It's Rush without a doubt.
Their influence on the more heavier side of prog is massive, and their music is fantastic.
And Geddy Lee's voice sounds good in my ears!

Rush. Most of these other Art Rock bands wouldn't be around (at least not in the same form) without their influence.

Rush is good, but I like Steve Hackett better. Asia and Kansas are pretty awesome - hard to to nail it down to one best overall

Some weird stuff in there! Anekdoten? Steve Morse Band? Djam Karet? I must not understand the definition of this genre.

For God's Sake, Steve Hackett ART ROCK????????????????????

His works are much more complex than 90% of the most progressive bands, from Voyage of the Acolyte until To Watch the storm he has done more for Prog' Rock than most of Prog' musicians.

Kansas is a mixture of Symphonic Progressive wirh Hard Rock and a bit of USA Folk, has no relation with Art Rock either.

This term created to identify the simplest form ofr Progressive Rock is turning into a taylor's box, where people throw everything that aren't able to categorize, you can't compare Steve Hackett, Kansas or even Rush with Styx, Asia or Roxy Music.

I guess I just don't understand what 'art rock' means. I used to use that term for bands like Bauhaus and Velvet Underground, who were simultaneously in the art world and the music world. The type of band that would be just as likely to play at a gallery as at a club.

art rock  Genre of rock that uses larger forms and more complex harmonies than other popular styles; occasionally quotes examples from classical music. Also Progressive rock.

Once upon a time (and why the need to change and be all encompassing?), in the Uk it was the name given to the music coming from Roxy Music and Be Bop Deluxe, i.e. one end of the Glam Rock brigade, hence avoiding inclusion of Mud, Gary Glitter, even Slade, etc from the other end. Indeed Queen and David Bowie (Aladdin Sane, Spiders period) were also dumped here, while Sweet were just outside. I do believe the term 'art rock' might mean different things either side of the Atlantic - I had one US correspondent swear blind he was using the term in 1966 or 7 interchangeably with 'progressive music'.

If you read the Musical papers from the early seventies - Genesis/Yes/Floyd and ELP were often described as "Art Rock" as well as Progressive Rock...It is used now as a device to separate Rush from Mainstream Prog.....

Art Rock definition has changed since the origins of Prog', in the first years as Swinto well said it was almost a synonim of Prog, but it has changed, and GEPR describes it simply but clearly:

Art Rock

The very border of progressive music in which more commercial styles of music were created at a different angle. Not quite progressive but almost.

Bands

http://www.gepr.net/ba.html#BEBOP - Be Bop Deluxe , early http://www.gepr.net/em.html#ENO - Eno , Roxy Music, etc.

I don't think that Steve Hackett, Kansas or Rush fit here.

Anekdoten is even further away from that...Dark King Crimson-ish prog, not even close to commercial.

Wouldn't want you dead. I love both these groups too. Talk Talk on the strength of their last 3 albums would get my vote. Not sure how Radiohead would fit in. Perhaps a new sub genre could be created for them and similar (actually - are there any similar??) groups

I would undoubtly vote for Rush (surprise, surprise), albeit most bands displayed for choice aren't deemed to belong in the Art Rock genre, at least from ProgArchives' perspective, which should detain a significant authority beyond chaotic assertments, considering it harbours the active poll. Despite of invariable opinions diverging from the site, one should take a condescending sense of concern to knave the content onto familliar frames, so as to at the least elude the sort of tumult imminently instigated.

I voted STYX, because of their beautiful life performance escpecially last year @ Arrow Rock Festival

I Have to say it's a very good list.

My second fave is Rush followed by Kayak, Kansas and APP

I don't really agree that Steve Hackett should be in this genre, but I guess he is.

And that's who I voted for.
