For me, and most people in the prog community, their last three albums have been major let downs. Can Dream Theater turn themselves around and write original compelling music like they did in the 90's?

I certainly hope so. But I liked Systematic Chaos ... except for Forsaken and Prophets of War.

It's been discussed to death already. All you're doing is creating another DT vs Anti-DT war here...
But we can do it... Yes, I think they still "have it".
And I don't need too put much reasoning into that... as your question refers to a purely subjective element, with my taste it should be enough. Other responses can be "no, I don't think they have it" and that would also be enough. That's what you asked anyway.
Now if you gave some reasoning behind your original remark and question, a better discussion could start.  -------------

I was not a fan of the lyrics on Systematic Chaos.
IMO, Dream Theater's CDs are always really close to hitting the mark....
I would like to see their lyrics return to their "glory days", more than their music. ------------- If it's worth playing, it's worth playing loud! |

Okay, can Dream Theater pull themselves together and acutally write original creative music. Systematic Chaos was mediocre, it sounded too robotic. Can Dream Theater make another Scenes From A Memory is what i'm asking. -------------

Some of us thought Systematic Chaos was just great. I loved it! My favorite by them since Awake. Maybe I just have a bad taste in music?

I liked there last three albums. If I am entertained then in my opinion they still have it. I actually used Systematic Chaos to introduce a few noobs who thought hair bands from the 80's was heavy metal. They loved it and were converted to Progressive Metal. So there!

Musically they're still very strong, though beginning to ge a little stale. In this department Systematic Chaos was their best since Scenes... IMO, but for some reason they're lyrics are getting worse. I would like Petrucci and Portnoy to find whatever it was that allowed them to write such powerful and thoughtful lyrics such as Voices and The Mirror. I'm not saying I want them to do the same as those early 90's albums, but lyrically Awake was definitely their peak.

No. Dream Theater have become metallica (not in sound). By the way, I think DT still has.... it? Well, there have been moments when I though they lost.... it? Namely, the first disc of 6DOIT, and some of the songs in TOT ("As I Am")... But in general, I think DT still has.... it? I loved SC and I also liked OCTAVARIUM a lot, even though a couple of songs were, I concede, derivative ("Panic Attack").... They're still the best prog-metal band in the world IMO, (well, IMO they're my favorite band period) ... Let's see what they give us whenever they decide to record their tenth release... and we'll know know if they still have.... it? -------------

Maybe, but I think that they need a BIG change. The main problem I've found with DT is that lately their influences has become too obvious. I don't know if this is some kind of tribute or something, but it bothers, and, maybe the root of all evil  is that they've tried so many styles (rock, prog, pop, metal, trash, heavy, psych) and in their career of being very eclectic they've fall into a holistic vicious, so, maybe they're lacking of ideas... Hope I'm wrong, sincerelyOn the other hand, the La Brie performance has been very criticized, and I'm agree with that, because the great singer of IaW and Awake has simply vanished (I've heard that he suffered a little accident during the Awake tour). Right now I'm listening Scarred, and I can't understand why his voice has changed so much, and it's not just the lack of force and presence in his voice, is the lack of inspiration and feeling, I don't know. However, I consider him a great singer, with excellent technique, and I hope he can redeem his last 3 not very good performances :-D I used to be a big fan of DT and prog metal, but lately I've found more interesting horizons in other styles (damn avantgarde and zeuhl  ), so, for me, a solution would be a drastic change, I don't know, a very experimental prog rock album, an instrumental album, a rock opera, a movie  , I don't know, somethig that divide the audience and redefines what DT is.------------- This is not my beautiful house... |

Dream Theater without a doubt still has it. I am the farthest away from thinking that their last 3 albums were let downs. My favorite album still is Images & Words but Octavarium had some amazing tracks on it, Train of Thought, while not their most proggy album still has great musicianship and songwriting, In the Name of God is one of my favorite DT songs, and a lot of fans too. Systematic Chaos is also amazing, I do admit I find the lyrics a bit ridiculous at times (D.E.N, Forsaken, The Ministry of Lost Souls), and just Prophets of War in general, but the music is still amazing, ITPOE is truly amazing, especially experiencing it live.
So if you haven't realized already, I don't think that DT lost anything, and still have so much more ahead of them. -------------

it is the sun that revolves around the chaotic world of PA's... if suddenly the sun failed to rise... that we never saw another DT v. Anti-DT thread or poll... PA's would be plunged into a nuclear winter of the 20th versions of favorite song/album/epic from the song old f**king groups hahahha. They definitely have it still...It's just that LaBrie's singing is getting worse by the day. For me, Systematic Chaos was quite good though...The Ministry Of Lost Souls is definitely one of my favorite DT songs. Frankly, I don't really care.
I still have great pleasure when I listen to IAW, Awake, ACOS, sometimes SDOIT and Falling, but I have lost my interest for their current activities.

If by "it" you mean virtuosic musicianship, impressive compositional technique, and rich creativity, then, barring any sudden neurological disorders, Dream Theater still have "it". As an aside, It amazes me that some who call themselves prog fans expect the art to come to them; this attitude is in complete opposition to participation is serious art, in particular, the listener (viewer, reader, etc.) needs to come to the art, i.e. understand the motivation, intention of the artist, and judge the work on whether the artist has, in fact, achieved her goals, not whether the critic "likes" it. Sorry, but the world of art is not Burger King: you can't have it your way. |

If dream theater always "had it," it would make sense to ask if they "still" had it. The only possible explanation for my questioning the use of "still" is because it implied that they ever had it. |
