The legendary 1972 album, Thick As A Brick. I personally believe that this song (I consider it one song, the way it is meant to be looked at) is the best song of all time. Am I the only person here that believes this?

It isn't boring whatsoever. Every moment keeps you enthralled.

As far as prog goes - Tull's Thick as a Brick is the best you can find.  The only rivals are Close to the Edge and Foxtrot.

TAAB is pretty good but I wouldn't go as far as saying "the all time best". As with many long pieces, inspiration turns to "noodling" in order to fill out the rest of the album. "Tales" from Yes is a classic case. I think "Aqualung" is superior to TAAB, it has more variety and the songs build upon each other.

I love Aqualung, but I seem to be one of the minority in saying that there is no noodling on TAAB. Tales definitely has some, but I still love that album.

TAAB is one of the best pieces of Rock music of all time.  I still like the live version on Bursting out..  John Glasscock is a monster on that version.  Altogether it is one of the defining moments of Progressive rock music.

Thick As A Brick is one of the best things Jethro Tull ever did, but it's not one of the best things ever done.

TAAB is one of the few extended works where there is very little noodling - the arrangements are exceptionally tight - how dare it be compared to topographic oceans (noodling extreme!)

Thick defined Prog Folk. Along with A Passion Play and Baker St. Muse, it's Tull's best work.

It is great. Probably the best Tull, but not the best of all time.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that Tales is noodling extreme. I can't find too many cases of noodling there myself.

Totally agree. TAAB is my favorite cd after foxtrot, and maybe the greatest song ever made...in my opinion. This song is perfect. Not a lot of band can do a PERFECT epic track, with no weak moment. Just look at Pink Floyd epics ! Echoes with a stupid boring meddle part. 45 minute of great music ! Simply amazing.

I agree - J Tull was not always ultra progressive - but on TAAB they were truly transcendent

Certainly one of the best albums by any artist. In one of the previous guises of the chart on the home page, it was the number one album.

Certainly a really great song/album, but curiously my favourite one from Tull is a very small one called "A Small Cigar" from 1975 that appeared on the Nightcap album.

I think thick as a brick is the best album (song) by Jethro Tull. The music flows like a river. Itīs changing constantly, but in a "soft" way. I mean, for example, supperīs ready (although I like it a lot) seems to be four or five songs put together without any relation. But in TAAB the music changes softly and the song seems more consistent. I have no doubt thar TAAB is a true masterpiece in the genre.

However, I cannot say that itīs the best song in prog history. There are sooo many good songs....

Agreed, there are many good songs in prog. I just think this is the best one.

Also, can we keep this discussion about TAAB, not the NBA?

TAAB is one of the best prog albums, but there are so many other albums of this caliber that it is just a common top prog album, like selling, foxtrot, close to the edge, spartacus, snow goose, red queen to gryphon 3, octopus, hemispheres, the wall, moonshine, ever, amarok, crafty hands, happy the man, scheherazade and so on....

man: have you heard IQ's Subterranea: this double CD is faultless!

no noodling? I disagree. The first half of the song is very excellent, and tight, and minimal noodling, but I find that side 2 loses the spark of the first side, and does not have any strong melodies, just mindless noodling.

Don't get me wrong though, I think think as a brick is a prog masterpeice, but not the best song ever written, there are a lot better.

Which part on side 2 do you consider noodling?

It's called Passion Play. It's called 8 million times better. TAAB may be a greater achievement for Tull but Passion Play contains much more beauty.  TAAB just seems to lack a soul. Of course it may be the disgusting color of the album cover that makes me think that way. For some reason when I listen to an album the overall color of the cover is stained in my mind and if its a color like that then I'll just think of it and not be very excited. Albums could overcome that, but TAAB is just not good enough. Of course I do like the album, I just don't feel attached to it.

Of course Sossity; You're a Woman from Benefit is Tull's best song.

I dislike the ending of track 1 and beggining of track 2, its very cheesy part, 5 minutes full of boring-time.

I like more second part of this wonderful album, and i like "Passion Play" more than this album. Still, one of my favourites from JT, but i think little overrated. Best albums in 1972 are: "Ys" from Il Balletto Di Bronzo, "Darwin" from Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso and "Foxtrot" from Genesis to me.

You can't call anything the best, but it's a great album in my opinion. I love how they were basically taking the piss out of all their prog peers with  a mock concept album, and it ended up being one of the most respected ones.

Posted By: Yanns
Date Posted: April 28 2005 at 21:35

Well it wasn't really a mock concept album. After critics dubbed Aqualung a concept album (Ian Anderson considered it just a bunch of songs), he found it necessary to produce the mother of all concept albums in TAAB.

Also, happy 100th post for me!

Not sure about that, it's my understanding that the whole thing was really more of a joke.
