I'm going to go WAY against the grain and say The ConstruKction Of Light.

Honestly, it's not the album I like so much, but the material from it performed live.  Historical importance be damned, that's the one I'm loving the most right now.

Top 5 right now:

1)  ConstruKction of Light
2)  Power To Believe
3)  Red
4)  ITCHYCOCK
5)  Happy With What You Have To Be Happy With

Edit:  Someone reply to http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=4846&PN=1 - my thread .

Three of a Perfect Pair! I like em all and its to hard to say one is better then another because there are too many stages in KC's celebrated career, so I had to go with the album that got me into them, I love tony's tone on sleepless

I go for the ProjeKcts. This is the Crimson I listen to most. Abstract, instrumental, captivating and gorgeous.

And honestly said, most of the studio material doesn't match the quality of the live recordings.

I don't understand why so many people chose Red as their favorite... I think Fallen Angel and One More Red Nightmare are the least imaginative songs of this line-up...

1. Lizard
2. Starless And Bible Black
3. In The Court
4. Lark's Tongues
5. Islands

I've gotta go with classic Crimson here. That's what I originally heard, and most likely therefore most biased to.

No order:

In The Court Of The Crimson King

Starless And Bible Black

Red

Lark's Tongues In Aspic

Lizard

Posted By: Kaztor
Date Posted: April 22 2005 at 18:07

From what I know (and have) now it's:

1. Larks' Tongues In Aspic

2. Starless And Bible Black

3. Red

4. In The Court Of The Crimson King

All of those are excellent btw but I still have to 'grow' a little more in the earliest department and I know nothing yet from the later albums.

It is obvious to me that the two best studio albums are "In the court of the crimson king" and "Red", those two hold the best music and a lot more archetypal analysis then any of the others.

Voted for 'Red', though it has got some short-comings as in bad editing (i.e. abrupt fade-out on 'One more red nightmare), nevertheless it contains one of the greatest compositions ever (Prog or not): STARLESS!!!

1- Red (I always wished David Cross had stayed in the band, however)

2- Starless (The first KC album I ever owned)

3- Larks Tongue (Can you tell my favorite KC line up?)

4- Discipline (This album changed my whole view of music and I made my band at the time change our pure prog-rock sound to a "prog-wave" sound.  Adrian Belew also plays in a band with friends of mine - The Bears.)

5- In the Court (It started it all!)

Well I like Islands (first album of KC I bought) and I prefer "Red" (which is perfect) to "In the Court of the Crimson King" (with "Moonchild", a "little bit" too long). I also really liked the way they re-invented themselves (and prog) in the 80's with "Discipline". So my top five :

1 Red

2 In the Court of The Crimson King

3 Islands

4 In the Wake of Poseidon

5 Discipline

Red is by far the one with less filler. Also, all the songs included are complete and fully crafted. It is more consistent. However, the feeling and emotions in it are somewhat impersonal. On the "appealing" issue, I´d vote for "In the court" or "Islands".

I have very mixed feelings about King Crimson. On one hand every time I hear tracks like The Court Of The Crimson King or Starless I got goose bumps because of the amazing Mellotron eruptions, fiery electric guitar, outstanding interplay and great skills from all musicians. But on the other hand the complex and experimental parts ('the organised chaos' or 'sympho-cacophony') are not my cup of tea, too nerveracking!

1) In The Court Of The Crimson King: beautiful balance between male (agressive guitar and saxophone) and female (soft Mellotron and flute) side

2) Red: dynamic and dark, very original, Starless is my favorite track, what a build up and climax

3) Discipline: 'return of the giant King Crimson', most innovative progrock from all symphonic dinosaurs after The Seventies

4) Cirkus: great live compilation 2-CD

5) USA: exciting Seventies live album capturing King Crimson at their creative peak

ITCOTCK is one of my top 5 all time favorite albums by anyone in any genre of music. Red is excellent also, but Im actually not a fan of the entire KC catalog. IMO they have put out alot of duds. After the early-mid  70s they seemed to wander aimlessly with too many lineup changes to mention with Fripp being the only constant. While the first few albums were very important in the development of "prog", as a whole I think they are overrated.

2- Island (Ladies of the road is just amazing)

3- Lizard

4- In the wake of poseidon

5- In the court of the Crimson King
