MICK, I've watched the whole game and I almost had a heartattack...I'm a huge Rafa fan, but Federer has made such a return, I've just never seen anything like this final...I just sweated myself out at every point after the score went 2-1 at sets...congrats Rafa, congrats Federer!! what a final! Clap

the previous year, Rafa was even more brilliant against Roger (so this wasn't quite the most special final ever) but couldn't held his nerve till the end...so glad he finally did it...Roger played fantastic, never gave him the slightest of an oportunity till the end...but the way Rafa pulled it through...just made my day...Thumbs%20Up

(we should say more specifically that, at Wimbledon's gentleman's single final, Rafael Nadal overcame Roger Federer 6-4, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-7(8) - my god, what a tiebreak this was!!! my GOD!!!! - 9-7) Wink

I know... how about that point Raffa played to get to 7all in the fifth..  the defensive lob Roger threw up that actually landed in play that finished with the Raffa forehand winner.. wow.  Jumped out of the chair clapping on that one.  Big Raffa fan as well... but by the end of the match.. was rooting for both.  The quality of tennis..  wow.

At last, Federer was beaten at Wimbledon!

Rafa deserved that win.  Federer never looked quite as polished as he usually does.

tell me about it...that was the definite "heart-stop" moment for me...

otherwise, I just prayed for Rafa to finally break Roger's implacable service...it was his only chance, I knew the tie-breaks would go over to Roger...how late did he managed...how awesome...

ah, I will have a hell of a good dream tonight, after this game...

He wasn't himself till rain interrupted the match in the third set...that's why the final wasn't that incredible on both sides...Federer not being polished...Rafa not finding incredible shots, only suficiently powerful and offensive balls...

but after the rain, Fed returned like a championed...I truly believed he'll return and win again...

both deserved, hands down!

yep... one of those matches you are applauding both of the players...  you know Roger wasn't going to go quietly.  I guess round 3 comes up in NYC in a couple of months.  Would like to see Roger break Sampras's record though. He's been a great champion.  Might be tough now though.. Raffa is still a kid.. and still improving..

at the US Open, Rafa never made it past the quarterfinals...I'll rather except Djokovic to go hard  again, just like he did in January, over at the Aussies...

otherwise, sure, Roger gets the trophy...and closes in one shy from Sampras's 14 Slams

That was spectacular.  I'm a RF fan (I like the quiet, mannered athletes in an age of screaming bravados) but was thrilled for Rafa too.

Wimbledon rocks.

I haven't followed tennis for a long time, but I caught the end of this one and I agree with what everyone's saying.  That was incredible, it's like Johnny Mac said afterwards about Raffa winning, but nobody really lost...and a big score for the sport because the men's side has begun to pick up some much needed steam again.

I was almost in awe of the humility both guys showed afterwards, Rafa saying the Roger is still number one and the greatest of all time...those guys are pure class.

I've been a huge tennis fan my whole life, and I have to agree this was the most amazing match I've ever seen.

I'm a HUGE Roger Federer fan, so it was kinda a blow to me, but I absolutely loved every minute of the match nonetheless, and I know that Rafa got a much-deserved win.

Wonderful world-class playing from both of them. Clap

The next thing that will be interesting now is how Wimbledon tournaments will go in the future...

yeah.. been reading some comments on some other forums. Some yeahhos are saying Federer is washed up.. . pfffff...  he needs a couple things..

starting with

one .. a coach..

who'll tell him two things...

strengthen up... because he is simply being outmuscled out there.. and two... improve the backhand..  Rafa sending the heavy top-spin shots to Rogers backhand brought consistantly weak replies.  The guys on the tube were dead on... what separated them this day was the backhand..

for sh*ts and giggles.. read something somewhere...  the average  tour player's forehand give the ball a rotation  of roughly 2500 rpm... Rafa's.. is nearly 4500...  he hits such a heavy ball and knows where to attack Roger.

know there aren't many tennis fans here...  but what the hell....

clappies for Roger ClapClap..  not my favorite.. but as I posted earlier... really want to see him break Pete's record...  he is the best ever IMO...  he deserves the record to 'prove' it.   His 'worst' surface.. he is merely only the 2nd best in the world on... Pete couldn't say that about clay.

Amazing match today. I was glad to see that Roger was starting to head back to the Roger that everyone knows better. Hopefully this will be an indicator that he'll have a much better season than this slight slump he's had. Still, even his slumps make him #2 in the world... and not by much.

Federer all the way. Clap

Murray put up a good fight. Clap

Congrats to Roger, he really made an excellent tournament and he deserves, thus, his 13th Slam. His year wasn't as good as the previous, but that didn't meant, for me at least, that he didn't play quality tennis and kept somehow his "invincible" aura. The pre-US Open acts were a bit fluked, but at least he was one of the two tennis artists who gave us such a Wimbledon final, and here I really enjoyed seeing him play so good.

Congrats, Roger, congrats to Andy too, I start liking him as a player more and more! Let's hope for a sizzling last two months of this tennis season. Two more Masters, plus the Master Cup to go, after all...

Rafa constantly progressed this year, despite also losing. This semifinal exit - as well as that in Australian Open - were better results than last year. His only fluke was perhaps Rome, before Roland Garros, when he lost early as a defending champion. Otherwise: Queens, Wimbledon, Cincinatti Masters - high improvements. I'm sure Rafa will train to play the US Open final next year; this time, it was a bit too much for him, after too many consecutive successes.

If Murray had played as well as he had played against Nadal, the Final would have been very close. This looks like Murray's best surface. I would still say Federer is best on grass, but the level of his performances at Flushing Meadows were way above his Wimbledon performances.

Wow...when was the last time that neither the USA, neither Russia managed to reach the Davis Cup final?
Roddick and the gang met the Spanish Bulls on their clay ground, so they were pretty much doomed against Nadal, but Ferrer pulled an awesome 8-6 in the decider (coming back from 1-2 at sets) against Roddick. Meanwhile, Spain is to go to Argentina for the final, where young Juan Martin del Potro is rising fiercely (in fact, the only people to beat him these days could only be perhaps the top trio + Murray) and both matches with him will be a showdown.

I have never really watched much tennis but I guess since I live less than 2 miles from Wimbledon I might as well get into it. Also considering Andy Murray is mostly good I guess I can have some national pride.

You could send me money to buy you tickets. Interestingly enough my parents got free tickets because someone in my church had bought some but couldn't go for some odd reason so my parents got to go to Wimbledon for free!

Yeah, come think of it, the gas was over, in every way, after the first half of the fourth set: no more struggle with winning points, once broken (Rafa in the fourth, Roger in the fifth) the faith of the set was decided, and even the audience entertained a much colder atmosphere.

But until then, it was the long-awaited and highly-rewarding deathmatch of the tournament.

I saw the last 2 sets of Nadal-Verdasco and that was unbelievable.  How Nadal came back to beat Roger after that is truly super human.

I don't know how Fed keeps motivated anymore.  He's filthy rich and has won everything.  Chasing Sampras may not be enough for him to keep working to overcome Nadal

Just can't believe Roger couldn't outlast Rafa; the way Fed blazed through Roddick, has the extra rest, whereas Nadal had to have a 5 hour slugfest against Verdasco....I was sort of rooting for Fed in this one, but what can you say?  Rafa just has his number right now.  The rest of the season should be interesting.

Don't feel bad for Roger.  He's loaded and has his place in history as one of the greats.  Nadal is just a beast and Roger doesn't have the edge he had 4-5 years ago.  It ain't easy keeping up the mastery he has given us.
