There were various permutations on these, but which of these selections do you consider the best?

Wetton era. Their best material, most varied and best sound came from that era.

Oh God no! You can't make me choose!
I'm hoping that the Fripp/Belew/Levin/Mastelotto/Harrison will be my favorite, but for now, I'm debating between #4 and #5.

I only like ITCOTCK and part of Red, so my option is with the first KING CRIMSON lineup or second from this list, being that Giles, Giles & Fripp is another different thing.

Ditto! I think Muir's presence really added something special to the band's sound.
The ITCOTCK lineup was also great... I have always been curious as to know what they would have done, had they stayed together.

for me.. the classic line up.
Fripp, Lake, McDonald, Giles, Sinfield.
would have loved to seen where they would have gone. I enjoy moments of later phases of the group. But this line-up I thought was the most interesting.. quite possibly the most creative.

A vote for the Muir line-up. Can't stand Greg Lake and I try to ignore lyrics, so there's nothing appealing to me in the first one and a half albums except for in Mars.

All of the lineups are good in various ways. The Larks-Red era is probably the best overall, but I have gained much respect for the 80's-present era. If you havent seen Neal Jack and Me DVD it will change your mind. Just great musicians playing great music.

I agree, except I think the 80s-present is the best, haha. That DVD will blow your mind; this is just a second voice telling you, if you're reading this and don't have that DVD, it's well worth it.

Funny how what many find the best KC line-ups (with Wetton and with-or-without Muir) are the ones including one of the musicians with the most uneven post-KC career (Wetton, that is).
Kind regards.

I can't choose.
Mike Giles and Ian McDonald helped make the first KC special. Some of the musical textures and ensemble sounds on ITCOTCK where amazing, even by today's standards. Just beautiful.
Let's not forget the Lizard lineup - or mini orchestra. I can't imagine anyone else producing the marvels of Bolero.
Jamie Muir's experimentalism added an other-worldly quality to KC that was unique. The creativity on LTIA was hard to match. The expanded lineup on Starless (the song) was a treat too. Imagine seeing that group of musicians play it live!
For sheer brilliance, you can't go the 80s group. More compact and spacious than the double trio.
Interestingly, it was the first album of each lineup that saw them at their creative powers. Maybe Bob Fripp should just start new bands, produce an album, then disband? Then he could wait a couple of years and start another band, bristling with creative fire!
Still, the bedded-down bands did manage to produce marvellous gems like Cat Food, Bolero, Starless, TOAPP and Coda.

A poll is only redudant if the same people are voting again. If you have new people involved then it's a completely different poll. So if you want to attract new people to PA then this question really needs to stop being asked.

I voted Fripp-Wetton-Cross-Bruford. That lineup developed beautifully into a very tight unit that could done some amazing improv.

I choose J.Wetton, Robert Fripp, Bill Bruford, Davis Cross, Ian Mcdonald and Mel Collins;
That's the fantastic line-up playing on STARLESS......33 years later i have never recovered my sanity after reading FRIPP disbanded KC when IAN McDONALD was about to return full time to the band he created a few years earlier.....Still dreaming of the possibilities!!

Can't go past the Fripp, Lake, McDonald, Giles, Sinfield line up when it comes to music quality.
Lake better voice than Wetton. Win for the Lake era
The Wetton era doesn't even have any keyboards. Another win for Lake era
Song writing is stronger during Lake era. Another win for Lake era
I prefer Giles drumming over Brufords 1973-1974 drumming. Another win for Lake era
Poseidon is my fave KC album. Another win for Lake era
Only problem was Lake era only lasted 2 albums and Wetton era lasted 3 albums.
The Belew 80s era probably has the most amount of quality possibly over 3 albums though.

The Muir period - his percussive insanity seems so right for KC (listen to Easy Money on Lark's Tongue), and clearly rubbed off on Wm Bruford.
I have to say the more I hear the King Crimson Collectors Club live issues, the more respect I give the Boz Burrell, Mel Collins, Ian Wallace period (check out the Denver set)

My favorite lineup has to be the original KC lineup (not the Giles Giles & Fripp). They made In the Court of the Crimson King! The early 80's lineup that included Belew, Fripp, Bruford and Levin is my second favorite. Adrian Belew's David Byrne-like vocals are always entertaining, and Tony Levin's Chapman Stick was (and still is) very entertaining.
-------------
Would you like some Bailey's?

Fripp, Giles, McDonald, Lake, Sinfield
Although I have to agree with Spookytooth that the Belew, Levin, Fripp, Bruford lineup is great too.

After,
Fripp, Belew, Levin, Bruford

Michael Giles drumming is the best in prog and Greg Lake's vocals are much better than John Wetton's so the early era gets my vote.
