Just a question for all you Floyd lovers.I have both Stereo & Mono versions of the debut 'Piper @ the gates of dawn''.I listern hard & long at both versions & really prefer the Mono issue.

You don't get the full effect with mono. Listen to Interstellar Overdrive. It's meant to be listened to in stereo. The album took advantage of the stereo revolution!

Maybe your right about ''Interstellar overdrive'' but the sound effects throughout the albums sound more easily defined in mono,just to add,the mono recording seems a lot louder than the stereo version.Saying that i generally listern to the album from the 'Nice pair' set.

I think i have a mono copy of Van der graaf generator 'The least we can do is wave to each other' as well,or it may be a re-mixed version,i can't remember without looking.(re-mix being a strange term in those days).

Part of the psychedelic awesomeness of the album comes from listening to it in stereo!

I only have the stereo remastered version, I guess I'm a bit boring What does the mono version sound like? Any direct notable differences?(although, being that I'm a young progger, I don't really know the difference between the two really.)

Same here, and I'd like to know as well...

I just can't see how it'd be better in mono considering how the music switches channels on certain songs (example, towards the end of Interstellar Overdrive).

It's the same with 'In Search of the Lost Chord'. When I listen to it with headphones, there are many parts in the music that sound goes from one ear to the other (like Ray Thomas' flute, on... Legend of a Mind? I can't remember.)

I think mono is where both speakers are playing the same thing at the same volume, and in stereo each speaker is independent... not sure though, am i right?

Well I Haven't Heard The Mono Version, So I Will Have To Say Stereo.

Great LP, my favourite is WYWH and DSOTM.

The mono 'Piper' is far superior to the stereo. With the mono you hear what Syd wanted you to hear. In '67 , stereo was still considered to be a fad and would have been left to the men in white coats.What the f**k did they know about how it should have sounded. The mono is how the group wanted it to sound, complete with manic guitar noises on Interstellar' that is lost in the bland stereo mix. That said, I feel that 'Flaming' benefits from the stereo treatment, but that's the only track that does.A real psychedelic punk masterpiece.

that's not really a question. but anyway, i only have the cd and its in stereo and it sounds fine. i want to expand my musical collection before rebuying old albums in mono. Wink

stereo for sure... does anyone by chance watch rock star on cbs? Marty covered a Pink Floyd song last night..cried at the end....he did a great job...i cant remember the name of the song though..somethng about wishing you were there or something..
