It was called "Rock Aid Armenia" and it was a benefit organized at first by John Paul Jones (former Zep bass player). All this was around 1990.
The concept was that he would gather players from all the legendary rock bands to do one classic track at a time. However Jones soon left and I believe they never got past "Smoke on the Water".
The weird thing here is that Gillan had just left Purple and yet you can see him and Blackmore together again!!!
Another piece of trivia-from-way-back-when: It was supposedly at this event that Gillan adviced Dickinson to follow his muse and do a solo album (which became "Tattoed Millonaire").
Those were the days...
 PS: There's also Brian May, Tony Iommi, Paul Rodgers, Keith Emerson, Brian Adams, etc. in there.

Thanks for that update Julio, itīs actually the first time Iīve heard about them all getting together.
Wonder what the hell Bryan Adams is doing there, seems to stand out like a sore thumb
Anyway, this video clip should leave everyone with no doubts that Purple are indeed Prog Related

^ prog-related my ass... Hard.. errr.. heavy prog. We all know it... we just whistle pass the graveyard on that placement here. Just saw they are under Proto Prog, what I really meant to say is that they are in one way or another related to Prog
.Still the greatest Hard Rock, Heavy Prog, Proto Prog band to come out of England IMHO

considering 4 of their 5 genre defining albums were in '69 and after... proto has always seemed an excuse in placement. Then again.. heavy prog didn't exist when they were added.. however .. try gettting them moved.
