BTW, The fat chick with the Mamas and Papas was named Cass Elliot and the one blues guy who died in a helicopter was Stevie Ray Vaughn. As far as who is my favorite it would have to be Jimi Hendrix followed by Vaughn. Both great guitarists who died too soon.

You forgot Keith Moon, John Entwistle, John Bonham, Jerry Garcia, and all of those classical composers. Of the ones on the list, Zappa, then Hendrix, Harrison, Lennon, Cash, Cobain, and Morrison. (I've actually visited Hendrix and Morrison's graves recently. Hendrix's is in the middle of nowhere, almost nobody was anywhere near there). |

My favorite dead musicians would have to be John Lennon and Frank Zappa. Zappa is one of my favourite musicians of all time, a fantastic composer and guitar player with a sense of humour too! |

Yes; thus my use of the word "trying." His early death was sad, not funny. ^ For all his flaws, Byron was a unique personality -- though a Lord, he spoke up for the liberty of the common man, and put his money where his mouth was. Crack shot, expert swimmer, club-footed but handsome lady's man (probably a bit of a "man's man" too, it seems), he was like a rock star of his day -- a huge public figure. From his life, we get the word "Byronic." I really like the ribald humour that's in much of his poetry, including his epic masterpiece "Don Juan" -- funny, & highly recommended! That self-styled "antichrist" Crowley, as you probably know, was an egotistic charlatan. I've read one of his books on magic -- absolute crapola. He died in disgrace, but not before many of the wealthy and gullible were hoodwinked by him. If Jimmy Page admired/admires him, then Page is a fool -- a drug-addled, spoiled and gullible rock star. LOVE LZ, though -- don't get me wrong.... I'd also nominate another of my heros from literature, Charles Dickens: he also fought injustice and oppression, both in his writing, and in his private, financial life. A great writer, and a consummate humanist, he worked himself into an early grave -- thus only 14 major books, more's the pity. ------------- "And, has thou slain the Jabberwock? Jim Morrison died in Paris on July 3, 1971, in his bathtub at the age of 27 (btw: i was born on July 3rd); many fans and biographers have speculated that the cause of death was a drug overdose, or possibly an assassination by American government authorities. Morrison remarked several times near his death that he was "number 3". Referring to himself as likely to be the third person to die mysteriously; Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin being the first two. The official report listed "heart attack" as the cause of death. Morrison is buried in the famous Le Père Lachaise Cemetery in eastern Paris.

Aww Peter I didn't mean to laugh at Byron's death. Despite his early death, I personally think he did much for the Greeks in their fight against the Turks for this reason: like you said, he was the rockstar of his day, and such a high profile figure taking part in the Greek War probably drew a fair bit of attention to it - France, Britain and Russia defeated the Turks at Navarino (The Guns of Navarino! ).
As for my favourite Romantic poet though, he's Coleridge in fact: the Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan to me possess dreamlike qualities (not surprising since Kubla Khan was written after an Opium-induced dream). I tend to like art or literature that has a hint of the subconcious about it, which is the reason behind my love of Surrealist art and Alice in Wonderland 
Aleister Crowley wasn't exactly a nice man: he died a failure. He wrote so many books on "magick" but I don't understand how HE personally came across such information...perhaps his Guardian Angel told him?

Moreover, in their last Doors album, "LA Woman", in the song "hyacinth house", Morrisson has something like the premonition of his own death, when he says:"i see the bathroom is clear, i'm sure than someone is following me" |

Jimi, Janis, Jim... all contributed directly to their own demise. Even though it was a great loss it just isn't the same as, for instance, Stevie Ray Vaughan, who had just cleaned up his act, released a killer Blues-Rock album, "In Step," and completed another album with his brother Jimmy, "Family Style," and then died because of some nit-wit 'copter pilot. How sad. Every time I hear the SRV version of Little Wing I get misty.

Jimbo was obsessed with death! & last Doors album indeed.Last with Jim as a front man yeh but ''Other voices'' & ''Full circle'' were released...Ray manzeracks voice is so convincing on these albums... Don't forget the Jim Morisson album 'An american prayer'' music by the dorrs not released till November '78.Well worth a listern i'll tell you.

I know very well American prayer and i have it and love it.
It's the best doors album after jim's death. The doors have manage to make jimi's voice re-live with their music. Moreover, it's maybe the only pure poetry rock album. Contrary to you, i found Ray's voice horrible. Yes, Jim has understand that he feels really alive only when he was close to death. He has understand that only death gives intensity to live, whereas mot people try to do as if death don't exist, and because of that live a boring life. |

Well that explains why they got Val Kilmer to play Jim Morrison, then.
He was playing a gig with Clapton that day, and if you believe the (probably apocryphal) stories, he was in a hurry, and swopped places with Clapton, who took a later flight. From the list, though, it'd have to be: Uncle Frank - guitarist, satirist, composer. He left us so much, yet left so much still un-done. George Harrison - In my opinion, the true genius in The Beatles; a gentleman and a gentle man, a giant of a songwriter, and a vastly under-rated guitarist, too. Stevie Ray Vaughan - The man had his demons, yet defeated them (to an extent, anyway), all the time creating, and re-inventing classic guitar based blues. He'll be remembered as one of the greats, but had he lived.... the great?? Finally - no mention yet of a man who polarised opinion on his death, but one of my favorite British dead guys - the irreplaceable John Peel; RIP Peely! -------------

No-one mentioned the most recent dead - Pierre Moerlen, drummer of Gong, who died May 3rd of a heart attack. This is especially disappointing from a guy like Oiverstoned, who has a Gong quote in his signature. Another very important one that has not been metioned, and one of the best poets in prog rock, was Robert Calvert, singer and poet for Hawkwind and half a dozen of solo albums who died in 1989. -------------  BaldJean and I; I am the one in blue. |
