I don't know how underground these are.... Most of the greats are in Quebec, I'd say strongly.
../artist.asp?id=2039 - INTERFERENCE SARDINES is a very good avant one from Quebec (been ten years since they relleased the debut, though).
../artist.asp?id=393 - - ../artist.asp?id=1370 - KARCIUS ../artist.asp?id=1370 - is very good Jazz-Rock (also from Quebec). Well-worth checking out.
../artist.asp?id=2817 - ROUGE CIEL ../artist.asp?id=2817 - is another very good Avant Prog one from Quebec.
../artist.asp?id=4017 - WHERE'S THE NINE is a good Jazz-Rock one from Ontario.
And for a local-to-me band (in Vancouver), I like ../artist.asp?id=3554 - FOND OF TIGERS
There's lot of great modern Canadian Prog (and I'd like to mention more, but it's dinnertime).
See this list for all Canadian bands in PA: http://www.progarchives.com/Bands-country.asp?country=37 - http://www.progarchives.com/Bands-country.asp?country=37

Yes, excellent music.
..........................................................................
Canada has excellent bands, past and present. It should be noted that the topic starter asked for modern ones, but since people have mentioned past ones, a couple of my faves are ../artist.asp?id=2725 - DIONNE - BRÉGENT and ../artist.asp?id=2478 - CONVENTUM . And I was very much into Maneige, Sloche, and Opus-5 at one time. Of course Pollen is a must classic. Plus, of course, Miriodor is terrific and has twenty years of fine music.
For some other modern ones, well if one is into Prog Metal, ../artist.asp?id=2638 -

Nobody has mentioned my favourite Canadian band either, FM. Their first couple of albums were brilliant. After that, whoops! Nothing like the longevity of Rush or Saga.
In fact, Black Noise is one of my all-time favourite albums, I must review it soon. If you're into synth-driven prog, this could be for you.

I've got some FM in my LP collection somewhere, I think. Haven't heard them in ages though as I do recall, they were good but for some reason never followed me into the CD age.

I was in the same boat Brian. Then some kind soul got me Black Noise on cd for Christmas 2007, and it's been pretty near the top of my playlist ever since.
Isn't it expensive trying to replace/repeat an entire record collection . Especially, if it's the size of your collection!!

I think I am at the stage where I have replaced just about every LP with a CD where a CD version has been issued. The upside is that there has been a resurgence in vinyl lovers so I have a market out there for old LPs I don't want to hang on to for the sake of cover art. On of my goals this year is to get organized so I can offer them up.

Has Max Webster been mentioned yet? I know they are more prog-related than anything but I think that still qualifies. Bad news though, Kim Mitchel's newer stuff is pretty generic pop music, there's even a song that sounds like Nickleback (eww).

Canada had at least two major "Prog Schools" it should be proud of...
First, it's Prog Folk / Sympho scene, headed by wonderful Harmonium. Second, more recent, Montreal Post Rock scene... with GY!BE and many excellent bands more or less alike.
and of course, Rush...

I'll have to admit to a little bias here as I've done sound for these guys for many years. But please check out BUSKER. It's a symphonic rock duo that was a full time road band from the mid 70's through the late 80's. However, they did a studio album in 2007 called "Northern Fantasies" (see PA listing "BUSKER"). Steve (the keyboardist) is retired now and doing music full time at his home studio. I do the mixing, editing and mastering as well as cover designs for him. Last year he did a classical piano album called "Reflections of a mystic Land (for solo piano)" which even Emerson would be envious of. You can hear samples of this and BUSKER's Northern Fantasies CD on my web site.
whitepinemedia.ca
During their heyday, BUSKER held many records for attendance and beer sales at clubs all across Ontario. At one time they were performing Northern Fantasies in clubs with a quad sound system and a multi media stage show that included slide shows and 16mm film projected on back stage screens. They toured almost every summer out to the east coast and did one west coast tour. Occasionally they played gigs in Michigan to great accolades. The best thing about them other than their talent is their diversity. Truly combining the elements of symphonic rock, jazz and folk, they have one of the most unique Canadian voices in the Canadian progressive muisc scene.
I've made an offer in another of the forums and I'll make it here. The first 10 people who reply that they are willing to submit a review to PA will recieve a free copy of the "Northern Fantasies" CD. I've already received one response so I have 9 left.

Red Sand, Sense, the D Project, Ken Baird from beautiful Dundas Ontario, Ere G and Hamadryad. But there are probably more prog fans per capita in the province of Quebec than anywhere else.

And I would be remiss if I didn't mention my recent favourite from Quebec - Leitmotiv. Their debut Entangled brings back memories of Genesis / Maneige / and many others. And you can download or buy the album at http://www.leitmotiv.ca/ at very good prices Well worth the time for lovers of piano/keyboard prog. Now I should really decide which MP3(s) I should suggest for Admin's upload (as authorized by the group).
