There are a lot of subtle gentle very short songs amid long serious suites. My favourites as far as I can recall now include:

YES soft as a dove

GENESIS horizons

GENESIS silent sorrow of the empty boats

PETER HAMMILL ophelia

PAVLOV'S DOG preludine

YES fish

YES 9 voices

ELP still..you turn me on

DEZO URSINY hadanka (a riddle) {hope you will soon hear it after got accepted here)

BEATLES her majesty

Good thought. Subtlety is a superlative that is rarely levelled in prog's direction.

I would have to say for me it would be:

Goodbye Blue Sky - Pink Floyd
Mr Theremin - Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin
The Dusk - Genesis

I'm sure there are more but off the top of my head, I can't think of them.

Apart from those mentioned above:

  • Jethro Tull - Wond'ring Aloud
  • Jethro Tull - Nursie
  • Jethro Tull - Slipstream
  • Jethro Tull - Cheerio

Not all among long serious numbers but are always appropriately placed in JT's albums - IMO
