Well chaps and chappettes, that magic bean of mine (see  http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=55124 - http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=55124 for details) isn't going to win itself, is it?

So here's an all-new identification quiz for you to try. Here's what you do:

1. Go to http://www.box.net/shared/51a42bgc7d - http://www.box.net/shared/51a42bgc7d and listen to/download the track. It consists of a series of short 2-3 second clips of songs (all of them by artists listed in the archives).

2. Guess/identify the bands/artists responsible for each musical nugget.

3. Take the first letter of each artist's name and you'll be left with an anagram of another band/artists' name!

4. First one to successfully solve the anagram (remember to show your working, kids!) wins the magic bean.

Good luck!

Hmm... I hope I haven't made it too difficult! I do want people to actually guess this. Maybe if you shared the one you think you got then people could work the lot out collectively. Assuming you don't mind sharing the magic bean, that is.

I sure don't mind.  The clip I recognized was "Contrasong" by Egg.

Clap

I'll help things along by pointing out that that was the penultimate clip, so so far our anagram looks like this:

*********E*

HTH!

(I should also point out that HTH isn't part of the anagram).

I listened to it a while ago, so not only is my recently (and unfortunately) neglected progressive-dog against me, but also my whimsically forgetful mind-cat.

I definitely heard some Hoyry-Kone (maybe it was Alamaailman Vasarat, but I didn't think so), Egg (as mentioned), Metamorfosi (or Banco, perhaps), and I think something that reminded me of Gentle Giant, but I couldn't pinpoint the song.

I think I know the clip that put you in mind of GG. It's one of the seakier additions 'cause it's a well-known band but from one of their more atypical albums.

Allllllllllllllllllrighty... I'm going to have to think hard about how to point people in the right directions without just giving it away. These are a mixture of straight-forward information and more cryptic references to names and albums.

Clip 1 - A quirky Japanese group, perfect for evening listening.
Clip 2 - American RIO/Avant-prog. [Can't think of a cryptic hint that won't just spell it out, sorry!]
Clip 5 - Classic jazz-tinged Dutch prog... Everything will become clear when you get this one.
Clip 6 - Symphonic prog from Sweden. I don't MIND them, but they're not my favourites.
Clip 8 - An unclassifable English band which forever remains close to my heart.
Clip 11 - Obscure early English prog - for budding archivists and mellotron fans only!

I hope the voice isn't throwing you too much. If you knew the track it'd be instantly recognisable, I reckon. The band's music is largely instrumental, so don't think too much about that voice. Concentrate on the second part of the clue - a bit of googling would soon see you right!

Nobody's got clip 2 right yet. Absolute Zero is a good guess, but not the right one.

Spot on.

And yes, the final answer is Soft Machine! Well done!

So that means the only clip that's yet to be identified is the last one. And as we have established, it ought to begin with an S. There's not so much point in guessing it now, I suppose, but bonus points will go to anyone who gets it.

Those of you who contributed to the solving of the puzzle (which I hope you found to be just as pointless as the thread title suggested it would be, if not more so), you may now collect your magic bean from the following address:

Nicely done!

Any guesses on the missing bands? There's an R, O and G all still to be accounted for.

I might as well reveal what the missing S from round 1 was, seeing as it looks like no one's going to get it:

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=510 - http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=510

The song was from their self-titled debut, and was called "The Prisoner (Eight by Ten)". It's an interesting album if you like a lot of melltron, but the vocals are dreadful, and rather ruin it, IMO.

I can categorically state that clip 3 is far from being Japanese - it's Italian, in fact.

As for clip 4 - it predates GYBE by a not inconsiderable margin. Really, I'm so surprised and disappointed that no one's picked up on it yet. I thought this forum was stuffed full of fans of the band in question! Listen really closely to that clip - there's a snippet of French in there which is a dead giveaway... at least, I thought it was anyway...

New quiz please

Correct.

Does someone else fancy having a bash at making one of these? I'll happily do more, of course, but I'm a bit limited with what I can do as I don't really have much prog-metal or neo-prog or owt to work with... Someone with a different music collection would make quite a different quiz, I'm sure.

I would make one but my quiz would be too easy. Perhaps over the weekend I will make one. I can't imagine it will take too long to solve.

What software do you use to cut and merge the clips?

Audacity. It's free, it's small and it's incredibly easy to use.

Linky: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ - http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

I'll whip up another one this afternoon then. S'not like I've got anything better to be doing! LOL

One of them is National Health "Squarer for Maud".

Not positive about the others, though some sound familiar.  Is #2 Magma?

Ars Nova... Thumbs Down
Magma... Thumbs Down (though you're in the right subgenre)
National Health... Thumbs Up

Great quiz! Some of them seemed familiar... but I can't put a name to any of them at the moment.

I'd be happy to do a quiz or more as well if requested; it could be fun. I have a diverse collection too. Not sure how hard I could make it though.
