best place for all kinds of jazz out of the Nordic countries, but in Prog and most other genres Sweden are miles ahead of the rest.

I ain't all that interested in metal and especially not progmetal (I do like Opeth) but Sweden's also got: Algarnas Tradgård, Samla/Zamla/Lars Hollmer/Von Zamla, Kultivator, Blåkulla, Arbete & Fritid, Archimedes Badkar, Ensemble Nimbus, Myrbein, Atlas, Dungen, Nya Ljudbolaget, Kebnekaise, Kvartetten som Sprangde, Ragnarök, Trettioåriga Kriget, November, Parsson Sound, Fortrangd Hushållsarbete, Flasket Brinner, Harvester, Bo Hansson, Vildkaktus + those 90's revival bands already mentioned and more..

Btw:Since Denmark has got no votes: Both Secret Oyster and Burnin' Red Ivanhoe are great 70's proggy jazzfusion, and new band Afenginn is awsome.

There are certainly more good bands in Swedenin numbers but the Norwegian and Finnish music sounds more special and unique to me.

Yeah, Sweden probably has good bands, but neither do I know of them or do I listen to them. Opeth's growling... I don't like and Pain of Salvation, I think I should try it, it sounds pretty good. Sweden has also one of the awesomest bands in the world, Kent, but it neither will take the place from Finland. Not trying to be boasting - I think it relates more to my backgrounds as a Finn, you know, I've of course been exposed more to Finnish bands than Swedish and such. So, Finland has CMX, Eppu Normaali, Kuusumun Profeetta, Hassisen Kone, Havana Black, Ultra Bra, Sielun Veljet etc., well, yeah, Eppu Normaali is rock and Ultra Bra some kinda choirpop (awesome still) but still, I like Finland the most... And I think that Kingston Wall and Circle and such do for the prog scene, even though I haven't heard them much... You can always recommend new bands that I'm not aware of to me. :P

PS. I clicked Sweden, accidentally. ._.

I don't know what they were thinking. They don't ;look evil but extremely ridiculous. many norwegian black metal albums have covers and pics that are quite scary or freakish... But Immortal.. they just never could do it...

Their music, though, is brilliant, the great Pure Holocaust and At the Heart of Winter and the great last album with one of the best riffs ever, the one in Tyrants.

Yep bands like Ved Buens Ende, Virus ( none are exactly black metal of course, but certainly extreme in their own respect) and Dødheimsgard ( DHG) are favorites of mine. But Sweden does have the most influential and prolific prog and metal scene in Scandinavia IMO.

file:///C:%5CUsers%5CEDITSO%7E1%5CAppData%5CLocal%5CTemp%5Cmsohtmlclip1%5C01%5Cclip_colorschememapping.xml - I don't actually like Swedish (prog) metal so much. Many Swedish music (though being great many ways) sounds artificial (especially those neo- post- and math- things.. the popular ones) or boring for me. But there's of course folk-oriented avant-prog etc. My favourites like Änglagård, Myrbein, Pan.Thy.Monium.

And I don't like Norwegian (true) black metal - there's nice avant-garde metal bands, but in the end, they aren't so loveable for me. There's some kind of hype in me, too, but maybe they just aren't pushing the lines enough and not prog enough. Of course Wobbler etc but actually think it's quite similar to black metal :D

Sigur Rós, is it prog? Denmark... Hmm, I like Mew but actually I don't know many bands there :S Recommendations?

Actually I'll go with Finland, though I'm Finnish and I thought I would choose Sweden for the amount of artists. Those avant-prog/folk bands are more like.. tinkering.

Whereas Norway has an excellent prog/folk/black/etc scene I think Finland can compete sucessfully these days: Moonsorrow and Swallow the Sun alone knocks out most of the competition.

But seriously folks; we´re talking about the country that produced Opeth, PoS. Änglagård, Burst, Memfis, Anekdoten, Bo Hansson, T,G&S, Trettioåriga Kriget, Kebenekaise and about a thousand other great prog/folk/etc bands. If you overturn a fallen tree in a Swedish forest there´s probably a world class prog band hibernating underneath. No contest at all.

Sweden has the best prog (Opeth, Meshuggah), but Finland has many good metal bands (Swallow the Sun, Profane Omen, Nightwish, Children of Bodom, Moonsorrow, Callisto). And in Finland metal is just as mainstream as any other genre.
