Hey,
I just bought the "4 picture disc, 2LP, Gatefold" version of Lateralus by Tool and there's a weird error in the track list. The track list should be:

1. The Grudge (8:36)
2. Eon Blue Apocalypse (1:04)
3. The Patient (7:14)
4. Mantra (1:12)
5. Schism (6:47)
6. Parabol (3:04)
7. Parabola (6:03)
8. Ticks & Leeches (8:10)
9. Lateralus (9:24)
10. Disposition (4:46)
11. Reflection (11:07)
12. Triad (8:46)
13. Faaip De Oiad ("Secret" track)

but on the record it's:

Side A

1. The Grudge (8:36)
2. Eon Blue Apocalypse (1:04)
3. The Patient (7:14)
4. Mantra (1:12)

Side B

5. Schism (6:47)
6. Parabol (3:04)
7. Parabola (6:03)
8. Disposition (4:46)

Side C

9. Ticks & Leeches (8:10)
10. Lateralus (9:24)

Side D

11. Reflection (11:07)
12. Triad (8:46)
13. Faaip De Oiad

Why the strange tracklist goof? Now Disposition doesn't flow into Reflection like it should... Cry

I would suggest it all about the time limitation of vinyl. Reflection and Triad are best part of 20 minutes alone on side 4. How long is Faaip De Oiad?

That would appear to be the reason.

I got the vinyl edition mainly for the cool artwork and collectors value. If you want a truly immersive listening experience you're going to listen to the CD version anyway ... better quality, no changing sides.Smile

My copy is the same. It was intentional. Of course the Tool conspiracy theorist wackos started giving there own reasons for why the tracklisting was different (cryptic messages, hidden meanings, puzzles, etc.), but the reality is this: Vinyl sucks nowadays when it comes to the listening experience. Compact disc allowes a completely immersive experience without any breaks and it also holds more information. The only way to get all of the long tracks on La te ra lus to fit into the vinyl format was to rearrange some tracks. It's unfortunate, but . . .

I just got the vinyl because it's goregous. I've never put it onto my turntable, and I probably never will. It's a good collector's piece for the die-hard Tool fans like myself, but it isn't the ideal way to actually listen to La te ra lus.

I've been disappointed some and surprised other times with newer vinyls. Some sound flawless and others are sort of meh. Sadly, lateralus was in the meh category...

Why didn't they just move "Faaip de Oiad" to side B and then get all of "Disposition/Reflection/Triad" on all of side D? Or is there not even enough space on a vinyl side to have around 24 minutes of music?

Technically there is enough space for 24 minutes, but the quality degrades as you approach the center of the disc. Typically, on audiophile vinyl recordings you won't see more than 20 minutes of playing time (unless for epics that exceed 20 minutes of course, then they don't have a choice).

I guess re-arranging songs on Vynil is something that always will happen due to time restraints (I have bought the Vynil version of the last Riverside live album and the CD and LP tracklists are totally different as well), but this seems to be a bit off. I personally don't own this vynil version (I would buy it if I found it though!) but having the songs in that order just seems a bit wrong...

I prefer vinyl over CD, but I would never buy a vinyl of a modern band.  The only reason it's better is because people tend to **** everything up when they remaster it, CDs are the original release now anyway.
