I've found myself completely frustrated over the lack of selection for Progressive Rock CDs, especially the fact that there doesn't seem to be a section just for Progressive Rock.

So far I'm trying to find CDs by Glass Hammer and the Flower Kings, but have not found them to any avail. Where do you usually buy CDs?

In Mexico there's a store called "Mixed up", where actually you can buy certain records of progressive artists, lucky enough for us, there is a section of "old prog" that consists of cheap albums, you know, $9 u.s., also, there is the "serious" section where you can find a fair amount of records, but if you are looking for something really special, you ask for it, and they deliver that record within 2 weeks, so, if you're coming down to mexico, don´t forget to go to that store.

I now very rarely use record stores, except 'Moores' in Stevenage, where I live - this is a small independant store, which somehow keeps going, despite the fact that it commits the heinous crime of stocking little or no chart material.

Generally, I now use Amazon.com, 101CD.com or even E-Bay (quite a good resource for cheap CD's) - at least there, you are almost guaranteed to get the CD you want for a reasonable price - especially now as Amazon are providing a forum to sell 2nd hand CDs through them.

Still, doesn't compare with the old thrill of leafing through hundreds of vinyl albums at the record fairs of my youth, and finding the ultra rare Hendrix import for 50p in mint condition.

I dont really go to the stores much now. I tend to get mine from GFT which is a mail order only company. They have a massive catalogue of prog rock that they will send out to you with an order, or you can see the catalogue pages on their site.

There aren't any shops near me that stock much prog although they do have some of the more mainstream prog like Yes. I usually buy my CD's off the internet, through sites like Amazon.com.

I wish shops would sell more Prog but i guess it just isn't profitable at the moment.

Almost entirely mail order for prog.

There is exactly 1 (one), count 'em, 1 music store in town; a super-Mega-come-to-the-mall-with-your-life-savings-Sam-the-S ham-Goody store where you can buy all the music you want as long as it's Hip Hop, boy bands or vacuous little blonde chanteuses.

The only thing they are good for is picking up the hideously over-priced uncut releases of DRAGONBALL Z.

I buy my albums on eBay, most of them...some from Amazon...and sometimes I go to a big music-store in Frankfurt (World of Music)...they have some stuff but not really much, but I found Flower Kings, Gentle Giant, Yes and all the 'big' and 'famous' ones...

It's nearly impossible to find any PROG at music stores. Occassionaly, Borders Bookstore, Barnes and Noble or Tower Records will have a few. I found some Camel and Gentle Giants CD's in these stores, but for the most part it's Amazon and Ebay. I've also found that Progrock Records has reasonable prices, but they only has a few bands. Here's the link:

Salem Hill "Be" is a great album. Some bands have MP3's or samples.

We had a prog/metal store here in Montréal but it recently went under. If you're ever in Montreal check out Beatnick Records on Rue St.Denis. Tons of vinyl and collectors stuff even a section devoted specifically to Prog CD's and vinyl! The owner knows his stuff and is a former local musician. Contact him over the web if you have any specific requests. Go to http://www.beatnickmusic.com - www.beatnickmusic.com .

True - RUSH, YES, DREAM THEATER and PINK FLOYD albums (though by no means the complete catalog at any particular time) seems to be readily available anywhere.  And also, I always seem to be able to find JETHRO TULL'S "War Child".

I Don't know about DT, I have yet to find a copy of any of their CD's... anywhere!

The fact that there is only one good music store in our little redneck town (Zellers), which stocks almost no good cds is the main catalyst that tempts me to download music via the internet. Man I hate being in the middle of nowhere.

why not the guys that have a lot of records burn some of them an then mail it to those who aren't lucky enough to live near a record store????

I live in this obscure little town(Who's name isn't worth mentioning), about half an hour from a decent sized city(which is still too obscure to name, but if you have heard of Guelph, you are on the right road), which is about two hours northwest of Toronto.

And I'm all for sharing burned CD's, if it is the only way prog can spread

I've mentionned this before on another thread :

In Montreal we are quite lucky we have a little store that specilises in Prog and Prog / Metal . They have a great selection and if they don't have it they will order it for you. (they can order about any prog band you can think of unless its discontinued)

You can also order via their internet site . Its worth checking out :

The Prog/Metal store here in Montreal I thought went under didn't. It's called Freeson and they can get stuff from all around the world plus they have a lot of titles in stock in store their website is http://www.freesonrock.com - www.freesonrock.com . I've bought tons of stuff from them. I was int the store yesterday and bought Trace Birds right from the shelf so they always have a good selection of new and used prog CD's on hand.

I think I'm very lucky here. I live in a small town (compared to Amsterdam ). And there are 4 music shops. From one of them, I can order quite a few albums! For a reasonable price, mostly.

Leicester's Ultima Thule is very good - literally nextdoor to Leicester Railway Station in Conduit Street - but beware they open midday to 5pm only on Wednesdays to Saturdays (and can close up impromptually for their holidays!!). Also check out their webpage/web mail order services via Ultima Thule Audion.

Run by the brothers Freeman, who have a wealth of knowledge on progressive rock - they are acknowledged as being world experts on Krautrock and they are putting an update, CDROM version of their book "Cosmic Egg" together at the moment. Apart from a thorough knowledge of the UK prog scene , they are red hot on Italian and the French scene - and I enjoy the occasional friendly "debate" with Alan (who serves the shop), his knowledge is not absolutely perfect but who's is? Add to these RIO, electronica and avante, (they provide some service to the music school of Leicester University).

They turned me on to Anekdoten (my favourite neo prog  band of the 90's), Ibis, Collegium Musicum, Kraan and many other prog related bands I missed the first time around and certainly would not have found elsewhere in the UK. They are also slowly educating me in Krautrock. If you are a regular at their store, they get to know your tastes very well and are likely to sample you with albums you've not heard before - it is rare I don't buy several albums on each visit. And they have an excellent secondhand service in vinyl, cassettes and CD formats.

Fantom,

I don't know if you have A&B Sound in Eastern
Canada, but in Western Canada that is probably the
best retail store for finding progressive rock albums
for a low price. I bought most of my Genesis and Van
der Graaf Generator CDs, for example, for about $10
Canadian new. Ozric Tentacles? $13. I even got the
double Coma Divine CD (Porcupine Tree) for about
$23. None of these were sale prices. Nevertheless,
even A&Bs selection is limited. What I can't find there
(or at Zulu Records, a specialty store in Vancouver) I
order on-line. Amazon.ca usually, or the Freak
Emporium. The service at the Freak Emporium is
exceptional and they often have in stock things that
you can't find anywhere else. I ordered Porcupine
Tree's 'Recordings', 'Lightbulb Sun', and Gong's
'Angel's Egg' the other day and received my order in
less than a week and a half (from England!). The
prices are often surprisingly good -- too bad
customs always grabs 'em.

I know this is quite an old thread but wanted to spread the word about some great places to shop ... which I guess many of you know about anyway... ... but anyway ...

I would highly recommend Greg Walker @ Synphonic for good value, fast & friendly service - he has a huge range from all around the world and will do his best to give you the best postage deal (w/out jewel cases its half price)    http://synphonic.8m.com/ - http://synphonic.8m.com/

based in the UK, there's Will Mackie @ caerllysi music   - also very knowledgeable    http://www.caerllysimusic.co.uk/ - http://www.caerllysimusic.co.uk/    he always has  great deals going on ebay - username is  caerllysi . He is also  the main UK distributor for Glass Hammer.

btf in Italy are also good - although mainly euro prog stuff the are very reliable. They also own a great italian prog label (vinyl magic) http://www.btf.it/ - http://www.btf.it/

Where I'm located, it seems that a lot of rare things are around. I can go to one of the independent shops in Berkeley, California, and can get almost all the CD's I'm looking for (except for those damn elusive Fish-Era Marillion CD's).  I've even found a Flower Kings CD in my local Best Buy (which is pretty damn unbelievable). But I always find myself ordering more and more off the internet.

I've found that Circuit City and Best Buy stock lots of Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, Yes, and Frank Zappa. Barnes and Noble has some more obscure stuff. There's a store near me that mostly sells vinyl, but they do have a fair CD collection. Even if they don't have it in stock, I can have them order it and get it in about two days. They can even get rare imports, but those usually cost a bit more.

The likes of HMV and Virgin are sometimes decent stores for prog music, but usually their prices are inflated, so I stick to both Amazon.co.uk and a little store called Hector's House which isn't bad for finding some rare stuff, but there's a distinct lack of choice.

Our local HMV and MVC are stacked with Genesis, Yes & Floyd albums, but thats about it.

I went looking for the new Dream Theater album yesterday. MVC only had 'Images & Words' in the bargain bin, and HMV had run out. The guy behoind the counter said they had only been sent three copies to start with. They didn't have any other DT albums.

As for Rush, thats a laugh. In HMV you can by 'Spirit of Radio' compilation and 'Feedback'

I have never even bothered to look for anything slightly obscure. I buy virtually all CD's on line. I looked for Octavarium thinking 'its bound to be there!' how naieve..

Hi fandango!

Thanks for the advice. To be honest, I've never been let down by Amazon (Uk or .com) I've been able to get everything I've wanted there. Stores like HMV are only any good in big cities. In small towns like mine, its believed that everyone just listerns to chart sh!t. I guess its mostly true.

I'm still working through my Enid fixation and nothing else really stands a chance for a good few months when I ressurect an old flame  I guess next on SB hit list will be 'V' and 'Beware of the dark'

One day I'll write some more reviews. Honest...

Apparently if a shop sells two of the same CDs in a year then it is worth them stocking it. Our local shops are HMV and Virgin. HMV have better range of bands and albums though it is limited and I have pretty much reached end point. Now using the internet more and thanks to forum members have a good range of alternative sites. Only trouble is I like to hear before I buy and not all bands/publishers are as far sighted as MP3 contributors so far. As I keep saying  - 'Get your marketing guys onto it.' Now who wants my next order?

One of the best things about Jersey . It's the only store i kno that has an entire section comprised of only prog. Great Stuff.

You are so lucky, in Australia it is IMPOSSIBLE to find anything like Glass Hammer or even something like Symphony X, The CD stores here can say to have over 100,000 CD's but they will only have very famous prog bands like Yes, Rush etc. Prog is just not that popular over here, hell it took me ages to fing In the Court of King Crimson, all the albums I want I have to import from Germany which can take any where from 4 to 12 Weeks. 12 Weeks.

I was in Florida in October and went into a couple of record stores thinking I would be able to pick up CDs by bands like Glass Hammer and Echolyn. How stupid was I? (don't answer that). The only US prog CD I found was Transatlantic (if you can call them US) - there was no sign of anything else.

I've pretty much given up on British record shops for prog, I get them from Amazon or e-bay.

I do the vast majority of my CD buying at online stores like Amazon.com.

As far as Glass Hammer, go to their website http://glasshammer.com - http://glasshammer.com

The last time I checked they were selling their CDs for $15.00 - Amazon has the same CDs for $15.99.

Their new CD, The Inconsolable Secret, (Excellent CD, IMO), is available for $20.00 - its a double CD with over 100 minutes of music.

I havn't bought a CD in a store for several years now. I purchase everything from on line sources like amazonon.com, abstractlogix.com, ebay, or from indie labels (on line) like musea records, lasers edge, or directly from artists web sites.

Recently, I've been getting my stuff almost exclusively from http://www.lasercd.com - www.lasercd.com   aka Laser's Edge.  They've got tons of stuff, from really old obscure prog rock titles to the newest prog metal.  The owner, Ken Golden (also owner of Sensory Records) gives a short description and review for each title, and he's almost always right on.

Fast shipping, friendly service...hey, what a concept!

You're from Canada, eh? If you're in Toronto, I'd recommend the HMV on Yonge Street. I'm from the States, where prog is just starting to show up more in stores (probably thanks to Inside Out America), but when I was in Toronto, that HMV in particular had an impressive selection of stuff. I think I came over the border with about $250Cdn without getting checked. This was years ago before the border became such a pain after 9/11. The Canadian border patrol was very nice, but coming back I was very disappointed in the Americans. I mean I'm a bloody citizen for goodness sake!

In my area (State College, Pa.), Mike's Video, has been carrying more and more prog (I live in a college town, so this stuff even today, is still attracting college students). The people who work there often don't know what they have when they get it and I end up finding things like Pallas, Porcupine Tree, and Devil Doll (yes, Devil Doll!) in the metal section.

There's a really cool store just north of Ephrata, Pa. (in the middle of Pennsylvani Dutch country!) called Record Connection PA that has a prog/psych section. About twice a year I take a drive down there, but their prices are often higher than online sites, although occasionally I find a bargain or two. They do give a 10% discount on a $100+ purchase.

Other than that, there isn't much in Pa. I saw some prog in a store in Pittsburgh (I think on Carson St., can't remember the name), but very little and what was there was very overpriced.

For online, I like Laser's Edge a lot: http://www.lasercd.com/default.asp - http://www.lasercd.com/default.asp

Syn-Phonic in Utah has probably one of the largest selections, but they often don't have them in stock and recommend listing alternates, so I haven't bought anything from them in awhile, although they have reasonable prices, often better than other sites. See: http://synphonic.8m.com/ - http://synphonic.8m.com/

I've been meaning to check Kinesis out more. Never bought anything from them, but I like a lot of the stuff they have listed: http://www.kinesiscd.com/index.html - http://www.kinesiscd.com/index.html

Hope you have luck with some of the suggestions here.

my local Borders has a pretty good Genesis, Yes, Jethro Tull, and Dream Theater selections, almost all of Pink Floyds stuff and usually the latest release by Marillion, Pain of Salvation, Opeth and Spocks Beard and the occasional Rush cd. If I want much other than that I go online.
