I'm not really a football fan, as a matter fo fact, I can't stand it, but I had this little character at the bottom of the screen in 'International Football' for my extinct Commodore 64 way back. I was quite fond of him.

In the abscence of Vinnie Jones, I vote for Pele.
Crimson87, do you think you could make your signature piccie a bit bigger, I can't quite see it. (emoticon for sarcasm).

Pele, though Maradona could've been close if he hadn't destroyed his career so quickly...

I wonder how many people here actually saw PELE and DI STEFANO play
On the other hand, someone is blatantly missing:: Franz Beckenbauer ..........him, i can remember and he always impressed me.

Pele and Maradona should be excluded (like Bruford, Wakeman and Squire) in such polls , because they are a cut above. That said , had George Best been sober, may have been the best ever! My idol remains Eric Cantona, for a Frenchman to go to England and be revered by the brits with signs like "Eric is God" -a reference to Clapton?, his rebellious style, fierce desire to win and incredible skill make him a still much admired figure today.

I saw Pele playing... I was there in the stadium with my dad when he made his 1000th goal and also I saw him a couple of times live or via TV.
I agree that The Kaiser Franz was a great player too and I saw him playing here too - good times when we had a real FIFA and not only UEFA and Germans were Germans, Spaniards were Spaniards, etc.
Another German player I liked from the 60s/70s was the leftie Overath, very South American in the way he played.
And a small paean to a great forgotten player: Garrincha.

It's a pity he didn't won any WC and he did not have the balls to come for the 1978 WC in Argentina. But is one of the best of all time , no doubt.
It's true what Aktingani says , I mean black players in Germany , an Argentinian and a brazilian playing in spain.Another couple of them playing for mexico , Camoranesi won the WC with Italy. And we hace to take account of some french stars like : Henry , Vieira and Zidane who weren't French , what about the Netherlands? Davids and Seedorf weren't Dutch , were they?
Argentina and Brazil are the best countries footballwise.
Speaking about the best player ever, I think most of the votes for Pele actually are votes against Maradona. Pele was not much of a saint , and you think he did not do drugs? Pele is overrated , brazil had better players like Zico and Romário. If there is only one brazilian player i wish he was argentinian this would be "O baixinho". Can you picture Romário and Batistuta as forwards??? That would be insane.
By the way , my favourite player is Batistuta , since I did not enjoy Maradona in his heyday but I did watch Bati's whole career in Italy. Go to you tube and watch a special with lots of his goals. Heading , Free Kicks , one on one , Long distance , short distance, he was the most powerful striker of all time. We need a player like him now , Messi is OVERRATED.

So when is the statue of the ol' beanbagger's attention grabbing moment actually going up? Heard the plans years ago, but so far no action.

From what i've seen from past recordings, Johan Cruijff and Maradona are my favourites. But my vote goes for Zidane, because I've never seen anyone playing football like he did.

Since Fabrizio Ficini is absent in this poll (a midfielder with over 400 games played for Empoli and ZERO goals)
I'd vote for Batistuta. also because he's the only one from the list I've seen playing live. (well, not..really....Zidane too)
Anyway, I watched Batistuta play in Florence... he was like a beast, but he was very clever and quick... the perfect striker.
a bit forgotten these days.
Ah, and let's do not forget ZICO!!!

If this thread was done in southamerica these days, Maradona would kill the competition...
But all of us know Pele was the greatest.

Tough call really. I would vote Henry, but he's not in the poll so I'll say Zidane.

Hmm ,no goalkeeper on the list. No Germans either - no Beckenbauer, no Gerd Müller (who was the best goalgetter ever), no Fritz Walter, no Puskas, (great Hungarian player who was a duo with di Stefano). I think you should redo the list.

Maradonna closely followed by George Best,Zinedine Zidane and Johann Cruyff.
An honourable mention to the sadly overlooked Stan Bowles (QPR,Nottingham Forest,Man City etc. and England).
