This is a simple game where you complete a verse of a blues song that starts with:

"I woke up this morning..."

the idea was inspired by this Shed post by Syzygy

"Woke up this morning to see the Shed floating around the garden
I said I woke up this morning to see the Shed floating around the garden
My lawnmower and garden tools have suffered severe water damage
But for the foreseeable future I won't be doing no work...
In the garden"

'Lawnmower Flood Damage Lapsed Insurance Policy Blues', John Lee Hooker, from the album 'Met Office Severe Weather Warning Blues'

which reminded me of my favourite version from the 70s:

"I woke up this morning
I said, I woke up this morning
I woke up yesterday morning too
And if I wake up tomorrow morning
That'll be three days in a ro-o-o-ow"

...which I think is attributable to the Goodies (but it may have been Neil Innes or Eric Idle)

I woke up this morning, and the sun was sinking fast,
The moon rising slowly, and the light just wouldn't last
Yeah, my sleep schedule's so damn messed up babe
By tomorrow morning, tomorrow'll be the past

Or, a more... meish, less sarcastic try

I woke up this morning, and I heard the reaper call
He's done that every morning of every day, summer and fall
'Cos you left in the spring, babe
And without you the world just means nothing at all

I woke up this morning, and wondered why I try
Brown leaves floated from their trees
And bright sunlight flooded the sky
Well, I woke up this morning, babe
And I wish I hadn't
Woke up this morning, honey,
And wished so hard I hadn't made you cry

I woke up this morning, my hair was red
I woke up this morning, my hair was red
Don't bother me none, might be kinda fun
but I swear I was bald when I went to bed...

Hairdresser Blues

My hairdresser left me
she ain't coming back no more
My hairdresser left me
and she ain't coming back no more
But I can still hear her scissors
and her footsteps down the hall

Well my hair looks like a birdnest
now that she isn't here with me
My hair looks like a birdnest
now that she isn't here with me
Well I would cut it myself
if the backside I could see

If I don't get a haircut soon
I think I'm gonna die
If I don't get a haircut soon
I think I'm gonna die
My hair weighs on my shoulders
like a sword hanging from the sky

My hairdresser left me
but now she's coming home
My hairdresser left me
but now she's coming home
She called me last night
from the station's telephone

Now my hairdresser's back
and my hair's like a limousine
My hairdresser's back
my hair is neat like a limousine
She's got scissors in her hand
and her eyes are wide and mean

She cuts me with her scissors
and she cuts me with her eyes
She cuts me with scissors
and she cuts me with her eyes
Every word from her mouth
is a punch of her fist of ice

One morning I woke up
in an empty bed
One morning I woke up
in an empty bed
The call came that evening
my hairdresser she was dead

She had drowned in the river
in a gown of whitest lace
She had drowned in the river
in a gown of whitest lace
When they dragged her out
she had a smile upon her face

My hairdresser's left me
she ain't coming back no more
My hairdresser's left me
and she ain't coming back no more
But I can still hear her scissors
and her footsteps down the hall

I now realize that I should have started this with "I woke up this morning and my hairdresser etc..."

I woke up this morning, and I got myself a beer
I woke up this morning, and I got myself a beer
After that I threw up, feeling stupid as a moose
That was not the first line of The Doors' Roadhouse Blues

I woke up this morning, the sky was made of lead
I said I woke up this morning, and the sky, it was made of lead
I thought if someone doesn't put steel pillars under it or something
it ain't gonna take long until it's gonna fall on my sweet bed.

So I went to the hardware shop to buy some tools and stuff
went to the hardware shop to buy me some tools and stuff
showed the guy at the counter all my money
but the guy said it was not enough.

So I punched him in the face with my wallet full of coins
I said I punched him in the face with my wallet that was full of coins
when he was feeling his teeth
I kicked him in the groins.

But while I was kicking the man there was this other guy who called the cops
I was kicking the man when this other guy who also worked at the shop called the cops
they caught me red-handed and threw me in a cell
with nothing to eat but old newspapers and peanuts.

I woke up the next morning and the sky that was made of lead -
when I woke up the next morning the sky that was made of lead
fell on the jailhouse and
fell on my sweet iron bed.

I woke up this morning and thought the books I ordered would arrive today
I woke up this morning and thought my books would arrive today
but they didn't arrive so I thought they must arrive some other day.

But if they don't arrive soon I'm gonna wait and maybe they'll arrive later
if they don't arrive soon I guess I'll just have to wait for them to arrive later
but if they don't arrive at all I'm gonna have a hard time passing one of the courses I'm on and maybe I can't finish my studies in time and the money stops rolling in and I'll just have to call it quits and become a waiter (at a topless bar).
