On a recent amble round the omnipresent satan of supermarket chains (ASDA for those not in the know) I found myself in deep philosophical thought, something about the application of Marxism in a post-WW2 age..I was struck by something more serious upon approaching the bakery..... What was the best thing before sliced bread?

To really have answer this question in a serious way I'd need to know the actual date sliced bread was first available...
