Haha, now this is one I've really been looking forward to. The results here could easily go any which way and I'll love to see how they turn out. The masters of Krautrock or the masters of prog metal, both controversial... which will be crowned and continue?
I hope this one gets quite a bit of responses! ![Wink](smileys/smiley2.gif)
Please: If you are not familiar with one or both of the band's material, I urge that you use the links provided and at least listen to the samples on their respective pages.

As always, discussions are encouraged.

Not one minute of hesitation, Alex
You know , i am 51 (don't tell anybody else ![LOL](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif) ) so you can guess who i vote for.
Even if i don't consider CAN as the Krautrock masters (would be Amon Duul 2 for me)...still will win easily over anything noisy to my poor ears.
DT? i guess it is a young man pleasure, you have to grow up with that to appreciate ![LOL](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif) .too ''boom boom''
for me, but i can understand why some people like them
I saw CAN in concert in 1977 ( i think was the BABALUMA tour..1977???).....was an experience and a half! ![LOL](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif)
I like CAN , but not LOVE their music.....Enjoy ''Soundtracks'' some''Tago Mago''....i said some ![LOL](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif) ''Future Days'' and ''Babaluma''.
I do own (yes, yes) 1 or 2 DT, but the only track i can listen to (and enjoy) is the last one from AWAKEN , an athmospheric piece from K. Moore...very good indeed.
Good job one more time, Alex ![Thumbs%20Up](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley20.gif)

Well, Amon Duul II would definitely be tied with Can for being the "masters"... and of course it's subjective, but I mainly meant the most representative "master" of their respective sub-genre... Amon Duul II is great and they're second, but I think when most people think of Krautrock they'll be more inclined to think of Can first. I don't know, haha, they can both be masters; I was just thinking both bands are like the "big" bands of their sub-genres.
Oh, and just maybe ADII will make an appearance later on. ![Wink](smileys/smiley2.gif)
And thanks. I really hope people enjoy these polls, and they get better and better with more responses/discussion/votes, so I heavily welcome your continued participation in these tournaments. ![Clap](smileys/smiley32.gif)

Dream Theater. Not a big krautrock fan in general, have Tago Mago and wasn't really impressed, although it deserves some more listens. Even were I to compile more Can albums I don't think I'd like them as much as DT (I'm sure I'll get flayed by some for this opinion).

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is another great album of theirs, but if you can't get IN with scenes, then you better give up. Just kidding. I voted for DT hre, I like Can, but I'm young for now, so, I'm gonna enjoy DT while I can. oops. "While I Can" see the joke?

Being that my first Prog experience (before I knew what prog was) was
Dream Theater's Awake - which is an album that I still love to pieces
today - I've had a lot more experience with DT. I love most of their
albums and even though they take A LOT of flak from this website I
still think they're one of the leading PM acts right now. Systematic
Chaos was great despite what some people say about it.
The only Can album I have is Future Days, and I like that one a lot as
well. However, I think that even if I had every Can album I'd still
have to vote for DT.

I suspect that you need to explore more Krautrock. For Can, I prefer Ege Bamyasi.
Like Antoine, my favourite really is Amon Duul II. And I love Agitation Free.
Here's a great album that I would have thought you'd like considerably.
![](../progressive_rock_discography_covers/627/cover_55482018102005.jpg) 4.14 ../album.asp?id=3185 - AGITATION FREE Malesch (1972)
Not to kick DT when it's down (Cans are more kickable), but I much prefer Can. And I am CANadian.

As a different approach, you could start with a tribute to DT album
2007
../album.asp?id=17545 - String Quartet Tribute to Dream Theater not rated
or a DT tribute to Metallica album
2003
../album.asp?id=9643 - Master Of Puppets
1.76
(25 ratings)

You might be right, but let me give you a list of what I've heard so far:
Amon Duul II: Phallus Dei, Yeti, Wolf City AR & Machines: Echo Can: Tago Mago Faust: So Far, Faust Neu!: Neu! '75 Guru Guru: I forget the name of the album, it has Dagobert Duck on it.
And there's been not one among these that I've been really impressed with*. Surely this is a fair enough representation and sufficient data for the Krautrock scene that I can make my determination, no?
edit: actually I think I like the Guru Guru album the best, I probably will get more from that group.
* IMO, obviously

You do know a lot. Guru Guru is great (should have thought of that as
one you might like). Re my suggestion, please do check out the
Agitation Free streaming mp3 at this site if you haven't already (see
links below album). Note: I do think that that is a particularly good
track. And a myspace page: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=397230967 - Agitation Free - "AGITATION FREE"
But if one's not much into psych... (my favourite psych is often Psych Folk i.e. Acid Folk). I
still haven't explored Kraut that greatly.... Didn't have the same
impact on me on the whole as other categories music. it's not up there
for me on the whole with say Zeuhl/ RIO/ Canterbury, though people who
love those categories commonly love Krautrock).

Same here, really - I don't hate the albums I listed, but they don't have near the same impact on me as Magma, National Health, Henry Cow, etc.

The only thing I like from Can is "Monster Movie". Then, I own all Dream Theater studio albums + A Change of Seasons. "Awake" and "Images and Words" qualify to be all-time classics for me, and at least three other are a great listen. So, guess my vote ;)

Mmm.... Dream Theater vs some crazy germans high on grass that play incoherent tunes.....
I'll go with DT here... But caution: I've only heard Tago Mago. Maybe I'm ill-advised...
But anyway, I'd go with DT. They're my favorite after all...

Despite the amount of hate mail Dream Theater seem to inspire round here at times they've released some great albums and I'm a big fan where as with Can I'm a more selective listener though they do have some great moments like Mother Sky. I haven't heard enough tracks like this from them to compete with DT though.

So despite i don't listen to DT anymore, if i voted, it would be for them, but i won't vote anyways

Can - it's a total no-brainer for me, although I'd be intrigued to hear DT cover Tago Mago or Ege Bamyesi.
UnCANnily enough, Pinch came up on my itunes shuffle (out of almost 12000 tracks) just as I typed that.

Can. Ege Bamyasi and Tago Mago are mind numbingly awesome. Still need to here Future days though. Powerful music. DT's stuff just doesnt pack a punch, for all its "heavey ness" and "metal ness". but they're the ones who got me into prog or at least the ones who lead me to this website 4 years ago so i guess i should be thankful.

easy....
one was a paragon of progressive rock music... pushing the boundries.. .letting it ALL. hang out... the other....smells like prog... tastes like prog.... yet is no more prog than Brittany Spears ... complex music yes... prog? hmmmm... prog in my book is more than complex music.
