Subject: Genesis albums in your correct order
Date Posted: September 23 2008 at 10:10
I picked out the essential studio albums by Genesis, excluded the debut and added And then there were three.
So that means their best 8 albums (according to the ratingaverages on PA). Your challenge is to put them in the right order for your personal taste.
I added And then there were three to see if everyone puts it in last place or are there maybe surprises ... ?

I will do the kick off:

1. Wind and Wuthering
2. Selling England by the pound
3. Foxtrot
4. Trespass
5. Nursery cryme
6. Trick of the tail
7. The lamb lies down on broadway
8. And then there were three

Maybe a surprise no.1 and the addition that although it's no.4, I believe Trespass is the most consistent album of them all, the only one without a weaker track.
Please add some comment to your line-up.

1. Foxtrot (Brilliant album from beginning to end.)
2. Trespass (Not a weak song here either.)
3. The Lamb (Starts out awesome, but drags a bit towards the end.)
4. Wind and Wuthering (Great.)
5. Nursery Cryme (The Musical Box and Seven Stones are amazing songs, the rest is just ok.)
6. Trick of the Tail (Nice consistent album, although a bit cheesy at parts.)
7. Selling England (Moonlit Knight, Firth of Fifth and Cinema Show are great, the rest is just ok.)
8. And Then There Were Three (Not good.)

1.  We Can't Dance
2.  Abacab
3.  Invisible Touch

Oops.  That's not the right list.  Embarrassed

Try that again:

1.  SEBTP
2.  ATOTT
3.  Foxtrot
4.  Trespass
5.  W&W
6.  ATTWT (Not a bad effort considering they lost an important member of the band)
7.  The Lamb (Great in parts, mediocre in other parts)
8.  Nursery Cryme (Two of Genesis greatest songs "Musical Box" and "Fountain" but the production is muddy and the rest of the album is uneven).

The first five are all wonderful in my opinion, nearly flawless throughout.  Actually I would probably put Duke in at number 6 just above ATTWT had that been in keeping with the thread.

A Trick of the Tail
The Lamb
Wind & Wuthering
Foxtrot
Trespass
SEBTP
Nursery Cryme
ATTWT

ATTWT may be last on my list, but it's only weak compared to the rest. I still think it's a great album..

SEBTP (They really had honed their craft by now (Hackett&Banks to the fore)

Nursery Cryme (I love the 'little' tracks on this)

Foxtrot (Best known for it's epics but the 'little' tracks are gorgeous)

The Lamb (A sudden left turn.Weird and wonderful)

Trespass (Suffers from 'debut album production' but includes some beautiful gems)

AToTT (Gabriel has gone but they create a unique atmosphere in his absence)

Wind and Wuthering (Hackett's swansong and what a beautiful leaving card he presents with Blood on the Rooftops)

ATTWT (Come back Gabriel.Tony Banks's lyrics are becoming even more banal.A good album. Some very good tracks but the fire is going cold)

1. Trick of the tail - I love that full sound, no bad tracks
2. Wind and Wuthering - Same as 1., but perhaps a bit too much of the same
3. Foxtrot - Supper's Ready, what can I say?
4. Selling England by the pound - Not into Epping Forrest, otherwise great
5. Nursery cryme - A bit rough around the edges
6. Trespass - I also like the consistancy and the brooding atmosphere
7. And then there were three - Not as bad as alway said, lots of memorable memories
8. The lamb lies down on broadway -  Sorry, I never got into this one, perhaps if I give it another 30 years or so.

Okay, I haven't heard all Genesis albums. Not even close. But I LOVE Lamb. It is in my top five.

"3. The Lamb (Starts out awesome, but drags a bit towards the end.)"

And, I just kinda chuckled from this, because, in my opinion, the second album is way better. Just like the tracks better.

I really like Selling England and Wind and Wuthering too. . .

1. The Lamb  ( my fav of all time, great story if difficult to understand but open to interpretation.  Love disc 2 which brings to conclusion of the story and fav tracks  the Lamia, Anyway, Light dies down on Broadway, and In the Rapids.  I actually like disc 2 better though I know I'm in the minority.

2. Selling England by the Pound   The ultimate in Pastoral Prog, Gabriel voice both sweet and powerful, one one weak track.

3. Trespass-   really I feel this and Foxtrot are tied but Foxtrot gets all the love most of the time and I just love Trespass

4 or 3b.  Foxtrot -  simply epic

5. Nursrey Crime -  Would be higher but for the production and certainly The Muscial Box is one of their very best.

6.  Wind and Wuthering - Still a great album but 2 tracks I don't care for

7.  Trick of the Tail -  Mad Man Moon would be my fav post PG track and Entangled is sublime, that's two great track where W&W has Blood on the Rooftops, 11th Earl and One for the Vine.

8. ATTWT-  this album is not my cup of tea.

Trick of the tail remains my fav Genesis album ever, and among my fav albums from entire prog music, smooth and very well arranged.

Lamb - absolutely epic - only fault is a couple of good tracks don't really fit
Foxtrot - absolutely epic - The only reason the lamb is better is that there is more of it.
Selling England - absolutely epic - Foxtrot is better only because it has Supper's Ready
Nursery Cryme - Musical Box and Hogweed are genius, the rest is mostly very good
Trespass - Very good songs but not yet in the genius class
Trick of the Tale - Very sweet but  32 doors and Grand parade from Lamb would have added some bite
Wind and Wuthering - good effort
And then there were 3 - i'd lost interest by then

1) The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. I agree with the person who said disc 2 is the better one.
2) Foxtrot
3) Nursery Cryme
4) Selling England by the Pound
5) A Trick of the Tail
6) shared between "Trespass" and "Wind and Wuthering"

The rest is forgettable. The live albums sadly don't add as much to the music as live albums of other bands do, mostly because of Banks sticking too closely to the studio versions in his solos. Hackett on the other hand does a good job, especially in the live version of "The Knife", which I definitely prefer to the studio version.

Someone said Trespass is the only one with no weak track. I think Visions of Angels is dull one that drags it down to a four star. I love all of Nursery Cryme, and think the rest of their albums has atleast one or two (or three, four or five) weak tracks.

I don't bow down to the Gabriel era as much as most people around here.
And Then There Were Three is an excellent collection of songs and underrated in my opinion.
Trick is my favourite because it has a perfect balance between what Genesis were and what they later became.
I tend to rate Nursery Cryme and Trespass low because of poor production quality which is also partly why they are at the bottom of my list.
Lamb is inspired in places but I'm not a fan of double albums in general.
WAW has some great tracks but overall not as consistent as the ones above it.

I actually like everything from Tresspass to Wind and Wuthering about the same to the point I can't rank them as for the leftovers:
1. And Then There Were Three
2. Duke
3. From Genesis To Revalation
4. Abacab
5. Invisible Touch
6. Mama album
7. Calling All Stations
8. Still haven't heard We Can't Dance apart from the hits.  I may have to pick it up one of these days just for completionist sake.
Never had the Mama album in my collection and the only Invisible Touch I have is LP format.  I guess you can basically say I got disenchanted with them in their latter days.

1). Nursery Cryme
2). Selling England By The Pound
3). The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
4). Foxtrot
5). Trespass
6). A Trick Of The Tail
7). Wind And Wuthering

It's a hard toss up between Selling England and Nursery Cryme as number 1...

Because the really great songs from Selling England ("Dancing With The Moonlit Knight", "Firth of Fifth", "Cinema Show"-into-"After The Ordeal"), are four of the best songs they have ever done, and arguably better than the best moments of Nursery Cryme...

But the weak points interrupt the flow, and can be just annoying. (Case in point "More Fool Me", parts of "Epping Forest"...)

However, in my opinion, Nursery Cryme doesn't have a weak song or moment on it. I think it's just a flawless album, every second of music is enjoyable to me. And it has SO much character.

So to me, Selling England has better songs, but Nursery Cryme is a better album.

I will say that SEBTP has probably the greatest and most emotionally fulfilling endings of all time...

1. The lamb lies down on broadway
Just great, and the storyline still trills me after all those years, some super tracks too.
2. Selling England by the pound
Close to no. 1, just a great album too.
3. Foxtrot/Nursery cryme
Some of the best tracks on both, but hurts that the sound is very "old"
4. Trick of the tail/wind and W
Only albums with colins i can consider Genesis, rest is another band, on the other hand those two i realy
like and still listen rather often.
5. Trespass
Not consistent, but it has some moments

1. SEBTP (Dancing with the Moonlit Knight may be the best prog song of all time, only rival is the CTTE title track) Firth of Fifth, Cinema Show are also great.

2. Foxtrot (Watcher of the Skies is my second favorite Genesis song, Supper's Ready is Supper's Ready, I like the rest much better than the "in-between"s on Nursery Cryme)

3. Voyage of the Acolyte - Might as well be the Genesis album between Lamb and Trick

4. Nursery Cryme (great moments but this one is hard for me to listen to all the way through)

5. Genesis (shapes) - this was the second album I owned as an 11 year old after Michael Jackson's Thriller. I didn't know anything about popular music other than the 60's stuff my parents had. I practically memorized the album. I know it has it's very significant weaknesses but it's part of my history.

6. Abacab - Second Genesis album I owned and I did enjoy parts of it.

I don't own any of the other albums, though I've got the great "Dance on a Volcano" and "Los Endos" as individual tracks on my iPod, not sure if the others are worth buying yet. I suspect I'd put Trick above Nursery Cryme

I've listened to Lamb a number of times but never got into it enough to buy. "You got to get in to get out" is a great melody and line though. I've only heard "Wind and Wuthering" once or twice many years ago.

I've been listening to a lot of Genesis these past few days, so maybe I'll give this a shot. The current order somewhat accurately:

1. A Trick of the Tail (could be one of let's say top 40 best albums ever if the second side was as good as the first)
2. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (my newest purchase from them, might turn out to be their best album and the best prog double album ever when given more time)
3. Wind & Wuthering
4. Selling England by the Pound (Epping Forest is not the horrendous album ruiner it was in the past, but still the weakest with I Know What I Like.)
5. Trespass
6. Foxtrot
7. Nursery Cryme
8. Duke
9. ...And Then There Were Three...
10. We Can't Dance (has some great pop songs despite being rated lowest)

Haven't heard the rest but will some day. At least the missing pieces between Duke and Dance.

edit: And a little tip for the reader: in this above text; best = my favourite Wink

1.  The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
I'm very much into dream interpretation and I find the dream imagery, the archetypal qualities and the mystical conclusion as examples of some of the best lyrical content ever made for an album.  Plus some of Steve Hackett's first great guitar passages are found here.  Variety of song styles.

2.  A Trick of the Tail
Overall mood and song quality

3.  Wind & Wuthering
Same

4.  Selling England By The Pound
Awesome songs mixed with ones I'm not so into

5.  Foxtrot
Supper's Ready and Watcher of the Skies carry this one for me

Calling All Stations
Great songs with some great jams working into that pop

Duke
Great opening and closing suites with some great additional pop songs

6.  And then there were three...
Where pop and prog mix well

7.  Trespass
The energy of a young band minus some of the musicians that made this band great

8.  Nursery Cryme
Maybe I have listened to this one too much now and my ears won't hear it so much; Fountain of Salmacis still rocks

Genesis

Abacab

We Can't Dance

Invisible Touch

It's not as bad as a lot of people make out. Certainly not worth more than three stars, it was, at least, an honest attempt to return to a somewhat darker sound than the later Collins LPs, and I wish they had perservered, because I really enjoyed seeing Ray Wilson live, and the show was excellent. I honestly think they could have produced some really good work had the other two not taken fright at the poor commercial sales.

1. The Lamb (5stars, by far thiere best and one of the best ever)

2. Trespass (5stars, the first one i realy liked)

3. Trick of the tail (5stars, peter gabriel wasent that important after all...)

4. Seconds out (5stars, realy great live album)

5.. SEBTP (4stars, both great and boring at the same time, or maybe some parts are great some dull)

6. Foxtrot (4stars, this one was easy to love but the love also died fast, and something always anoyed me with it)

7. Nersery cryme 4stars(this one allso hade something anoying to it that i never realy culd like i actualy think its gabriels voice at some parts)

8. Wind ad whutering (3stars, anoying keyboards sounds and starting to feel liek they did all this song before but beter)

9. Genesis Live (3stars, pretty boring live album like listening to longer more drawn out verions of the studio track but still nothing intresting hapens the band sound like they are asleep)

10. Duke (2stars, okay pop album but very steril and boring sound over produced and cant help but think of musical fast food, easy to get into for lazy peopel thats not realy intrested in music)

MMM bit of a sweeping statement there Zargus.  Music has been my main interest for the last 30 years (since I was 15) and I think that Duke is a very good album.  Duchess features one of Collins' best vocal performances.  Duke's Travels and Duke's End (although lifting the idea from 'Los Endos') feature some brilliant instrumental passages and the reprise of 'Guide Vocal' is a definite hair-stand-up-on-the-back-of-the-neck moment.  Behind the Lines and Cul-De-Sac are also great tracks.  'Turn it on Again' is definitely one of the band's strongest singles.

David Hentschel's production is rich and full, and to my ears is not 'sterile'.

I strongly disagree with you, but you are entitled to your opinion, and though I disagree with you, I wouldn't insult you (lazy peopel thats not realy intrested in music (sic))
