I'll go with the grossly underated Scum. Probably one of Ray Winstone's best performances, the dark atmosphere and gritty truth of it all hasn't been topped yet IMO.

In it's day "Clockwork" was disturbing but by today's standards it is tame.

I must admit I have never seen "Scum" or "Straw Dogs", so I can't judge. but is any of these movies as brutal and disturbing as "Viva la Muerte!" (another masterpiece, but not British) by Spanish surrealist Fernando Arrabal? "A Clockwork Orange" certainly isn't

OK, it's not British, but it does have Malcolm in it, how about a shout out for Caligula? Big%20smileLOLShocked

By the way, has there ever been a similar convergence of porn and serious cinema?

there have been a few, like Alejandro Jodorowski's "Montana Sacra"

Clockwork Orange is my favourite of these (and for a long time was my favourite film -- it's the black comedy aspects that really elevate it for me).  Straw Dogs is excellent, and I'm afraid I haven't seen Scum.

Sorry, only seen Clockwork Orange, but it always seemed a bit silly.

That reminded me of a film from a few years back though, a french one, I think, which was made to look documentary-style as if a film crew were following a hit-man around to capture what his working life looked like. Interviews on the job and all. I think it was filmed in black-and-white, although I'm not 100% certain on that.

Hillarious and chilling at the same time. Anyone remember it?

A film from Belgium with Benoit Poelvorde, french speaking title:C'est arrivé prés de chez vous.Nice one!
I understand you  find Clockwork Orange silly. Some may find it kitsch but I still think, regardless clearly outdated stuff,it is a masterpiece.Different tastes always make great debates!

YES, thank you, that's it. In England it ran under the title: 'Man Bites Dog'.
As for Clockwork Orange: Perhaps I'd have to see it again, it's over twenty years ago and possibly my opinion would be different now.

Scum ~ it was more disturbing and brutal than Clockwork Orange for me because it was more "real" and therefore more realistic. Fantasy, however dark, is never as disturbing as reality. Clockwork Orange could, but probably never would happen (however, I do realise it is a parody of gang-culture and the mentality that created the Droogies exists in many youth-cultures in the past and today). However I do not doubt that the violence depicted in Scum does happen on a regular basis in Prisons, Borstals and Approved Schools.

Ray Winston and a sock-full of billiard balls - one of the most shocking scenes in British cinema.
Grendel never had a chance LOL

I found myself cheering at the TV screen at that very moment. Nobody messes with Ray, NOBODY!

So do I. I watched it again about a week ago, and I still found it very disturbing. Very good though.

Scum is a horrible film. I challenge anyone to not be disturbed by some scenes. Especially the ents that unfold in the green house....
