Over the past few months or so, in endevours requiring a microphone, I've been mostly hobbling along with whatever awful recording equipment I have lying around. We're talking defaults here. The background noise and quality drops I've been noticing recently have driven me to pursue a new, professional microphone. I'd mostly be recording guitar and vocals with it, maybe some woodwinds as well. Price doesn't really make a difference, but if I could save money that'd be great. I was considering a Shure SM-57 or 58, are those any good? Also, would I need an audio interface for any of these?

I'm a complete newbie at the subject; can you guys help me out?

I don't know much about it, but a couple of friends (singers) use those "Shure" mic and seem pretty happy. Of course, musicians of this forum can provide better help.

The SM 58 is usually the mic everyone has... it's not bad, but personally I love mine: Sennheiser Evolution E865 Sting, because I have a very high toned voice, and this one is just perfect for it!

And because I love a good voice with some reverb and delay, I'm also the proud owner of a Digitech VX 400 Pedal board...

SM-58's are unbeatable for the price - at least, it's what I use, and I'm very, very happy with it.

The important thing is not to stop questioning.
