I'm thinking of installing Ubuntu on my laptop which already has Vista so that I may dual boot. Does anyone here have any experience with that and would you recommend it?

I dual boot Ubuntu/Vista on my home box and run Ubuntu exclusively at work. Any questions, I can probably help you out. And yes, Ubuntu rocks and is highly recommended. |

Rather than dual-boot, I run a Linux virtual machine using http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VMware - vmware . This allows me to run both OSs simultaneously. However, since I only needed linux so I could remotely control another linux-based system over a network, I now use http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xming - Xming to open X-Windows processes on my XP PC - that took a few minutes to download and install and does not require creating a Unix partition. ------------- What? |

| A nice alternative to VMWare is Sun's Virtualbox ( http://www.virtualbox.org - http://www.virtualbox.org ). I use it to run XP from a Linux host (opposite from Dean). |

That certainly is the nice part.  I don't think it quite has all the bells and whistles vmware has, but it certainly meets my (admittedly limited) needs. |

Are you actually having a good Vista experience. I run it on one machine at home but haven't really formed an opinion on it. I've been through most of the Windows since 3.1. It's the OS I've been using for years. MS DOS pre Windows veteran here... ------------- Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I don't really have any problems with Vista, I'd just like to be able to run something that doesn't require as much power to run. That also makes it counterproductive to run a virtual linux machine although thanks for the suggestion. I plan on getting around to finally doing it this weekend.

| Don't use Ubuntu, I'm a Fedora man myself, So I only know that Grub makes a dual boot system fairly straight forward when installing Fedora. Word of advice though, if you are going to make a dual boot system, I would recommend you make an image of the system before you install linux, because if it stuffs up you are going to lose the ability to boot Windows. |

I finally got around to it and I'm posting this using Ubuntu 8.10. It's pretty neeat. Unfortunately it's late so I haven't had much time to fiddle around with Ubuntu but I'm very excited about it  . Both OS's work just fine.

My main beef with Vista is that it doesn't run programs properly that I've quite happy with and paid good money for. I have yet to experience alternative operating system to MS DOS/Windows, but computer geek that I am I should probably get off my butt and try. I have this old CDROM by Peter Gabriel that hasn't worked since Windows 3.1. I'd love to get that to run if any of these alternative operating systems would do it... ------------- Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...
