My personal choices are ITCOTCK, Absent Lovers, & Red.

None of which hold higher rankings between one another. I think all three have equal ability that can never be duplicated. Its even then difficult to sort out whether LTIA, Lizard, ITWOP, Discipline, & Islands are runner ups because even though they don't match at all against the three best, they have highlights that are achingly beautiful. Anyway, if you have personal top three favorites, or more or less, go ahead & post them. Details are very much encouraged, because it really doesn't get much deeper than King Crimson!

The Power To Believe
Red
USA live

That was hard to choose, But I went for USA over Larks Toungues because of the improved versions of Exiles and also because Ashbury Park is one of their best ever jams.
And TPTB because it is utterly amazing, and it introduced me to the bands modern music (I didn't listen past Red before then)

2.Lizard
3.In the Wake of Poseidon (or Starless)

Yeah I know, my tastes for KC are quite weird, since many consider them their weakest compared to Lark's, Red and Court.

1. Red - the ultimate prog album ever (Rock bottom is a close second). powerful, consistent ! 6 stars.
2. Lizard - the first KC's mature album.
3. Lark tongue's in aspic - the first Wetton era album. The creation of caos in music.

Honorable mentions : Islands, The power to believe, Discipline, Starless and bible black, Thrack, The construction of light. The two immature albums are also very very good.

for me myself and I...

1. ItWoP
2. Lizard
3. LTiA

hard to explain perference...  though the 2nd is rather similar to the first...  think it actually stronger though of course not as famous or groundbreaking.  Cat Food being the clincher..  nothing like that on the first...

Lizard is an album that has REALLY grown on me...  was sucked in at first by the incredible mellotron of Cirkus, and what has to be one of the real emotional moments of a band not exactly known for it... that Collins sax solo...  but over time the rest of the rest of the album has really taken with me.  Of course.. it has taken lots of time since this group is not exactly one of my favorites nor listened to that much.

LTiA.. .nothing much to say about that...  best album they ever did by far.. even if not my favorite.

  3. Vroom Vroom

I actually prefer the live versions of nearly all KC songs, and I think that the live sets released in recent years (not so much the Collector's Club, but the mainstream releases) make a lot of the studio albums - especially the 80s output - sound pretty thin.

As far as I'm concerned, I'd find it easier to mention my least favourite albums by the Crims.... I absolutely love most of them, and I would find it difficult to pick a favourite. If I had to do so, though, I'd probably go with ITCOTCK - Red - LTiA, though others are not far behind. In fact, the only KC album that really leaves me cold is Islands - not bad by any means, but somewhat on the soporific side.

For sure you have to be ''in the mood'' for ISlands, nevertheless a great album, though kind of depressive..................just play this one followed by THE FInal CUT..... and you might never come back to your oldself LOLWink

...but I'm almost certain I'd love Islands and ItWoP. LTIA and Starless are strange albums for me. While I love the experimentation on LTIA, it's dragged down by some of the shorter, more normal songs. Starless is the exact opposite. I must admit that DIscipline has been growing, but will never be a favourite for me. At least it deserves a better review than the one I gave it...but it was a looong time ago Embarrassed

Odd. I've always considered Islands one of the most heart-warming albums I own.

So incredibly beautiful, crystalline and yet warm. Truly mellifluous. Even the faster and darker Sailor's Tale and Letters don't damage the mood. Gorgeous.

If there's one album that makes me bring out the adjectives, that's it. Wasn't an instant hit (especially the first two songs), but now I really adore that album.

Discipline is one of my favourite KC albums, and my review of it is probably the best I ever wrote (or so I think at leastEmbarrassed). As for Islands, more than depressive I just find it way too laid back ... not boring, KC are never boring in my opinion. It's just that it lacks the energy of their other albums, or even their abrasiveness.

BTW, the kitties are just a pic I found on the legendary Icanhascheezburger.com site... We'll definitely get a couple when I finally move to the US!Wink

I don't find it depressive(talking about Islands so don't go cheering around your house that I don't consider Final Cut depressive), though I do find it sleepy. I usually play it when I got to sleep, but it's not a matter of being dull or boring, just the album suits the perfect moment of the day(night actually).

Pretty much my choice also... I'm really old-school when it comes to King Crimson. I love In the Wake of Poseidon, perhaps more than Lizard, but it's so much ITCOTCK part II that it doesn't even really seem worth mentioning. (Makes me realize they did that "rewrite a whole album" thing long before Mike Oldfield LOL)

Later King Crimson... it's interesting alright, but I never really warmed to it, much as I tried.

Oh, and btw... Larks' Tongues In Aspic... I've listened to that album dozens of times... possibly a hundred times, but I'd be hard pressed to remember a single note from it. There's very few albums that are like that for me, but that one... it's weird.

In the Court of the Crimson King (Means a lot to me)
Red
Lizard

Changes all the time.  I'm sure that ItCotCK and Red are my top two, and they switch all of the time, and that 3rd place spot is just whatever I'm into at the moment.

Lark's

Court

Cirkus

Tough to rank, since each has disparate material that generally captures all of their power.

Can I ask if anyone has DVD DejaVroom does the 2nd concert keep stopping and freeze framing throughout? - i was really disappointed in this lack of quality - It was a terrible choice if that was intended. I think it was sadly - the freeze frame style is like flipping thru an extensive photo album rather than watching a concert.

If live albums count:

1. Absent Lovers
2. The Night Watch
3. Red

If they don't:
1. Red
2. The ConstruKction Of Light
3. Discipline

I've always prefered Crimson Live over Crimson's studio work, but Red is the only studio album that I frequently listen to. I wish there could have been a "Red Tour". If I could get good live versions of "Fallen Angel" and "One More Red Nightmare", I probably wouldn't listen to the studio album at all.

I don't even have 3 albums by King Crimson. I kept meaning to get SABB because it was the only one whose sample song was remotely interesting, but I never did.

Agreed.  The only use of the word "first" in this post is in relation to it being the first of the Wetton-era albums.  Which, hopefully, we can all agree is absolutely true.  At least as far as studio albums are concerned.  He does not say that it was the first time that chaos was created in music, merely that the music on this album was chaotic.

Thank you both for deffending me but I did claim that (at least in rock) what KC did was a new chaotic sound that as far as I know (and I may be wrong here) never heared before. One can claim that The nice for example has done such before but I feel that KC did something very different.

I've been meaning to get The Night Watch and The Great Deceiver for the longest time, but I never got the chance to, and didn't want to order. Earthbound is okay, so is Epitaph Vol. 3&4.

I probably never gave Lizard enough chances to shine, being one of the last albums I acquired, but it simply doesn't strike with me in the same way that some parts on other albums do.

Islands is, well, the only one that remains constant in being last place, and probably the one I heard the most thanks to being one of my father's favourites. The rest of them are prone to switches, but Starless was the third album of theirs I ever heard, and the first of the second era, thus being one I have more of a relationship to than others.

Wake is horribly underrated in my eyes. If I could, I'd just pretend that Wake and Court were a double album and rate that as the second constant, this time as first.

1. Larks Tongues in Apsic unquestionably. Everything on that is pure gold. Maybe it's my favorite album of all time.
2. Lizard. I love the jazziness of it. Once again, not a weak moment on the album but the good parts aren't as good.
3. Islands. I don't understand how this is rated so low. I like how mellowness bookends the album. The funkiness of Sailor's Tale, the sadness of The Letters along with the out-of-left-field in-your-face cacophony of sounds, and the pure fun of Ladies of the Road make this a wonderful album.

First - RED. "Starless" is peerless - a piece of pure majesty.

Second - THE NIGHT WATCH. This is the full gig at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw that formed the basis of the "Starless and Bible Black" album, but "The Fright Watch - The Talking Drum - Larks' Tongues in Aspic" sequence is utterly rivetting.

Third - USA. An electrifying gig. DGM (King Crimson's label) issued the entire gig on a mail order only release - it isn't as good.

Honorary mentions - the Poseidon album (slightly better than ITCOTCK), particularly the title track, and "Sailor's Tale" on the "Islands" album.

With the exception of THRAK, most of KC's output from 1982 onwards should br given a final cigarette, put up against a wall, and very slowly shot!

Yeah, love it Heart

The Night Watch is fantastic, but when I think about favourite albums I think about studio albums and live comes separately.

1. Red
2. In the Court
3. Islands

Usually I would put The Power to Believe third, but lately I've been getting such strong vibes from Islands that I'm going to make an exception. Larks' Tongues in Aspic would probably be the third for its songs, but the performance lack so much power they later had live that I can't enjoy it fully. I've compiled my own Larks' Tongues Live in Aspic album which has the first part of the title track from the studio album (I don't have a full live version, I don't even know if there is one) and the rest are from USA or The Night Watch. The USA performance of Exiles and The Night Watch version of The Talking Drum especially put their studio counterparts to shame. Fripp certainly knew what he was doing when he chose to record (parts of) the next album live.
