I think we should have a function like other "answers" sites do where people can decide whether your review is good. For example "12 out of 15 people found this review helpful" A way to give feedback.

Sounds like a plan. I read reviews before i buy an album so that would be pretty helpful to me.

It's a good idea, but it would shadow the rest of the reviews that haven't receieved votes just for the sake of the not being read.

I personaly love to read reviews, and I love to give people feedback. This could also give non-prog reviewers some credit and attention.

^not all are like you. Some will just read the reviews with more "helpful points". Which like I said before, will shadow the rest of the reviews.
But like I said before, I thinks it's a good idea it should be well thought though.

Unfortunately I think this "voting" simply becomes a way for people to cheer or jeer the rating the reviewer gave, when he doesn't agree with it. When in fact the reviewer may have made a good case for liking or disliking the album. It can also become a popularity contest.
I don't understand the fascination with rating or commenting on other people's reviews. If you want to have an opinion about something, write your own review or just rate the albums. Why is there a need to cheer or jeer the opinions of other people?
And then, as mentioned, it becomes another level of work for our Admin to watch, police, and deal with. Personally I don't see the benefits. I care about what my fellow reviewers write and think, I don't care what anonymous "raters" think about their work. I take the time to develop my own appreciation of certain writers here. And we have some really fine ones.

Excelent argument. I dont know how to counter that.

I'm with Finnforest. There are places where it can be useful, but it just doesn't fit with the image PA wants to give and the type of community it wants to foster.

Ya, I'm not too keen on the idea either for the same reasons as above...

I've seen it on sites selling albums that allow reviews, but it's just really a rating of a review and a reflection of peoples take on the reviewer more than the album. People ought to be able to tell the helpfulness of a review just by reading it.

Seconded. Something of that sort makes sense on a commercial site like Amazon - PA is a completely different kind of endeavour. Actually, I think having a 'reviews discussion' on the front page (there is another thread dedicated to this issue) would be a much better idea, if only people knew how to behave.

^ By the way, I rarely see good reviews discussions. "Great review, X" - is a usual discussion's start and, at the same time, its end.

Kudos to pianoman for taking initiatives that would help this site opening up further. However, to the actual proposal I would to (mostly) agree with Raff.
A single rating wouldn't give much insight in why a particular review is helpful or not. A reviews discussion would do that, and open up for a dialogue between reviewer and reader.
(Where I don't agree with Raff is where it comes to whether or not people will behave. You'll alway have idiots, but they're possible to tame.)
As to Finnforest, I don't know why people think that these kind of features would have to include anonymity? We demand registration for most activity already.

We already have a review discussion thread, various appreciation threads, and PMs where reader and reviewer can and already do connect when need be. Seems to be adequate without creating a ton more work for Admin.
I suppose voting could be tied to registration but it still seems strange why you'd rather vote on another's opinion rather than put forth your own opinion via review, or if you don't want to spend that much time, via simply rating the album.
That is how the site gives everyone their voice. It's far more open that other review sites from what I've seen. Kudos to M@X!

Based on this idea, I have already though of creating a comment a review tool so people can share, discuss, improve the review (in a way...), give suggestion so that the next review of the man can be improve by the comments, or just say GOOD JOB !
It seems that create problem for some but I still think it will be great.
To prevent spam of negative, only the reviewer could be allow to display of not certain message ?
Suggestions ?

I believe the beauty and attraction of this site above all others is that it allows everyone to voice their thoughts regardless of accademic talents. Intimidation is someting we try to ensure is avoided at all costs. Anything which discourages participation is to be avoided.
Making the feedback visible only to the reviewer may actually encourage others to be harder, even abusive in their comments. Making them public risks humiliation.
I think many reviewers would be put off if they constantly received negative feedback on their reviews. I understand the motivation behind the proposal, but I don't think it would be a positive addition to the site.
Just my opinion though.

I'm with you Bob 100%, though it would be more palatable if I as the reviewer were able to turn off the comment feature in my profile settings. That would leave the control with the reviewer.
But as I said, with multiple ways for people to comment already, it seems like a pointless exercise and a more sloppy page to the eye. And an unneccessary invite for conflicts.

Knowing something about Internet discussion boards, I share Bob's and Jim's misgivings. Even if our forum is very pleasant and civilized in comparison with most other boards, I think we should avoid any open invitation for people to misbehave, even attack other members. Let's face it, no one likes to be criticized, but I think mature people appreciate constructive criticism - which is incredibly hard to achieve, as I have experienced.

I agree with Bob.
Besides, when someone wishes to comment on my review, they do so just fine via PM. And if there's some need to say something publicly, there is a reviews discussion thread. I've gotten maybe 10 PMs regarding my 100+ reviews, and as far as I know, none of them have been discussed in that thread.
If that's the case, I can't see what "reviewing reviews" will add to this site.
What's more, it doesn't take too long to read a review and make up your own mind whether or not it is a helpful review.

Exactly. If you want an opinion, write your own review. You're given total freedom by the site to do so. I don't want to debate my review with others, nor am I interested in debating theirs with them. We already have forums for discussion, Reviewers should not have to watch their own efforts become in effect another "discussion thread."
Given what I've seen transpire at Amazon, I think it is really unwise. But again, if it could be set up so that the Reviewer has the option to turn the feature on/off in their profile settings, ie, the Reviewer decides whether people can comment on their reviews, it might be less objectionable.

I'd like to add something, though I don't know how useful it will be. Occasionally, when reviewing, I will comment on some of the reviews coming before mine, especially when I see a point deserving to be brought up, or just emphasized. However, I will always do so with the utmost respect, even when I happen to disagree with the reviewer - and will rarely mention the person's name, unless they are someone with whom I am friendly.

I suggested something similar a couple of months ago. I think that it would be nice to get some positive feedback on reviews as a way of encouragement to write more reviews. But in retrospect, I agree that the PM method works well and is probably the better route to go. Unless of course you want to comment on a James review, in which case you will get a full inbox message. As has been mentioned already and previously in my thread, there are too many bad apples that will turn this into a spam fest and that could potentially create a galestorm nightmare for the administrators to monitor. And of course on the other hand, all of the reviewer fanboys will come out of the woodwork to create a love fest for their favorite reviewers, and lord knows that we don't like fanboys on a prog site. I guess it would be nice to know that when you spend the time to type a review, somebody else actually spent the time to read it. And I think that is kind of what the suggester is suggesting. Rather than something where people can type good or bad things, there would be a button where the reader could say they found the review useful, or they didn't find it useful. Of course, then like with the missed phone call, you'll spend the rest of the eternity wondering who didn't like your review, and why they didn't like it.
