Well its that time of year again when you can't go anywhere without hearing christmas music. I was thinking about making a prog christmas album but so far have only stumbled upon some Tull, ELP, and Mike oldfield Christmas songs. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Trans-Siberian Orchestra get right into the Christmas theme.

Jon Anderson's Three Ships.
The December People (I believe that they include Steve Walsh from Kansas and John Berry of ELP-3 fame.
Chris Squire's Swiss Choir
The Moody Blues - December

Another thought: Ringo Starr's Pax Um Biscum (Peace Be With You) is a sitar-based song that would not go astray on a proggy Xmas compilation.

The only suggestions I have are really on the fringes of prog, but still a good alternative to the standard fare: Sarah McLachlan - Wintersong Vince Guaraldi - A Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack Kitaro - Peace On Earth
and the not prog at all: South Park - Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics

I always listen to Mannheim Steamroller (mainly Fresh Aire series though) and the Jethro Tull Christmas Album when I want Christmas music.
Other than that, there are albums I hear more so in the winter, but not necessarily appropriate for Christmas (Tangerine Dream, etc.)

Al DiMeola has a Christmas album. I'm not sure how Prog it is, but he did make Elegant Gypsy, so who knows?

IMHO, this has no relationship whatsoever with being a progger.
John (1 John 4:2-3) wrote:
Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God.
And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

Go away. This is about Christmas music from progressive rock artists. You're not a very reverent and respectful chap, now are you?

Which reminds me that Neal Morse has also released a fan club Christmas album. I guess he has been writing 1 Christmas song per year for a number of years and he decided to release them all as an album.

There`s a rather obscure German acid band I wrote the bio for here on PA called Dies Irae who only released one album in 1971. If you go to their section and click on their official website ( which is really their myspace ) and you`ll find a sample of several of their tracks played live during a reunion in `95. You`ll hear the most tripped out version of Silent Night Holy Night ever played. Go here. blow your Christmas mind. The only Christmas song with explosions and ant-aircraft fire.

Hmm, I think Jordan Rudess has a Christmas album, but it's more or less just your standard Christmas songs on piano record.
I was shockingly surprised when I found that TSO was on PA. Prog? I don't know, but I don't care because after all it lets me know what other people think of their albums. And I enjoy their music as well.

If you know hte Brazilian band SAGRADO CORAÇÃO DA TERRA, his leader MARCUS VIANA has one christmas record called FANTASIA DE NATAL.

I vote that you put my progressive rock Christmas song, " http://www.myspace.com/johnnyunicorn - Christmastime is Now ," on the album. In fact, I think a progressive rock Christmas album for next year would be great if we got a bunch of newer artists to record original songs for it. I would like to hear Christmas songs by Dr. Zoltan Obelisk and Phideaux.
Listen to Johnny Unicorn's "Christmastime is Now!" http://www.myspace.com/johnnyunicorn - myspace http://www.archive.org/details/ChristmastimeIsNow - archive.org

Is there an actual prog christmas album, or is it just a christmas album done by prog rockers?
My opinion is that all christmas albums are not prog....what would be the reason for them to be???

Cool thread, if there's going to be Christmas music on, best be prog. She's not officially prog here, but I've just given this a spin:
If you want to have something unconventional on hand, it's really good.
Of course nothing can ever top this:

I say you haven't heard proggy Christmas rock until you've heard Bob Dylan sing Hark the Herald Angels Sing or O Little Town of Bethlehem.

Lincoln County Road or Armageddon.

Keith Emerson's Christmas album ain't bad, although even he stoops to using a kiddies choir on one of the tracks. One of the best Christmas(y) songs of all time was Chris Squire's Run With the Fox, which died on it's arse unfortunately. I would however walk over red hot coals to hear Peter Hamill tackle something like Silent Night or Ding Dong Merrily on High (perhaps Jon Anderson might be a better bet for the latter ?)
