after watching DT live on dvd and hearing peoples reviews of their shows i voted DT but i will back that up later this year when they do an english gig.

Rammstein come close they are superb live!

I voted for King Crimson, because they are unpredictable (not programmed) and they have a real live presence, in short: a real live band. I liked the Pink Floyd concerts a lot too, but they were much more thought out, not spontaneous. King Crimson: when they play live, it's really happening

I would have thought of voting GENESIS too. Of these I voted Rush even if it's not among my highest favourite bands. All Rush live albums that I've heard sound amazingly fine (for a trio! How do they make it?).

Voted Rush.

Off that list I have only seen Rush, Pink Floyd, Metallica & Judas Priest live, so cant judge the others.

If you've ever seen Keith Emerson you would vote ELP

Despite not being an ELP fan, the footage I've seen of Emerson on stage is quite staggering. Spinning in the air, strapped to a grand piano, while playing it note perfect, is quite something!!

Deep Purple are good but ELP and GENESIS are too and yes, yes PINK FLOYD.

Metallica are the only band in the list that I've seen live, but, from listening to some of Live Scenes in New York, Dream Theater seem like they'd be awesome live. (So I guess I'm voting for Dream Theater.)

It's only knock and knowall, but I like it...

The best live progressive show that I have ever lived was.... Peter Hammill.

My vote goes for RUSH. Unbelievable what 3 people can play...

I chose Deep Purple as they are the only group on the list (besides Rush) that I've seen perform. That was back in '73 and they were absolutely fantastic! The stage literally shook and the players sweated through "Smoke on the water", "Highway star", "Women from Tokyo" and many more. The best word I can use to describe it was passion, these guys played with a vengeance!

Rush were technically superior to Deep Purple but didn't show the same spontaneity. I found them more "mechanical" and "by the numbers".

Watch Live at Budokan and be amazed.

Listen to Porcupine Tree live albums, or WATCH THEM LIVE!!

I've seen bands like DT, Jethro Tull, Ian Anderson by himself, and Robert Fripp, and so on...

I've never seen so good perfoming precision as PT's one. I try not to rely on the power or sound of the live perfomance, but just analyzing the quality!

My personal favourites are PT and Jethro Tull..

And sorry..I FORGOT ABOUT GENESIS....it's a must be....

I voted Rush, because I saw them on their R30 tour, and have seen alot of
videos of them live and they always have this energy about them.

Dream Theater sounds good live, they seem a bit too robotic for me. I
want to see the band moving around and getting into it.

They Dream in Middletown...

I'd say Dream theater, and I will.

This is cool...

Can't believe that King Crimson are even in the poll!! The dummies at Madam Toussads are more entertaining! At least they get moved around once in a  while

2. ELP (albert hall early 90s)

3. Atomic Rooster - whilst at college in 80's

4. MAN

i haven't seen every act on this list( I have seen ELP, DT, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, DP and Metallica, but from those ones it qas ELP, and overall the two bets shows I have seen were Yes and Steve Vai) I have never seen Genesis neither Pink Floyd , and Dt live was subpar compared to their albums... I was so disappointed

Ok I saw DT yesterday. They were the most amazing band I've ever seen live . LaBrie sounded better that ever before and they all were very very energetic. And they had a great setlist. So I voted for them!!

Genesis never were among the best live performers, in my opinion. It is simply too boring when Tony Banks just noodles the same solos live as he plays studio. What's the point of that?

Peter Hammill and VdGG are always a real experience live (saw VdGG only once this May, but PH several times. And I will see VdGG live again next month at the Leverkusener Jazztage. Also "Vital" by VdGG is one of the best live albums ever, IMHO). Gong and Hawkwind are really exciting live acts too (I saw Hawkwind a few times; never Gong though, but judging from their live albums Gong surely were an incredible live act). Also definitely Magma, whom I saw twice.

Genesis shouldn't be in this poll because they played it too safe live. Listen to any live recordings and it's note for note the same as studio. They weren't as good as musicians as Yes, ELP or King Crimson and weren't  able to improvise!!!
