BRITISH PROGRESSIVE ROCK DYNAMOS PLOT BUSY SCHEDULE IN NEW YEAR
Porcupine Tree | http://www.jambase.com/Artists/Artist.aspx?artistID=13909 - Porcupine Tree will spend a busy 2008 releasing or recording no less than 8 albums by the band and its members' solo projects.
The first major event for Porcupine Tree is the re-release on April 29 of their seminal 2000 album, Lightbulb Sun (Snapper Music/ Peaceville), in a new 5.1 digital surround mix by Porcupine Tree bandleader Steven Wilson. Wilson received praise for his surround mix of 2007's Fear Of A Blank Planet. It nominated for a Grammy in the "Best Surround Sound Album" category, Sound & Vision named it the best surround sound album of 2007 and Classic Rock Magazine crowned it their album of the year.
Porcupine Tree drummer Gavin Harrison, named "best prog drummer" for the second consecutive year in the 2008 Modern Drummer reader's poll, will join http://www.jambase.com/Artists/Artist.aspx?artistID=8959 - King Crimson for 10 U.S tour dates in New York, Chicago, Nashville and Philadelphia this August, with additional dates to be added in 2009.
Other 2008 projects for Porcupine Tree include:
-A double live album to be released in multiple formats in September
-Filming a new concert DVD in October for 2009 release
-The first ever Porcupine Tree tour dates in Australia and Russia this summer
-Steven Wilson's debut solo album in late 2008
-The May release of Schoolyard Ghosts by Steven Wilson's band http://www.myspace.com/nomanuk - No-Man with singer Tim Bowness, and a No-Man European mini-tour
-The release of British rockers http://www.myspace.com/weareanathema - Anathema 's new album, produced by Steven Wilson
-The release of Porcupine Tree keyboardist Richard Barbieri's new solo album
-The release of Porcupine Tree bassist Colin Edwin's new album with Geoff Leigh as the band http://www.myspace.com/exwiseheads - Ex-Wise Head |
The live album and DVD is particularly exciting to me. I heard somewhere that SW's upcoming solo debut is supposed to be incredibly diverse, covering all of his influences. If this is the case it should be really interesting. I know some of this is old news, but for those who haven't heard it all here it is.

Sweet. Damn, if this isn't the best active band in the world right now, I don't know who is. The Pink Floyd of the New Millineum (I know they don't like those comparisons). If the music business was like it was circa 1975 or so, including FM radio, this band would easily be the biggest selling, most well known band of this era. Radiohead my arse.
Also can't wait for the live album and DVD, I hope they don't go crazy with the cutaways and the mixture of color and black and white on the live DVD though. Just give us a straight "You are there" view of the gig. No need to be artsy. Let the video footage do that.
You got to love how prolific Wilson is..........

Everybody here should check out some of the previews for the new No-Man album. It looks like it'll be a great one, if not one of Steve's best. Also his solo album should be great.

I will be at ALL NYC Crimson shows in the orchestra section woot!...but look forward to all the releases sans Barbieri's and Edwin's work...as they don't really do much for me.

I will be at one of the NYC KC shows hopefully (if I convince my dad). I am extremely excited for the new PT concert dvd and cd....one question I have though is if they are going to be doing the same sort of thing Opeth did with the Roundhouse Tapes...recording and filming the same gig..releasing the recording first and the dvd at a much later date..but I'm not sure if it's the same show being recorded...does anyone know about that?

I have listened to a lot of Radiohead, and I am going to see them in a few months. Simply put, PT blows their doors off. I want Radiohead live to really impress me, so I am keeping an open mind, but they will be hard put to top live Porcupine Tree. Radiohead for some reason became a media darling, while PT gets little ink and lives in relative obscurity. Based on talent alone, there is no reason for this dichotomy. For one thing, Wilson has a much better voice than Thom Yorke. That in itself puts Radiohead behind big time. I have to like the lead voice or its a tough listen. Second, PT has a much more melodic sense, with more varied influences. Wilson can go from pop to metal without blinking. Radiohead is not as versatile IMO.
I don't deny Radiohead some props and influence. Heck, Wilson is a fan of Radiohead, and so they have influenced PT. My comment was a statement at the over the top "anointing" of Radiohead as THE cerebral band, THE new Pink Floyd etc, when based purely on musical terms, PT shreds Radiohead to ribbons and is much more deserving of the "new Pink Floyd" label if that has to be used as a demarcation line.

I too am a little surprised he's doing a solo album, given that he writes most if not all the PT tunes, has the side project No Man, AND does Blackfield, which I thought was his outlet for the more pop oriented side. Sometimes when artists get too spread out like that, the main band suffers. I hope he doesn't spread it too thin.....

eh, I sort of understand wanting to have another outlet for different styles of music, perhaps he just ran out of clever names to put it out under

All those who pre-ordered it should have it by now. Sounds wonderful.
Commercially, I don't think it is available until some time in May.
Be patient.

Thanks, rushaholic. I have been patient since I bought In Abstentia. I bought it on a whim in 2002 from seeing reviews on Amazon. I wasn't into my prog rebirth yet. I loved it and thought I should look at their back catalog. LS and SD were the natural choices. But they weren't available. Out of print. Six freaking years later I have one but not the other. Can he draw it out a little longer?

You should be able to get Lightbulb Sun from Burning Shed but it will be a considerably more expensive than waiting for Amazon etc to get it.
To be honest though you should have preordered since the first 3000 orders at Burning Shed came with a free bonus CD which has Novak and an instrumental version of Buying New Soul on it.

Just saw it will be available on Amazon in the US on May 27. I don't use them much anymore so I wasn't looking at them. Oh, well. What's another month.

I just bought the re-issue of LS today at my local record shop. I've only waited three years for it so not nearly as long as you, Johnobvious, but the wait felt long enough!
The sound on this CD is great as could be expected, of course. Over the years I've heard nearly all of the songs on it on live recordings and over at YouTube but there were four tracks I heard for the first time today. Feel So Low was one of them and I already frigging love that track, a true PT gem...

Thanks, Fritha. Glad to know it does indeed exist. Just like the new Magenta, looks like the states has to wait quite a bit longer than Europe to get it. But I got the new Magenta yesterday so I'm pretty darn happy anyway.![Big%20smile](smileys/smiley4.gif)
