Just curious. I started wearing mine in 1987 when the sister of a friend was thrown from a pickup truck during a roll over. The truck landed on her, killing her instantly, and if she had worn her seatbelt then she may have survived.

I starting wearing mine during my 'wild' college days when I loved to drag race.. one time I nearly hyrdoplaned off a bridge while foolishly losing badly to a crotch rocket ... I started wearing one.. two weeks later... I put my roomates Firebird into a tree at 85 mph (I thought the sign that said 15 mph curve was lying) Walked away.. well into an ambulance to have a 6 inch gash in my head sown up thanks to the windshield exploding on impact.
if you don't wear them.. wear them. The life you save.. will be your own.

All the time. Not only am I not a fan of dying I'm not a fan of tickets either.
I also plan on wearing ATGATT when I get my bike, but that's another issue all together.

Well the law just began within the last 1.5 years in MO. Most are not used to it still, such as myself, but I try.

I always wear a seat belt, even though in Italy lots of people don't (you see, here it's considered cool to flout the rules, even at the cost of your life...). Actually, I got used to it during my stays abroad, mainly in England, and then of course when I lived in Finland. Now it's second nature to me to always buckle up whenever I board a car (I don't drive myself).

I atarted wearing it in 1984 when I was returning home from a party with my best friend and our two girlfriends (who were sisters) when a drunk guy hitted the pílot door of my VW with an old Impala (luckily that night I was with antibiotics, so I didn't had a drink and could react).
I flew by the door and after me came my friend who was in the back seat behind the co-pilot who was my GF (Don't ask me how because I know it defies physics ). I lost conciousness for a couple of seconds and woke in the pavement just to see my car advancing towards us, I managed to pull my friend off the way of the car (he was drunk as a raising), before I lost conciousness again due to the pain in my right side.
I had 5 broken ribs, one of them almost touching my lung (luckily again, stoped less than one CM before the lung).
The doctor told me that if that broken rib would had gone one centimeter more, probably I would had died before reaching the hospital, so he just pull the rib to it's place (hurts a lot), gave some pain killers and that was all (Had top sleep seated for a week), my friend had a few scratches and our girlfriends were only scared.
That day I knew that the next time probably wouldn't be so lucky, so started to use the seatbelt even to go to the next block.
Now it's the law in Perú and a lot of people have problems, but I'm so used, that I feel naked when not using it.

Of course I do -- ever since they were put in cars.
Sorry, freedom of choice loving Americanos, but I think you have to be a total moron not to wear one -- ditto a helmet on a motorcycle.
And make that a full-face helmet -- I've got stories.

Don't know why anyone wouldn't wear one.
|

Yes. Having taken the quick way out through the windscreen during a collision with a tree in my youth (no - I wasn't driving and the car had no seatbelts) suffering a broken nose, concussion and multiple lacerations (I was lucky, actually), having to take my A levels 2 days later (nearly cost me my place at Cambridge) and feeling crap for some time, I even put it on if I move the car 5m down the drive.
Besides, it's the law in the UK and you get points on your licence and a fine. Why would anyone NOT wear one? Are they keen to win a Darwin Award?

Yep - I used to be a bit lax about it but my wife whipped me into shape. That it's the law and you'll get a stiff fine for not wearing one sort of makes this a no-brainer (aside from the obvious safety reasons).

Seems a no-brainer, but judging by the number of people I still see talking on a mobile whilst driving (and even pulling away from a parking space, how dumb is that?), there are probably some who don't.

different laws abound, but if I recall in this state you can't be pulled over for that reason alone - although if they pull you over for something else and you don't have it on, you get dinged.

That definitely used to be the case. At least here in Michigan, they have been running non-stop commercials on TV that the police are cracking down on people not wearing their seatbelts, and that they are pulling people over for not wearing them. As a matter of fact, when I was driving to work one day last week they actual had signs up that said that I was in a seatbelt enforcement zone.
I thought that these were national commercials too, since I generally see them during sporting events, but I'm not sure whether or not this is just Michigan that changed their law or if it is some sort of national change.

From the state of Michigan website:
Michigan's safety belt law allows police officers to stop a motorist solely for not wearing a safety belt in the front seat of a vehicle. The law also allows police officers to stop a motorist if a child age 4 through 15 is not properly restrained, no matter where they are riding in a vehicle. The law also requires all children under the age of 4 to be properly restrained in an approved child safety seat.

"Click it or ticket" anyone else have those warnings posted all over billboards on the highway? I wear mine
anyways, just because it's quick and easy so why not. But yeah, I don't feel like getting any kind of ticket or
being unfortunate enough to get into a crash while not wearing one.
But hey, my car is about as protective as a tin can so if I get in the crash I'm not sure how well I'll come out anyways.
Hooray for early 80s German-mobiles! But hey, it still runs!

I guess what spawned this thread was a story that I saw on the news where a man was pulled over specifically for not wearing a seat belt. He puts it on while getting his ticket, pulls away and a couple of minutes later is plowed into at an intersection and lived. He was being interviewed by the policeman and declared him to be his "guardian angel". My question was why anyone would not leave without their seatbelt on. For me, it's second nature.
Good to see the majority so in favor of it.

It's a federal road law here in Brazil since 1984 but I started using the belts even before, when it was only a rule in my state. I feel myself naked if not using them when inside a car.

Wouldn't you know here in Georgia you don't have to wear one in a pickup truck if you're an adult.
Some nonsense about not wanting to inconvience farmers out in rural areas has been used to justify it.
Another dumb Georgia law. No Sunday sales of alcohol except in bars and restaurants. The governer here (Skummy Perdue) likened allowing us to vote on that akin to allowing us to vote on prostitution. Ok fine, then can we have prostitution the other six days of the week?
The only good argument against seatbelt laws is how we gonna thin out dumb ones from the herd?

Racer's instinct says when you get in the car, you pull on the darn seatbelt until you can't move your torso. Yeah, that's a little over the top for just a street car, but when I do get a car I will probably put a 5 point harness in at some point, just beause it's second nature to me to be strapped in tightly.
Don't expect me to wear my helmet though, that's just ridiculous

I've always wondered how one gets pulled over for not wearing a seatbelt. There's no way that a policeman can see whether it's on or not at night, and if he just so happens to pull you over for any reason, put it on. It takes half a second. At daytime, the same applies except it might be a tad easier for the officer to distinguish whether yer wearing one or not, but only if traveling behind you and looking for it or stopped at an intersection and looking for it.

Ditto!
There are those who say it's their choice whether to put themselves in harms way (not wearing seat belts, not wearing crash helmets) & with those people I agree 100%. However, I also say that if you don't wear such protection, don't expect the ambulance service to assist in any way whatsoever, or for the health service to pay for your stupidity when you're scraped off the road somewhere.

I know what you're talking about, dude. I live in Atlanta, and all over the place is idiotic laws that are excessively enforced. The alcohol law you pointed out is one of those laws. Seriously, what's the point of not selling alcohol on Sundays? It doesn't make much sense to me. I liked what you said about prostitution. It looks like I'm not the only one with the same opinion...
I liked what you said about Sonny Perdue (Skummy Perdue). He's probably a nice guy, but he's a terrible governor. When your governor holds a prayer vigil during a really really bad statewide drought instead of actually figuring out how to make it better, then maybe that's a sign that he shouldn't be governor. I wondered why people even voted him in in the first place...

Of course, as a driver and a passenger. 'Clunk Click every trip' as the seatbelt campaign slogan used to go, in the 70's, in Britain.
It's law here, for all passengers and drivers to wear them. The only exceptions, I believe, are police officers and taxi drivers.
