Trespass is a good choice, but best follow-up has to go to Rush...if we're talking about biggest jump in quality from the debut to the sophomore effort, anyway.

Images and Words took my breath away on 1st listen, and I've been Dream Theater loyal ever since.

either between DT or ELP, i just listened to Images and Words yesterday after not hearing it in a while, i appreciate a lot more now that i am a prog head, the stuff that i used to find boring are now fantastic

Although it would have been easy to vote for Trespass, I voted for Time and a Word because I feel that it was at least equal as a follow-up; that it showed serious "progression" of the band, and a hint of what was to come.  It also happens to be a sentimental favorite of mine...

Peace.

Time and A Word for me I think, I completely like that album, the production seem a bit lacking, and the guitar's are a bit to far back in the mix, but I think it's one of the best albums from 1970

Trespass is the second-best second album, but that's because the first album was utter crap (Yes's first album was good aswel). I can't compare Trespass with TAAW because they sound completely different

Tempted to go with Acquiring The Taste, but having yet to hear the debut album, I could not. So I went with Tresspass, since we all know how unrepresentative From Genesis To Revelation is.

I think the giant leap forward from Genesis 1st(Genesis to revelation) to Tresspass was huge. They made the biggest step. Personally, though I would have given it to VdGG follow up lp...a huge leap from Grey Aerosol.. to At Least We Can Do...easily surpasses Genesis

Absolutly Genesis 'Trespass'Compared to their 1st album, this was certainly a revelation, without a doubt.Best move Jonathan King ever made was pass on them.Thank you John Anthony.

"Acquirng the Taste" is my fav GENTLE GIANT album, so I voted that way.
"Trespass" and "Images & Words" would both be followed by it, or tied for that matter.
3 Great albums!

Peace & take care

3rd Impression... The questions is what's the best followup album.  The first ELP album was a debut... Tarkus is a followup...

I, of course voted for Tarkus!

For sheer progression, it has to be 'Trespass' for me too.

However, on a slightly different track, 'In The Wake Of Poseidon' by KC was one of the oddest follow-ups in that it was virtually identical in pacing/sound to ITCOTCK - listen to both of them side-by-side & you'll see what I mean.

Third Impression thinks ELP was better than Tarkus - Thus he shouldn't vote for Tarkus - But he will have done ! - This is the nonsense that ELP fans perpetuate - I MUST VOTE ELP, I MUST VOTE ELP (Repeat until your head falls off)...........

I would have voted for IQ (The wake) but for the fact that the improvement from Tales from the Lush Attic is less than that of Genesis Revelation.....Trespass,

TF and 3rd don't bother voting because we know that you see every poll as ELP Versus the Rest of prog.....It's getting tiresome.....

Indeedy Swinton!.. I guess that's the reason why I hate everything of ELP now.. (and ELP - ELP gives me a freaking headace!) really.. It really is irritating..

ARGH!

the only elp man I love - because of his widespread musictaste, his private has probably something more then just.. elp.. - is richardh..

Wheres 'Mirage' by Camel??  That was a great follow up album.

I voted for Fugazi by Marillion with some hesitation. I think Tarkus, Images and Words & Trespass were all excellent follow ups.

I was tempted to go for JT-Stand Up but I voted for Yes-Time and a Word. The reason being is that the jump onto the third album ( The Yes Album)was also sizeable.Whereas,IMHO,all the other bands in the poll gradually evolved.Yes went on in leaps and bounds. The same could be said of Genesis but Yes were still doing
cover versions. So my vote is also for their progression beyond the sophomore album.

Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb.

GG - ATT. A huge leap forward towards the band's unique style and a truly cracking listen. Pantagruel's Nativity is one of the purest most perfect examples of what Progressive Rock really means.

Acquiring The Taste. Gentle Giant leaped to another level of sophistication on this one at " the risk of being unpopular". I love everything about this album the photo, the liner notes, the cover art and of course the Music. Gentle Giant in it`s infancy. A foreshadow of what was going to be heard from these guysin the coming  years. Classic progressive rock from the heyday of the genre.

I think that Van der Graaf Generator should have been included this poll (natch). The progression from 'Aerosol...'(orginally intended to be a Hammill solo album) to 'The Least We Can Do...' is very evident.

Tarkus for me too. I also have a weakness for "In the Wake of Poseidon", but I'd never say it was the best possible follow-up to the monumental ITCOTCK. How do you follow up such a masterpiece?

Posted By: Blackleaf

Images and Words. It's still widely held as their best, and WDADU as their worst. Can there possibly be a better follow up, contrast wise?

I totally agree with you. VdGG really found their sound on "The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other".
Other very good 2nd albums:
Can - "Tago Mago" (which they themselves counted as their 2nd album, because "Soundtracks" is just that, a collection of soundtracks that were originally not intended to be on an album).
Amon Düül 2 - "Yeti".
Guru Guru - "Hinten".
Embryo - "Embryo's Rache".
