First suggestion: Bring back the Latest Posts zone.

Is there anway we cn bring back the old look? Or at least make our sigs bigger?

-------------

/\ Yeah, a bigger box for signatures would be a fine idea. A lot of people's last.fm sigs will be cut short in this format.

These two suggestions (bigger sigs and recent posts) are the only two that came to my mind. Other than that it's great. Thumbs%20Up

The last post feature is working for me now.  The first couple of times I tried it I got Explorer errors.

It is definitely not as user-friendly as the previous forum with the latest posts at the bottom.  When you clicked on the latest post before it would take you directly to the latest post.  Currently it appears to take you to the first post in the thread and then you have to scroll to get to the last post.  Also, it is obviously more difficult to follow the latest posts by having to look at each of the topics to see when the latest post was made.  This feature was available under the previous method, so this change is definitely not an improvement to the site.

M@x,

FYI, it seems that the 'new post' icons in the Active Topics view do not work with Opera unless you are logged in.  In IE7 they seem to work whether you are logged in or not.  Not sure this is a big deal, but it is a bit odd.

I cannot find an "Edit Post" button, Maxim...

I have got the forum working in Firefox now, after cleaning the cache and cookies.  I also want to see the "Active Posts" return, I use that feature all the time.

Oh, it's under "Post Options"... Confused

Don't know if already mentioned, but accessing a topic by its latest post (that is, pressing the button most right to a topic) directs to a bug/problem page. So a topic can't be accessed that way.

Can it be fixed, just like it was in the old format?

An error has occurred while executing SQL query on database.
Please contact the forum administrator.

Support Error Code:- err_SQLServer_get_search_results_data
File Name:- search_process.asp

Error details:-

It will take folks a while to get used to the upgrade, but it looks like a postive improvement.

As mailto:M@x - M@x says, it also reduces the risk of hacking, which must be a good thing.

I have no problems in using the forum the way I'm used to now - i.e. mainly browse from Active Topics, do an occasional search and so on. One thing would be great though, and that is adding a bit more contrast in the color settings. An example: I have to look quite hard to see that there's a lock in the bottom right of a thread icon - mainly due to the use of pale colours and maybe also the very white back ground Tony (glass_house) referred to.

Apart from that - no objections, only improvements.

EDIT: Oh and M@X, thanks for re-enabling full message search, do we get to keep it?

A couple of little comments:

It appears the link to read a member's reviews is gone from the profile page... Question
As for the drop-down list when clicking on "post options" or a member's name in a thread, it's always useful to be able to right-click those links and "open in a new tab." I use that function for sites all the time so that I don't have to keep clicking the "go back one page" button in my browser.

In any case, good work, M@X! I really like some of these new features Thumbs%20Up

post font size needs to be reduced. Or change font from Verdana back to Arial, which results in a smaller appearance at same size setting.

Ok, just found it now in the forum hopme page... when you click in a most recent post in a forum you are directed to the first page of the topic not the current active page.

I believe it's something easy to be fixed.

Hit active topics in the upper right corner....  can find the topics that have been recently posted in... not as 'clean' as the ten recent ones... but works better for that... not as hard to lose topics when trolls, hyenas, and RIO freaks descend upon threads and clog the '10 recent'

as far as I can tell, a member's reviews page is only accessible from the All Reviews area, but it should be included on the Member Profile as before

still terribly missing the lack of a Latest Post overview at the bottom

as sorry, I though you guys mean the latest 10 posts (especially since you bragged, again, about the VR)
yes, the Active Topics is working, I just wish it to be present regardless of what page I'm at, as usual.

GAAAAAAHHH, UGLY! The colors are bland, the thread icons are too large and make the page big and clunky, it goes on and on.

I've noticed that too. It makes threads harder to find without it even though it means no VR/STC hogging up the frontpage.

exactly... we used to have have the ability to search a member by their posts.. that was removed for performance reasons... and could only search a member by the threads they started.  Now if I wanted to see what Rico had to say thorughout the forum during the day... it is a quick search.  I enjoyed that feature before it was removed some time back.

I've got a number of gripes that I may/may not get used to. I agree with glass_house and Angelo about the colour contrast, colours a too pale by far and the wight is very bright, not particularly pleasent. Also, because of the pale colours, I find it difficult ot see which threads are pinned/locked/have a recent post in them, which is very annoying. Lastly, everytime I come to the forum I have to manually log in now, rather than find myself automatically logged in, it only costs me a second or two but its still a bit annoying.

I would like the admins to crack down on the giant f**king image sigs. It's not nice for people on 56k (I'm not, but some are, and it would absolutely rape them), and there's really no need for us to see a huge picture of some band or musician or something that you like after every one of your posts. Hell, even most Last.fm sigs are too large, don't they have smaller designs? They should at least, some of this is just getting obnoxious.

Yes, you could. Post a sticky that says "No sigs can be larger than 400x80", give people some time to comply, and if they don't force edit their sigs or ban them or something (you can do that, right?).

Since when has listening to the majority helped? ;-) Rico's sig takes up three quarters of my freaking page, and I'm on 1200x800 resolution! micky's and some others are almost as bad! Besides that it's obnoxiously raping my scroll button, imagine what it's doing to people on 56k! 56k averages 7kb/s, which means that it would take him 4.7 seconds to load just Rico's sig once. If micky, Rico, and Geck0 each posted on the same page twice, then that's a total of 22 seconds of completely superflous loading time just for their images. I'm not even counting their Last.fm sigs because I didn't bother to do the math. That really adds up if you're trying to browse multiple pages. I don't mean to single them out, they're just big ones that caught my eye. There are other people with larger file size sigs than that because they're animated gifs.

I don't know if there are any people who are actually on 56k, but maybe someone came and was discouraged? It's always good to be considerate. And even if nobody with 56k ever comes here, it's still considerate to my scroll button and ease of reading.

I guess that is just the difference in people...

after I destroyed my high speed modem against the wall last year.. I suffered through dial-up, too ashamed  to tell the cable company that the modem they gave me was in pieces and ask for a replacement LOL...

I know exactly of what you speak there G2... the difference is... some accept it... wouldn't think of asking others to change their profiles or their manner of posting... on their account.  If the site and the way it is bothers me... I don't visit it.. simple as that. For me, I waited ... if but impatiently at times hahhaha... for the pages to load.

There's a difference between asking someone to change who they are online, and asking someone to be considerate to everyone around them. Except if who they are is being inconsiderate to everyone, then they should change, or be forcibly ejected. Moderators claim they can enforce courtesy rules in posting for the better good of everyone, I don't see why stupid signatures that are 10 times longer than your post (and sometimes are mostly white space!) should be any different. If I wanted to see a picture of that guy or a cat, I would Google it!

To be honest, "If you don't like it just leave" is a really weak defense, especially for something like this. I like this site, it's one of the better ones around, but I think there are ways that it could be better. I can deal with it, it's not that much more annoying than the constant graphic emoticons that are thrown about (I loved people's reactions to my old sig about that. Clearly, these things are important enough to bring out the best in people). But that doesn't make it right or good.

I repeat, it's not an issue for the Admin team. There is nothing in the rules banning large signatures, and the rules would not be the place to enforce any policy which did restrict them. that is far better done through technical restrictions. mailto:M@x - M@x is the site owner and the webmaster. It is up to him what graphics he chooses to allow on the site.

The Admin team are happy to take issues to him where there is a ground-swell of opinion about an issue.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I do not perceive that a lot of people feel that size of the signatures are a major issue.

Maybe this also doesn't belong here, but I noticed it in on Progressive Ears forum last week: would it be possible (without much development work) to add 'partial quoting' to the forums? What PE has is a mechanism that allows you to select a part of someone else's post using your mouse - then click 'Quote' and only the selected piece gets quoted. Very useful in long discussions!

Iván occasionally uses 56k dialup.

As for signature images, mine isn't that big, I've seen much bigger ones, so why you singled me out specifically, I have no idea...

I have too, and I didn't meant to be mean to you, those names were just ones I got from looking through a few threads randomly for large sigs (except for Rico's new one, which has annoyed me from the beginning), and it was actually your large Last.fm sig plus the picture that made it very noticable. I only wanted specific examples so it wasn't like those typical "some people" things that people do, which then makes no-one accountable, but I am by no means saying that those people are the only people or even the most egregious offendors (just now I have seen 3 people who are worse than who I mentioned). For loading, it's actually probably the animated gifs that are really killer, but at least they aren't such a pain to scroll past.

There is no reason that your sig should exceed 200 pixels high, much less the 400-ish (and sometimes more!)monstrosities. Seriously, it's not that hard to resize images. Hell, I'll do it for you if you don't know how.

I don't see why it's a tech more than an admin issue, except that you wouldn't want to bother PMing people to tell them to change their sigs. I understand that. But it is the admins who make the rules and who enforce them. Max of course has the final say, but that doesn't mean he has to expressly tell you to start every rule.

happening before the forum upgrade.  I get the same problem when trying to add hyperlinks to PMs.

Also, word wrap doesn't seem to work in the new forum when using Opera.

A quick solution to that is to quote someone normally and before you post, just manually delete the parts you don't wish to quote...

Example: I took out Bob's post as well as "Are you under stress, Bob?" from your original message.

With all due respect (Stern%20Smile), is it really that much more difficult?

^ yeah, just take out what you don't want

..if the link to a member's reviews in their Profile could be restored, it would be a tremendous help.. right now it's discouragingly hard to track down non-Collab (and even Collab) reviews  ..and of course the Latest Posts feature is still sorely missed-- with the current Last Post feature, if the same member posts twice in a row in a given thread, it is easy to miss.. this is important to have when team members are discussing something

thanks for all the work behind the scenes by M@x and graphix, it must be difficult trying to please everyone

A quick solution to that is to quote someone normally and before you post, just manually delete the parts you don't wish to quote... Example: I took out Bob's post as well as "Are you under stress, Bob?" from your original message. With all due respect (Stern%20Smile), is it really that much more difficult?

Not difficult at all.

"Very useful in long discussions" - Also, very useful in preventing interminable quote-pyramids.

Definitely missing the most recent posts list.  I often used it to find out what was happening on the forum at any given time.

I prefer when the ads appeared in the first person's post at the bottom. Now that it is seperated it makes the page too wide and I can't read an entire post without scrolling over (just on the first page of a thread).

Anyone else in my boat?

Also, I don't know if it's been mentioned before, but the link from each member's forum profile to their reviews (and bio, if applicable) was really useful and awesome and I wish it were back again.

Erm, I am having trouble viewing some letters again, particularly diacritics.  This had been solved, but now it's broken again.

Example from the above:

happening before the forum upgrade.  I get the same problem when trying to add hyperlinks to PMs.

Aye...this has been happening all over.

And in the quote above it looks quite disfigured...aside from the common error.

Kinda like that.

Hey, when you click post options on a comment with a quote box at the top the options bar goes behind the quote box, making it impossible to click edit or reply etc.

Also, you can't get to someone's reviews by clicking on their name in the forum.

It would be useful to have a summary of the issues with the new forum design compared to the old, so that I can take it to mailto:M@x - M@x . Exclude any new suggestions.

Anyone up for it?

Can I suggest M@X looks into the Active Posts system, I feel there's a bug in it.

Usually if I last visited PA one hour ago, and I access Active Topics when logging again, it shows me the posts made in the last hour. But, all of sudden, a glitch happens and the active posts are reset completely (bringing the active posts to the exact time --> also meaning there are no new posts).

This is not a serious bug and it doesn't mean one can not adjust his last Active Posts down the interval he desires (15 minutes, one hour, a day...etc.), but seeing recent posts at a certain time after, as you change the page, it jumps to T minus zero...sounds glitchy.

One important thing I just noticed: Character encoding is set to ISO-LATIN-1, but should be UTF-8. You can see it in this thread - the accented a in "Ivn" is not rendered correctly in the first post of this thread page. Once you choose "UTF-8" as character encoding in the browser's view menu it is rendered correctly.

EDIT: Maybe it's correct now and M@x already switched ... please let M@x know, he'll know what do do about it.Smile
