I tried to stick with genre defining bands, don't get pissed if your favorite isn't there. Select as many as you want to talk/write about.

What bands do you like?

Are you interested in bands that have similar sounds, approaches?

Do you listen to bands that are similar, but never see them discussed in the forum or would like to tell people about them?

Maybe you can turn someone on to the music you like by referencing one of the above bands.

Don't be afraid to post links to websites or sound clips. Try to sell some records.

Don't trash bands because of ignorance.

There are so many great sounds to choose from. I'd have to say it depends based on mood. But my personal favorite out there is Rush, Lifeson gives great tones off of his guitar, and Geddy and Peart add a whole other element.

My 2nd Favorite is Godspeed You Black Emperor, then Yes, then Genesis, then Floyd, then Flower Kings and Pineapple Thief (Which aren't on here but that's okay).

But all of the groups on here have a unique sound that I like. But again, it depends on mood.

After all the hard work you put into trying to write an all-expansive list of bands, I bet someone's STILL going to pop and say, "Hey, where's [insert band here]?!"

Anyway, I picked Procol Harum. I love their sound and lyrics. They're extremely underrated, but  I love their work.

i like bands who sound like dream theater, but with dream theater the things that makes me love them so much is the different sounds they portray on their albums. E.g. in the instrumedly they are playing quite heavy metl then half way through the songs Jordan Rudess comes in with his little 1930's cartoon music (kinda cheesy) but it really flows

by the way.. anekdoten - nucleus is comparable with KC's red!!! really interesting album!

It can be said, in fact, that I COLLECT bands that sound like Mike Oldfield, who is one of those prog musicians that is a sub-genre in itself. More or less the same as Renaissance. I also like to purchase albums when I read they sound close to Camel in the melodic guitarwork (not the more cantebury side sound of the band).

So THREE that aren't in the poll... talk about unpopular tastes in an unpopular genre.

I miss the neo-prog sound.

Voted for, Pink Floyd, Gong, Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, Kansas.

Would like to add, Marillion, IQ, Pendragon, Arena, all different approaches towards neo-prog I think.

I'll listern to virtually anything prog upto the mid '70's

I have to say that I like various kinds of prog styles...

I really like King Crimson, not only Phase I, I also like all their other Phases...The double trio thing was something I really appreciate...
Radioactive Toy is right, Anekdoten is a great band sounding like King Crimson...especially "Nucleus" and "From Within"...if you don't know them you should check them out

The only thing within the prog genre I don't like is the so called neo prog (of course some exceptions). I can't stand omnipresent bombastic keyboard arrangements and exessively squeaking keyboard solos

But I really like the opposite, the easiness and fun KRAAN's music stands for...without all the prog clichés and the common sound orotundity...

I dont mind hearing the obvious 'influence' of any band, in another bands work, but I'd rather they didn't try to sound 'like' them.

All the comparisons made between Marillion and Genesis in the old days were a little unfair. They actually didn't sound anything like them, they were just the most prominant neo prog act at the time, and so attracted all the comparisons. The likes of Twelfth Night, Pallas and IQ were not 'important' enough for the media to go to the bother of making comparisons.

A year ago I would have probably said I only liked the sound of a few bands listed there probably Rush, Floyd and Amon Duul II but nowdays depending on my mood I love the sound of nearly all of those!

Ive even surprised myself and have even taken to enjoying VDGG, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Zappa and the non prog jazzy Weather Report.

I think though my main love with always be psychedelic/space/kraut rock and progressive metal

but yesterday managed to listen to Galahads album Year Zero and its brilliant! i can't understand why its only got 3 stars

I voted for RUSH, because their early material perfectly illustrates both extremes in my music collection... sublime prog rock, and crushing heavy metal.

Those are nearly impossible to find. What I was hoping to begin is some dicussion along the lines of, "If you like that, maybe you'll wanna check out......" Trying to get the discussion on bands we DON'T KNOW.

I included them because I said I like almost all styles

Ok, so if you like Pink Floyd you maybe want to check out The amber Light and RPWL, I really like their new album "The world through my eyes"...or a better known band, early Porcupine Tree, mainly "The sky moves sideways".
There seems to be a quite new band in the vein of Pink Floyd, I never heard a song but I read a lot about House of Not and their 2 albums long concept: http://www.justforkicks.de/detail.asp?sid=2370402M84N178N191N119&uid=0&id=3266&lid=1 - http://www.justforkicks.de/detail.asp?sid=2370402M84N178N191 N119&uid=0&id=3266&lid=1

If you like King Crimson, classical music and some RIO you have to check out Isildurs Bane (MIND Vol. I + II)
And if you liked the Gabriel/Bush collaboration you should check out MIND Vol. IV, if you don't mind awesome percussion work and some RIO influences in the background

red and bold are my favourite band sounds.

Special mention for Procol Harum especially the first 3 with Mathew Fisher. They have this big fat sound, the best of soul and blues with a classic touch. Unfortunately a lot of Prog Production is too thin.

So are there other modern bands that follow that style or ones that you would recommend to someone who likes Rush and Yes.

I can only agree to that. I definitely prefer bands that sound like themselves. As Ravel said to Gershwin when Gershwin wanted to take lessons from him: "Why do you want to become a 2nd class Ravel when you are already a 1st class Gershwin?"

I must admit, I like bands who carry a symphonic 'Yes' like sound into neo-prog... Iluvatar's 'Children' is an excellent example.

I like bands that sound similar to Marillion (Fish era).

On the softer melodic side (Misplaced Childhood sound) that would be bands like
Pendragon, IQ, Clepsydra, Collage, Moody Blues, Camel, Eloy

On the more complex side (Script, Fugazi) we find bands like.
Dream Theater (Yes DT, on occasion reminds me of Marillion), Arena, IQ, Twelfth Night, Genesis, Ayreon

I also like bands that sound like Yes's Relayer.
Excamples. Udu Wudu - Magma, Hawkwind's Warrior on the edge of time, the more heavy space rock albums in general.

Agree. Applause. Approve.

Be yourself, cause no one else can be like you. And we don't need bad copies. But hey, Friede said it better than I did. I really have nothing to add like that, except: I hate it when I hear bands that try to sound like another band. That's a real letdown for me. I love individuality.

I voted for bands that sound like DT, or rather that are WAY BETTER than DT. Like, Pain of Salvation, Andromeda, and Spastic Ink.
Then again, DT's latest is a hottie. Why do they start doing good music again after ten years??
