Off the top of my head, some from artists that were turned down for the archives (and I won't vouch for all of these choices being Prog per se): "Maggot Brain" by Funkadelic; "Funeral For a Friend (Love Lies Bleeding)" by Elton John (definitely a Prog track in my book); "Eight Miles High" by the Byrds; "Passing the Time" and "Pressed Rat and Warthog" by Cream; "Wooden Ships" or "Guinevere" by CSN; "Are You Experienced" and "Machine Gun" by Jimi Hendrix.

Strawberry Letter 22 by The Brothers Johnson. Most proggy top 40 hit in the states since Roundabout.
P.S. Concerning Elton John, when he first came out we pretty much considered him to be progressive rock, then some cheezy top 40 hits took care of that. |

I was always thought it was "Strawberry Letter 23", although they lyrics clearly say 22. I agree that it's kinda proggy in the middle section with the echoed guitars. Love "Beyond..." of course, but in terms of prog, I would have gone for Sinner. Very fascinating track with lots of twists and turns.

A lot of songs of Siouxsie & the Banshees have a vibration which prevents them to be seen as "mainstream". Not that I would quote any of their songs as "proggy", yet... But I would talk about Ministry's "Where You At Now" (on the album Twitch), a twelve minutes track driven by an unstoppable rhythm and made of a three songs arranged in the only example of "progressive electro industrial" ever heard of. Moreover, you can hear a nice flute solo in this one. |
