Hailed as the "wunder-kid" of Hollywood, this young man is one hell of a director. My pick goes to There will be blood... a perfect movie in my opinion.

| I haven't seen Sydney (Hard Eight) yet, but I loved the other films. They were each very different and very well done. At one point Magnolia was my favorite. Then it was the brilliant Boogie Nights. However, I am going with There Will be Blood. It was so fantastic. I didn't understand why people only cared for DDL's performance. The whole movie was friggin awesome. I feel like it was a step back (and forward) to when there were incredible hollywood epics that were not only excellently acted with great story, but also had exciting visuals and landscapes that opened the mind and eyes to a whole new level of crazy madness. Thats what I got out of TWBB. So thats where my vote lies. |

Magnolia is one of the worst pieces of tripe I've ever watched. He wanted to make a Robert Altman film but couldn't stop showing off his camera movements to say "Look, I can be like Scorsese too!" and wound up with an oppressively boring version of the classic Short Cuts. HOWEVER, Boogie Nights is a successful attempt to make an Altman-esque film, and There Will Be Blood is one of the best movies of this decade. TWBB hands down. |

| The only relatable comparison I've ever seen between Short Cuts and Magnolia I've seen is that they're both ensemble films with interconnecting paths and story. So I guess Short Cuts is Altman's rip off of Nashville? |

Both try to paint a portrait of Los Angelesby showing us inverted, self-involved characters who eventually cross paths and ultimately craft a sort of tapestry. The difference between the two is that Short Cuts succeeds. |

I´ve yet to see Short Cuts, but I do not agree with you about Magnolia being a bad movie. Having said that I´m not sure if it´s as good as some sometimes make it out to believe (I´ve heard statments such as "Best movie of the ´90")... but it is good!!! ------------- "You want me to play what, Robert?"

The only other one I've seen is Magnolia, which I mostly really enjoyed as a portrait of sadness. The themes of regret and wasting your life really resonate with me because I am emo and lame. But the first and last 10 minutes, the more nonsensical moments, and the damn Aimee Mann sing-a-long were beyond the pale. I almost turned it off at the beginning because there is nothing I hate more than urban legends and 1 verse of a bad cover of a Beatles song repeated for 5 minutes.
