I am aware that this is a bizaar question but it stems from an argument between a friend and I.  He insists that A is the better letter and his polling data of people within earshot seemed to back him up.  For the record my contention was that neither was "better", think I was trying to make a point about ridiculous comparisons actually.

I'll clear this up by making the best argument for "O" and against "A."

- "A" is a word by itself which makes it think it's better than all the other letters except for "I" when everyone knows it isn't.
- "O" seems like a classier letter
- You can make a face :O with the letter "O" but "A" can't do anything
-  "O" is "o" capitalized which makes sense. "A" looks nothing like "a"
- In both "goad" and "goat" (two unquestionably awesome words) the "O" comes before the "A," thus displaying it's dominance so that it may attract a suitable mate such as "k"
- Cheerios
- The Letter People version of "O" has something undoubtedly intelligent to say (hence the open mouth) while "A" just looks like a brat http://www.geocities.com/letterfolks/lp_stickers.jpg - http://www.geocities.com/letterfolks/lp_stickers.jpg
- Throw a line on the "O" and you get "Q," stretch it out and you get "0," put a belt around it and you get "8." That's versatility.

If anyone wants to argue for the sake of "A" I will gladly take up that battle of wits and you shan't emerge unscathed.

Good luck dressing up matters of liking with arguments!

I think that anyone has his own associations with both letters. The A may be rigid where the O is flexible, linear versus round, black versus blue (according to Rimbaud who assigned colours to the vowels), a one-letter word versus a no-word letter (in English, not in Dutch), etcetera.

I like the A a bit more, so I draw the score equal without adding argumentsStern Smile.

Tough one! I like 'O' because it's more open than 'A', but on the other hand I like 'A' because it's more stable than 'O'. I really wish I could decide, but I can't. I just can't! Cry

clearly A is a male symbol and O is female, so it depends on which you relate to..  and A isn't the only letter that is also a word; B and bee, C and see, J and jay, R and are, T and tea, U and you, Y and why.

I'm kind of partial to the O because it is the first letter in orgasm. Big smile

Also, the letter "a" refers to Portugese and Spanish females. 'Nuff said mate

Those are homophones, not the actual words. I stand by my statement. But you forgot Z as the heavily French-accented pronunciation of "the."

Liking "A" because it's the first letter of your name is a very biased and narrow-minded thing to say. I would have expected better from progarchives but it seems as though the civility that was present when I joined a few weeks ago has disappeared. While the letter "a" may refer to Portugese and Spanish females, Slartibartfast pointed out "O" starts the word "orgasm" and Atavachron pointed out "O" is female. And lastly, you can exclaim "OOOOO" whilst engaging in activities leading to orgasm. The sexuality of the two letters clearly goes in O's favor.

Gotta go with a.

In the languages I can understand to some extent, with "a" you can make ä, à, â, å, and even æ.

O has only got ö and Ø.

Go a.

This is terrible. You're all just racist against newbies. If I had supported a initially everyone would say "hey this guy's superlame. Let's all vote for "O" because we hate this guy and want to ostracize him from our fora even though we should be a nice group of interneters and welcome him with open arms."

Your more likely to say "Ah!Ah!AAAAH!" . "OOOOO" is what you hear when a lady recognises a nice dress she wants. Or if the male gives her a pleasant surprise.

O is better.  It is smoother, less complicated than A, and in general it isn't even obnoxious like A.    It forms a perfect circle, but even when it doesn't it still looks perfect.  You know what word A goes with "ASS".  Because that is what the letter A is.  O is pure beauty.

I rest my case. Omnipotently organic, omnivorous and (ewwww) obligated to oblige you with the obvious observation.  O = Osome.

I wanted to say that I prefer O cause it's the first letter in my name but The Captain rejected that kind of arguments ! Therefore I will justify my vote by saying that O is what she says when you take off your pants and she discovers it is shorter than she expected !

Please don't take this too personal, let it be just a choice between the A and the O. I have never been part of any incrowd in my whole life and, even if I am to stay alive 'til I have passed the one hundred year-mark, I never will be.
By the way, now that I'm writing this, the O is on the lead.

Sorry. I suppose I should have made it explicitly clear that everything I say on this thread should not be taken seriously. As manofmystery pointed out, this is about ridiculous comparisons and the whole thing should be read as tongue in cheek.

I'd never enter a battle of wits due to my being unarmed; I will, however, state categorically that you are in fact incorrect, that "A" is the superior letter, then withdraw with an enigmatic smile on my face & leave you to ponder the reason I actually voted for "O"

Can't spell Progressive Rock without an O...

God damn it, we need more A support. I mean, who is first in line? A! Who starred as the lead character in the classic arcade game "Asteroids!"? A! Why are you people on the losing side, here? Vote "A"for a progressive and peaceful future.

"A" not only has more stability, but it also has itself positioned and pointing to the sky indefinitely. Those who wish to slander poor "A" for his wayward and estranged illegitimate child "a" haven't put the issues that are actually important up front. These trendy fascists are polluting our gene pools and should be institutionalized and learned in the ways of "A".

"O" is too apt to roll down the hill, while "A" can shoot for the stars. Don't argue with progress. We forge "A" new path, not "O" new path. Some foolish pundits have erroneously stressed the comical notion that the lecherous "O" is more versatile than our good friend "A". They ignore basic principles. Why, flip "A" upside down and what do you have? A "V" with benefits! He can also be used to point in certain directions. Can "O" point? I think not. "A" can also be implemented as a ladder. Don't come to "o" with your ladder needs unless you want a deceased carpenter, or housewife, for you d"O" it y"O"urself communists. Tell me, do you see our good friend "A" in communism? No. But "O" is in there!

A is for America, and we can't have heartland folk/singer-songwriters without that. Without "A" Bob Dylan would never have become popular. People, look at the facts. "A" is just the better candidate.
