I've only 'Walking Into Clarksdale', even if today I go to retrieve 'No Quarter'. I have found most Prog Page & Plant rather than Led Zeppelin.

So: Are Page & Plant eligible for a PA page (Crossover, Heavy... Prog Related)?

I have No Quarter, and I find it definitely Prog-Related at least. I remember reading some similar comments on the album some time ago, though I think Prog-Folk might be a better category for them than Heavy Prog.

I think that 'Walking Into Clarksdale' is a Prog album. But this is not the Problem for a genre.

Indeed this thread is born from my mail to Bob (easy livin) to see if I could insert the CDs of Page & Plant are goo to insert in the page of Led Zeppelin.

Bob answer me:

'Hi Andrea,

I'd say no to that one. I think ti was disucssed a the time LZ were added, and that was the conclusion. The tow could have used the LZ name if they had wanted to, but they were keen to emphasise that this was not LZ.

They could of course be considered for addtion in their own right.

Feel free so seek other opinions in the forum though.Wink

Cheers, Bob'

For this reason is important have some opinions to learn how to move in the case of Page & Plant.

I think Bob is right, therefore we should treat Page& Plant like a different entry. I haven't listened to the album in a long time, but I'll do so later today, so that I can have a clearer opinion.

In definitive... this is the problem... Because Page & plant are not Zep... But are Zep... Oh, my god...
Were sold as new Led Zeppelin... From this fact... My doubt!

Originally I had proposed that the P&P albums be included in Zer's page, but it got denied!!

So I'de be glad to see No Quarter / Unledded getting added on its own >> this is proggier than most Zep.

I am now listening to the album, so that I can have it fresh in my memory before I express any further opinions. As far as I can remember, though, I would say it could even fit in Prog-Folk, due to the strong Middle Eastern influences, as well as to the participation of a group of North African musicians.

Unfortunately I was unable to find 'No Quarter'. Certainly that 'Walking Into Clarksdale' is really beautiful!

Indeed, as Hugues & Raff already mentioned (at least hinted), this duo incarnation is far more proggy than anything Led Zep had ever produced (well, maybe with the exception of White Summer/Black Mountain Side medley Tongue)

in fact, No Quarter-Unledded is even proggier than Clarksdale. I strongly recommend you to get it somehow. Drop me a pm to get it through a convenient way Wink

Folk Prog was also the first suitable sub that bumped into my mind. Howerver, being far and away from professing a command on the said genre (let alone being an expert or something), I wouldn't argue so far... (actually an expert is already by my side, anyway!) I would have even said Indo-Raga, if it was only a little closer to the Indian Ocean than the Red Sea! (Egyptian Hossam Ramzy delivers a fantastic job on orchestration & conducting...) maybe it's time to open the new sub as "Arabic Prog", eh Wink? (just kiddin', we have more than enough of those subs, almost half of which are defined by geographic boundaries rather than musical!)

P.S 1: Raff, loved your new sig. Those have to be the cutest kittens taken from the same site (wherever on earth you find those hilarious pics...)

P.S 2: For my team mates & kraut-electronic buddies, if they happen to bump into this thread by any chance: not that I'm back or something, I still have some issues to solve in my personal life (though I already got back into lurking mode within collabs zone genre team topics!). I just wondered whether page & plant made it into the archives, yet... I'll get back to my beloved team works as soon as I get my stuff in order...

oh, if this topic has already mirrored in collabs', let me know, so that I can go there & throw my two cents in!

Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret:
Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

Definitely some mileage - without pulling in the Arabo-jazz fusion. The cross-over Rai has a number of candidates here :
Rimitti (her Sidi Mansour, has Flea on bass, Fripp soundscaping, and former members of Beefheart/Zappa's bands providing brass/saxes),
Rachid Taha (Steve Hillage has produced the group for albums and played on those albums for 20 years),
Duode (French-based duo playing ouds, cross-over from jazzfusion to techno to trad. Arabic).

Just one thing: Rachid Taha isn't a group, he is a French singer who started his career in the early eighties with Carte de Séjour, whose biggest hit was a cover of Charles Trenet's "Douce France".
Yet, I'm not sure to include him in any prog-rock category. I will check his albums to know a bit more about his music (don't forget he also covered the Clash's "Rock the Casbah"!)

Dick, I never meant my tongue-in-cheek comment to be taken serious, but you have a point about Rai. Yet, I'm not sure if we're ready to open that box of worms!

I did like Rachid Taha's Diwan album and his collaborative live effort with two other fellow Rai-men  Faudel & Khaled, before I even knew a genre such as "prog" existed. (OK, I may have exaggerated, I knew at least about Yes, ELP, Jethro Tull etc.) Interestingly, I first listened to Taha & co. around the same time with No Quarter-unledded, without a single idea of Hillage... In fact, I learnt about Hillage's presence in Taha's stuff only a few months ago (and only as a producer, though I could guess he played as well) and decided to revisit the Rai stuff. (Though I found 1,2,3 soleils album, I still haven't re-listened anyway)

without further deviation from the topic, what do you guys (whoever comes around) think about Page & Plant entity?

CPicard, to correct further, this time your own comment, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rachid_Taha - Taha is actually Algerian Smile! He might have French citizenship, though, being a Frenchmen you surely have more info about your country's relationship with Algeria! I have to admit, he sounds quite good while singing in French, anyway... (I can't comment on his proficiency of French, since I know "nil" about this language Tongue)

As Rachid Taha lives in France since his childhood and has the French citizenship, I consider him as French. Moreover, he DOES speak and sing French (and sometimes in Arab or in English).

About the Page & Plant case, I only listened to their first album, thanks to my father who even saw them on stage at Marseille. But it's been years since I heared this record. I have some good memories of it, so I guess I could enjoy the second one.

I have seen many bands definitely less proggy or no proggy at all included here , so Page/Plan can be added and like Raff i think the Prog Folk category suits them well, as the music was mainly accoustic with all kinds of ''toys'' for Jimmy to play with., not forgetting the ''world music'' influences.

Of course they were not prog and never meant to be, but their first album looks good between Heavy Horses and Traffic's John BarelycornSmile

I saw them live in Miami, 1995 i think,..was another story ....was more Zeppelin oriented, the old songs and the Gibson...............still the Egyptian musicians came on stage for Kashmir and 2-3 more songs....great show!
