Three years ago I would've voted 'painful'. Now, on the eve of my wedding day, I cannot  but choose the second option.... REAL love (not infatuation) is a wonderful feeling, and I am very happy that it came along when I had already lost hope of ever finding it.

Nobody can define it for anybody else. There can be as many definitions of love as there are human beings (including those uncapable of human feelings...)

It's necessary. It's beautiful when you find it, horrible when you lose it, a utopia when you can't find it, an illusion when you can't feel it.

I like it.

It's painful, but I like it.

“Love is an expression and assertion of self-esteem, a response to one's own values in the person of another. One gains a profoundly personal, selfish joy from the mere existence of the person one loves. It is one's own personal, selfish happiness that one seeks, earns, and derives from love.”

Love is great and a wonderful feeling when you have it and it's very painful when you lose it.  Sadly, in our reality you can't have happiness without pain.  Is the good feeling worth the pain?  You bet.

True love , think for a second......... It's only available with mutual trust. Trust is hard enough to find...... The mutual makes it even more precious. I am a hopeless romantic and I can state that there is a very fine line between love and pain. Just read some of Bryan Ferry's lyrics , its all about "Heartache" and not the stomach puke kind either......

"You don't love because, you love despite" (W. Faulkner) - that's the tricky issue.

Too many people break up over nothing, let their flaws ruin their relationship (or do something utterly wrong to ruin it), too many people treat love superficially, too many people mistake love for sex...etc.

I am however glad when friends of mine manage to pull a beautiful "love story" - and wish them to never change that (like my best friend, who will deeply shock me if ever breaking up with the girl he's with right now, that's how strong their bond looks like - like you, JayDee, having happily build a family Big smile - like Raff & Micky, finally united for life since yesterday and having went through tough times to achieve that...and such)

It's the best feeling in the world when you share it with someone.
It's the most lonely thing in the world when you give it to someone without it being returned.
It's pretty good for your ego when several people love you.
However, the darkest thing is that it's the most painful thing in the world when it is taken away from you. In all situations.

Perhaps Fromm's definition may not be the stuff of greeting cards or Harlequin novels, but it certainly does coincide with the view of Western philosophy and the great world religions.

Greeting cards or Harlequin Novels are expressions of or about love. Expressions of love can turn into cliques. Love (with the big L, preferably) can hardly be called a clique.

No.  I suggest that they're simply sentimentalizations of love.

I think that you mean "cliche" rather than "clique."  In any case, my point was that the characterizations of love delineated in this thread are indeed cliches.

Kim Wilde was right. Love is..what you want it to be.

To quote John Varley: Wouldn't it be sweet to be 17 again, and to have a broken heart for the first time again?

For me, love is the sheer joy and a reason for a living--I'm in love again, with a gorgeous lady, it's a fresh new start for me and it's great!

U2 - "Love is Blindness"

Love is blindness
I don't want to see
Won't you wrap the night
Around me
Oh my heart
Love is blindness

In a parked car
In a crowded street
You see your love
Made complete
Thread is ripping
The knot is slipping
Love is blindness

Love is clockworks
And cold steel
Fingers too numb to feel
Squeeze the handle
Blow out the candle
Love is blindness

Love is blindness
I don't want to see
Won't you wrap the night
Around me
Oh my love
Blindness

A little death
Without mourning
No call
And no warning
Baby...a dangerous idea
That almost makes sense

Love is drowning
In a deep well
All the secrets
And no one to tell
Take the money
Honey
Blindness

Love is blindness
I don't want to see
Won't you wrap the night
Around me
Oh my love
Blindness

Achtung Baby is U2's best work and one of the greatest albums ever.

Love is all you need.

To make it short, love can be everything and has so many faces, totally depends on the position. It can be painful, gappy, sad, true, false, enlightening, pleasant, beautiful, ugly, cruel..

My personal experience are maybe that diverse, too. But as I'm still young, there will be even more to experience.. /delete every cheesy statement in your mind, please..

Multi-faceted, and often pure and very, very powerful. Consider the love of a parent for a child. Smile

Unless that's a reference to the scoring system (no pun intended), I assume that's a direct translation of a line from some obscure Kobaian love song; in which case, I think it lost something in the translation - I believe the true translation states "Love means nothing when your hovercraft is full of eels"

Your CDs have been gently taken from our CD Baby shelves with
sterilized contamination-free gloves and placed onto a satin pillow.

A team of 50 employees inspected your CDs and polished them to make
sure they were in the best possible condition before mailing.

Our packing specialist from Japan lit a candle and a hush fell over
the crowd as he put your CDs into the finest gold-lined box that money
can buy.

We all had a wonderful celebration afterwards and the whole party
marched down the street to the post office where the entire town of
Portland waved "Bon Voyage!" to your package, on its way to you, in
our private CD Baby jet on this day, Sunday, April 6th.

I hope you had a wonderful time shopping at CD Baby.  We sure did.
Your picture is on our wall as "Customer of the Year."  We're all
exhausted but can't wait for you to come back to CDBABY.COM!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

What I mean is, that one can love one's true (same sex) friends, no? Love is not just confined to the realm of sexuality, is it? Confused

Don't  mothers (or fathers, one would hope) love their children? Isn't parental/familial love one of the most important forms of love?

I think many here -- yourself included-- are being very "cool" and flippant about the subject. That's fine, but I'm trying to be sincere. Smile
