1970s prog rock masters Van der Graaf have their next opponent: one of the original 6 bands of the Rock in Opposition movement. Both were extremely unique and have certainly created their input on music.
Which one will continue?

Please
: If you are not familiar with one or both of the band's material, I urge that you use the links provided and at least listen to the samples on their respective pages (or Youtube if the particular band has no online streaming).

VDGG's PA page: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=343 - http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=343
SMM's PA page: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=621 - http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=621

As always, discussions are encouraged.

I really like both, but I'm giving a vote to the underdog (and underdog that is currently leading), Samla Mammas Manna.  And I also am factoring in Zamla Mammaz Manna and Von Zamla as SMM incarnations.

Will take a listen to Samla later... and vote against them unless the samples are absolutely stunning, but that's just me being a VDGG fanboy.

Its 33-34 now, and still open for votes.

As much as i like to vote for the underdog, VdGG means so much more to me than SMM.

You shouldn't judge Samla based on the PA samples, as they are only representative on the humoristic part of their sound.

This poll is VERY difficult for me, but I'll give a symphatic vote for SMM this time!

Fair enough. I'll try to spread my wings onto Youtube. VDGG are my favourite band ever, so they'll have a tough job anyway.

whoever is in charge of that sub should work on getting something that might actually get people interested in wanting to hear them.  Those samples are atrocious unless you are predisposed to that kind of stuff.

that is something, a project, I am starting next week with the Italian sub...  taking a break from additions.. and concentrating on what is here already. Samples being a big part of that..  reviews and word of mouth are often not enough to pry people from their money to buy the albums, sometimes you just need to hear something.

Good idea. This is especially important in the RIO/Avant sub (all those diversitiesLOL) And we have way too few samples really. I'll see what I can do about this!

Although not the best track to introduce SMM with, Långt Ner i ett Kaninhål (Far Down the Rabbit Hole) is kinda fun, isn't it? Or am I just predisposed for that kind of stuff?

fun yeah...  but as we know here.. humour is something that can be in short supply with our dear prog fans.  We can measure the devoutness of some prog fans by measuring the length of the stick jammed up their asses ahahhah.

the samples.. fun or good or not..   just like the Dean axiom for myspace.. should be samples that will generate interest in the group. A fun track is not out of bounds.. but something that will make people WANT to hear a group should probably be the thrust of the samples.  Not ones that may turn off potential explorers so to speak.

I agree with you. I was just curious if you thought they all were terrible.

Andra Satsen is probably pointless because its just kind of anonymous. Syster System's a little annoying, (but sort of works in the context of album). Any other Måltid track would do a better job here. I think that if you find good substitutes for these two, Långt Ner... could stay.

to be honest.. I thought the samples sucked...and didn't connect with me at all.... but Greg (in the contest earlier) showed my the youtube link to that other song, and I saw there was more to the group than those. I guess that is my point.  LOL

Quite an easy one - VdGG for me. Quite a few excellent albums, and some 'killer' tracks like Plague and Man Erg and many others.  I was impressed by Maltid, but the shher volume of quality works by VdGG wins it hands down!

Tough decision, but I went with VDGG.

Before I get lynched by other members of the RIO/Zeuhl team, I should explain that I based that solely on SMM vs VDGG; if the poll had included ZMM and Von Zamla (and indeed Van Der Graaf, as they became for Pleasure Dome/Quiet Zone) my vote would have gone the other way.

I know SMM less. Mainly because it so hard to get their albums here.
I voted for VDGG cause they are realy great but with a lot of sympathy to SMM which are lovely.
I second those who cries for Can's loss and also surprised to see Gong lost to Area (although Area are realy cool). I probably should have joined these battles.
