I'm not ready for reading, but I read they'r much older lol. Seems cool, but really can't see how can it be comedy with a punk rocker, still this is just a first sight opinion, so we'll see.

It's British, and thus somewhat satyrical. Also very good.
My personal favourites are Black Books and Blackadder (especially Goes Forth), and I'm quite enjoying The IT Crowd.

As far as US commercial television goes I agree that it is the funniest show ever. There have been series' on HBO, Showtime, etc. that were hilarious but they didn't have the FCC restrictions that Seinfeld had to cope with. The show will still make us laugh 50 years on.

Yes, I believe it is the greatest comedy show ever, Monty Python included. It's situational comedy, though, so I dunno if I can vote based on its jokes.

I would say that Seinfeld is the best TV show of all time. I mean, look at sitcoms pre- and post-Seinfeld. Before it, you'd get genuinely funny stuff (All in the Family, I Love Lucy), but they would always be hampered by nauseatingly cheesy life lessons that had little or nothing to do with the episode until the very end (see: Cosby Show). Hell, even Married With Children had its share of lessons that felt out of place. Seinfeld broke that with the mantra "No hugging; no learning." From Seinfled we got shows like The Office (the UK version which is a lot blacker, though the final special did have a lot of heart), Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and a number of Showtime and HBO comedies. By not breaking the humor to teach some hackneyed lesson, it could be as dark and satirical or as slapsticky as it wanted.

They're good, but early Frasier beats it...![Big%20smile](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif)

ok, Frasier was good, but I got confused from time to time as to whether is was up its own ass, or whether it was making fun of people who were up their own asses. It is certainly more dense than Seinfeld, and it takes itself much more seriously.
You just have to look at the last episode of Seinfeld and see how norm-shattering it was.

Seinfeld was and still is an incredible show. I would say it is the best, if not one of the best (easily top 3!). I actually think I prefer Curb Your Enthusiasm due to Larry David's complete lack of....whatever for society. That is another great show.

I agree completely. Seinfeld is top 10 material, but the all time greatest is Monty Python's Flying Circus. No question about it.

I don't even think the two (MP and Seinfeld) belong in the same category. Can you even call MP a sitcom??? You could say it's better than SNL, Mad TV, so forth......

If we're talking about Seinfeld, the guy, I have to admit I always found him an average comedian, funny at times, hardly hillarious. The show is different, but I suspect it's moslty because of Larry David than Seinfeld himself.
Comparing Seinfeld with british humour is a bit unfair. You average BBC/Channel 4 sitcom easily beats it. As far as US go, The Simpsons and the abovementioned Frasier are a bit more clever and funny.

The Office and Blackadder are better in my opinion, although Seinfeld has some classic episodes.

I prefer the Office and Blackadder myself (those are terrific). I do tend to prefer Britcoms. The shows I've recently got into are Extras and Saxondale (the latter a must watch for proggers)..

If I ever hear the parrot sketch again, and I know I will, I'll bleedin' crucify myself. The show has been so influential... But it dated, it got old. I think it's one of those shows that you really had to be there when it was going on. I saw it as a kid quite a few years after it had ended and loved it, but now it all seems a bit silly (well, not all of it).. It could be very clever. I mush prefer the Python movies, particularly The Meaning of Life -- love it. And the albums are fun -- still love those.
I still think there's great Python material, and they were clever and innovative (really pushed the envelope of bad taste -- shock value). Just think of all Python quotes that have become popular. It's become such a part of popular culture. No, I don't think it's overrated due to its influence and historic value. If you'd been an aspiring young comedy writer in england at the time, Stonebeard, your thoughts would likely be very different. Now Friends, that was overrated, in my opinion (though I rather dislike that overrated term). And don't get me started on Blossom, Joey and Saved by the Bell.

I took the first option, since it didn't necessarily say that Seinfield was the greatest comedy . . . even though that was your initial question.
I wouldn't say anything else beats it per se, but it just depends on what mood I'm in. If I want intelligent humor, I'll watch Frasier. If I want slapstick comedy, I'll watch Fawlty Towers, and if I want to laugh out loud at cartoons, Family Guy will do me just fine.
Seinfield is the show I watch when random humor is what I crave. And it does random jokes oh so very, very well. ![Clap](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley32.gif)

Very funny, but Blackadder and South Park? they own all comedy series ever in my opinion. I still chickle at the rhetoric, despite having seen every episode about 10 times!

Seinfeld was great but I don't think it's the best. Get Smart, Bob Newheart Show and The Odd Couple come to mind. Come to think of it, The Odd Couple was great but had a few clunker shows. Someone mentioned the final Seinfeld. I think the golden standard of last shows was Newheart. I also prefer to watch Trailer Park Boys but many won't and that's a whole other thread. There's the UK shows like Coupling, The Office and Bottom. There's a great Australian comedy called Kath and Kim that deserves mentioning.
I think it's a mistake comparing American and British sitcoms. There's a difference in cultures and a difference in broadcasting standards. AbFab had an episode where Edina was driving drunk. You couldn't do that in a comedy on US television unless they wanted to add a heavily dramatic episode with a message. Speaking of culture difference, there are a couple of Canadian comedies that were great but so Canadian that few others wouldn't really get a lot of the jokes.
Anyway, back to Seinfeld. It was inventive and funny but I got tired of the reruns quickly, more quickly than reruns of other sitcoms of that time.
