Hi folks just joined and done a search for Greenslade and not one post came up, the songs melange and time to dream are two of my all time favorite prog tracks. ------------- Welcome back my friend to the show that never ends |

Tony Reeves is one of the most icredible yet underated bassists. MacCulloch wasn't too shabby either! ------------- I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth. |

I saw Greenslade at least half a dozen times in the seventies, always great live, tremendous rhythm section (Reeves/McCulloch) and band has links to two of my all-time faves - McCulloch played on Crimson's Lizard (my all-time fave album) and Dave Lawson played in the Mr.Mick incarnation of Stackridge (my second all-time fave band).
I bought the first two Greenslade albums in the seventies, the debut shades it for me with An English Western and Drowning Man my two top tracks. Rare Bird had a similar vibe to Greenslade and both owed a debt to Procol Harum with their twin, intertwining keyboards.
The debut album from Rare Bird is a real gem too, always loved it! ------------- AlanD |

Reeves is a great bass player, with a heavy penchant for fuzz sounds and the use of jazzy cadences; from his Colosseum days, he could make his instrument be noticed despite the starrign role assumed by other instrumentalists in the band.
MacCulloch is the perfect companion in rhythm. As proficient as Ian Wallace was during the final stages of KC's 69-71 era, I can only admit that Wallace's input in the "Islands" album suffers from the comparison against MacCulloch's deliveries for the "Lizard" album.

Definitely, their frist three studio efforts are solid exhibitions of very good symphonic prog wit ha distinct English flavor, including elements of jazz-rock and R'n'B. Dave Lawson's peculiar singing style feels at home in this band's overall sound. Like most posters in this thread, I feel their sophomore album is their apex.

Not bad, not too bad,... just kidding. The powerful rhythm section of Reeves and MacCulloch is a major asset oin Greenslade's overall sound.

Yep, I think Greenslade are rather unjustly relegated to being considered as a Serie B prog band (perhaps in sales only) but their output is very strong and even with perhaps 'Spyglass Guest' being the patchiest. 'Sunkissed You're Not' is a 24 carat surefire classic IMO Furthermore, I've always had a bit of a love/hate relationship with Lawson's voice, which sounds a tad strained and scratchy on some of the material. Perhaps this polarizes opinion about the group ? -------------

Yes, Morgan's album 'Nova Solis' is well worth hearing and those of you who may only know Mr Fisher from Mott the Hoople, will be astonished at how accomplished a player and writer he is.

Ah yes, Beside Manners Are Extra was one of the first prog albums I came upon (that was not from Floyd, Yes, KC, Genesis, ELP, Rush or Tull) and it's quite underrated in these parts. Dave Greenslade is an excellent keyboardist too. I've only got 'Bedside' and saw them in London on the promo tour for it. Actually, far from sounding like Tyler, I thought the vocals live (mostly Lawson as I remember) were dreadful and this experience put me off the band a bit really.
'Bout time I dug the album out and revisited it I guess! ------------- It's not that I can't find worth in anything, it's just that I can't find worth in enough. |
