...c'mon, you know that every prog band has had that moment where they either delved to far into pop or went way too excessive with a idea. And to most it sounded horrible but you know you like some of them...
I would have to pick "Arriving UFO" by Yes.
Every time I hear it I cannot get over how cheesy and awful it is (considering that the same band had done Awaken a year earlier), but I still listen to it on a regular basis and can't help but smile.

I don't have a guilty pleasure for prog, but non prog would be Meat Loaf. I absolutely love him.

No guilt pleasure in that! Bat Out Of Hell I and II are two of my favorite non-prog records!
Lesse... guily prog pleasures... I suppose In The Presence Of Enemies by Dream Theater because I know it word by word and everyone else in the world hates the lyrics for being cheesy

okay, well, I know every lyric on the album, how about that? It's
a fun one to drive with shouting it at the top of your lungs, that's
for sure.
yeah don't worry, I've never been phased by the haters (<- make

has anyone heard Shingetsu's self-titled album? it's full of sweet, simple, Camel-like prog-almost-rock songs but despite it being nowhere near my tastes I love every song on it. I just can't work out why ;P

Now this album I do like Pink Floyd - A Momentary Lapse of Reason (really like it)
Same - quite a bit actually Jethro Tull - Crest of a Knave, Catfish, "A"
Haven't heard Catfish, but I like the other 2! Gentle Giant - Civilian

Oh, I can't stand We Can't Dance. It's like Genesis going... country, or something. I was disappointed that they chose that for their encore last tour. I can understand putting it in the middle of the setlist just because people do like the song. But encore? It's like Rush choosing A Passage to Bangkok and YYZ as their encore songs. Maybe good songs, but definitely not good closers. Oh wait, they did. :/
Yay, tangents.

- I'd say YYZ is the ultimate closer! Besides, after that song I'm
usually on the verge of passing out from jumping and head banging so
I'm kind of glad they end the set on that one

I admit to liking That's All by Genesis very very much, though I still don't see it as a bad thing. It's a greal album anyway. If i shoudl say something, then The Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star. after all, these guys were in Yes for the Drama -album recording stuff like White Car etc.

A couple more guilty pleasures for me.
I like Marillion's "Dry Land" which is a blatant Hogarth era pop song, but epic nonetheless.
There's also an incredibly pop sounding Mike Oldfield album I used to have on tape. Can someone help me remember the name of it? It features people like Max Bacon on vocals. Very 80's AOR stuff. But there's a fantastic pop song with Adrian Belew on vocals. It doesn't really sound anything like him somehow. "Holy! To me just one glance is holy. . " As pop songs go this is a five star piece.

Robin Trower's title track "Bridge of Sighs" is very proggy IMHO (only one of his really) for its dreamy atmospherics. Traffic's "the Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" is still a massive pleasure . Talk Talk- Call in the Nightboy is fabulous driving music (especially the piano flourish). Tai Phong's Sister Jane (just for the slowdance memories). Supertramp's Fool's Overture (love that rolling bass). Spooky Tooth's classic the Mirror (wow what a mood). There will be more!

For prog, all 80's Genesis - I love it all except Whodunnit which I still cannot bear to listen to.
Non prog is a band called Tansads from Wigan, who were a punk/folk band in the same vein as Levellers. I was lucky enough to see them a couple of times and have all their LPs (they split up some 10 years ago). Genius, and by far the best band ever to hail from Wigan, certainly miles better than The Verve. Happy days

Kate Bush is in Prog-Related, and as far as I am concerned she could very well be placed in a fully prog category. As to the notion of 'guilty pleasures', it's something I don't buy into at all. I like what I like, and if someone doesn't agree with that, they can turn the other way (and this is an understatement, just to be polite).

For me, these 3 bands represent my idea of a "guilty pleasure" in that they don't readily come to me as prog, per se, but are in the prog camp for sure. They are, The Allan Parson's Project, Supertramp and Ambrosia. I unabashedly love these bands, but would shudder to share that fact at a KC convention or Opeth backstage get-together...
