A good example is the person who reviewed Mars Volta's Frances The Mute album... twice.

 — After hearing so much about these guys, I decided to get one of their albums, what I was treated with was a hour session of the WORST prog-rock has to offer. The singer for the Mars Volta (some stupid name like Omar or Cedric or something), sounds like a girl, if I heard this on the radio without listening to deeply I would think that the vocalist is a girl, but surprise surprise, it's some faggot with an afro. The whole CD manages to crap on about some spanish crap or another, I'm sure all the pseudo-intellectuals are going to rush out, listen to this crap and analyze it's crappy features. Jesus, if only they played more Opeth on the radio instead of this overused trash.

I agree that the album is boll*x and that the emperor is indeed naked. But the singer doesn't sound like a girl but like a braindamaged Robert Plant.

 — How can anybody say it's one of Pink Floyd's best albums?! I heard just one song of it- "Learning to Fly"-OH MY GOD! Even I could play it better. I have all of Pink Floyd, except for that album. Even though it's brilliantly planned, the band should review how to play instruments and sing. Personally, I judge the music itself, no matter how complicated it is or how it's planned out. Plus, the only worthy Pink Floyd album after Roger left is "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason". Pink Floyd is only Floyd without Waters.

Another highlight. The two closing sentences are amazingly misplaced (says my handbook of textual coherence).

I wouldn't review TMV yet... to me Frances the Mute is a very hard one to get into, but admittedly it does have its brilliant parts. Would take a lot more time for me to digest, but it just COULD turn out to be a "grower"...
As for the reviews meant here, they tend to turn the review section of this site into a joke and a bad one at that.

— as a young, new fan to KING CRIMSON, i can only hope that this review is of use to youthful future fans of the band. i'll put it this way - as soon as i heard this album (and this was the first KC album i ever heard after being told that if i liked TOOL, i should know my roots) i immediately started an infatuation with this band that will last for as long as Uncle Bobby Fripp lives (and let that be forever). this album is the type of melting pot of synthesized sounds, harsh, industrial-esque beats, perfect guitar and great lyrics/vocals that recently established bands can only dream of hoping to achieve. the sheer scope of some of the songs is breathtaking, as the track "the power to believe, II" proves. i believe as a new fan of progressive music that this is essential to my collection, but realistically next to LARKS' TONGUES IN ASPIC and RED it simply isnt essential. hence my 4 stars. but, if youve ever listened to and loved TOOL, buy this album. |

— unfortunately, THE MARS VOLTA are one of those few bands who think they are better than they actually are. while their "DE-LOUSED . . ." was a collection of songs arranged around a dubious yet enticing concept/theme, "FRANCES THE MUTE" is a loosely constructed, no-concept-to-be-found-in-this-so-called-concept-album journey into complete and utter musical masturbation. granted, the first track isnt bad, but it can hardly be called a masterpiece. as a previous reveiwer stated, the only reason this album seems so appealing is because the current musical climate is so lacking in truly inspiring concept albums/ progressive albums. the last track is also great, but at 30 minutes, it makes the listened feel as though KING CRIMSON did it better with "lizard", from the album LIZARD. the biggest problem, and this is immediately obvious, is the lack of cohesion. there is no continuity, flow, or cohesion. one stuggles to listen to this entire album, unless one has a penchant for pharmaceuticals (which would be a big no-no in the drug-free world of THE MARS VOLTA). after hearing "DE-LOUSED . . .", it's obvious this band is destined for big things. but perhaps they would be better off taking lessons from bands that have done it better, instead of assuming they know how to pull off a decent prog rock album right off the bat. |

— Wow... I write this review after just listening to this album for the third time. What a piece of crap. I can't believe I wasted $20 on this piece of crap. Seriously. What the hell. I paid money for a music cd and what do I get, high pitched vocals and some pussy wailing on and on in Spanish. Ignore this crap, go listen to a good band, such as Opeth.
No offense to the reviewer caught in the middle with King Crimson...it's not a great review either, but it's really only here because it got caught in between. |

The mental image I have of reviewers like this is that of some spotty 14-year old kid who's sitting alone in his room behind his pc, he obviously has no friends and certainly no girlfriend (who wants some ugly retard like that). The kids at school laugh at him because he's bad at sports and his mother provided him with extremely bad taste in clothing. His parents want him to be a rocket scientist or a real smooth lawyer, but he'll probably end up like an third grade employee in a grocery store instead.
Frustrated as he is he alternates his hourlong obsessive masturbation sessions with writing of his anger with real lame reviews on random sites hoping to finally get some recognition.

There were different origins of this name. It obviously is a mix between Gentle Giant and a great singer Ronnie James Dio, who is far from being a giant.
I would also like to apologize for creating this topic in the first place. You see, I am new on this site and in progressive music in general, and yet I create a thread, claiming that certain reviewers have to be shot, while I haven't contributed anything to this wonderful informative site.
I don't want to sound like a complete arse, so I shall just add that most of you guys are doing a great job reviewing albums and highlighting your honest opinion. I was introduced to the joys of Prog music through early Genesis and WYWH/Animal era of Pink Floyd, and I just keep discovering great new and old bands, thanks to you. I even know some bands my dad never heard(Gentle Giant, Camel, etc.).
EDIT: I apologize for my poor English and possible grammar mistakes. I am only 17 years old and still learning English as a third language.

Still, creating this topic in general is nothing to apologise for methinks. Some reviews can easily turn into rants or become offensive in some way, sometimes even unintended. Threads like these can remind anyone who wants to review on the importance of staying correct.

Well, thanks a lot, James Le... I'm from Poland & still learning
English;) I hoped that "collaborator" didn't want to advertise THAT
CLASSICAL album for the fans of TOOL... It sounds (for me) like heresy,
but I'm just a 21st century schizoid man...

I listend to frances and wasn't impressed - BUT in no way would I review the CD because I didn't get beyond the 2nd track - I always listen to music LOUD and TMV frightened me at the volume I had it at !!!
Those reviews were obviously by people who were also frightened, so why review ?? -
However - I would be wary of anybody who thinks that TMV are the BEST prog band ever............

Sorry, if I get this wrong. But what's actually wrong with the 'The Power to believe' album by KC?
I'm listening to it right now, and it is an absolutely amazing album.
Or was the fact that this bloke compared it to Tool that caused all the 'drama' (don't know a different word for that right now, so please don't feel offended )

All the KC reviewer was saying was that fans of Tool would probably like "Power to Believe". Nothing wrong with that statement. I think he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I agree! TMV is the finest prog act since the death of original prog of
the 70's. I think Tangerine Dream's Force Majeure from 1979 really
defined the end of true progressive rock at that point. There was
Marillion, but let's face it, they're not very prog, and their music is
mostly crap.
That's how I see it..

ok, first of all, i have no idea why my KING CRIMSON review was deleted . . .
even stranger, though, is that i cant believe why my THE MARS VOLTA
review was deleted . . . i said nothing offensive, i gave it 2 stars
because i believe it truly is "just for the fans" and i gave a clear
and concise reason why i didnt think it was particularly good . . .
if this is the kind of community this is that deletes legitimate
reviews simply because they arent the status quo, then i believe i will
no longer be visiting this otherwise useful site . . .

 — I just got my hands on a nr mint original copy of Atom Heart Mother. I have never heard this album before but had heard that it was one of Floyds more ‘difficult’ albums to listen to. I put it on and was really only half listening as I was working on my computer at the same time. Parts of it reminded me of Zappas orchestral/prog/jazz stuff. After side on had finished I went to put side 2 on and then I realised I had been listening to the whole of side 1 at 45rpm!!!! This I have never managed to do before even after a few jars!! I shall give it another listen tomorrow - surely it will improve. Martin
Well, I don't think Martin should be shot, but he should not have wasted useful Web server space with such a silly review. Why didn't you at least wait for a few days and listen to the album a few times to give yourself time to form a proper opinion, Martin?

Crow, I tried in the thread with reviews to defend your review. I believed it was a legitimate one and there is no excuse for deleting it. I thought it was especially important considering how positively biased the reviews were--some of them seemed to be lacking in objectivity, so I felt it was very important to have the other side represented.
I hope you resubmit, but I can't blame you in the slightest if you don't, because what happened to your review was wrong. If you need anyone to keep your back, please let me know.

I'm a Mars Volta fan and I suppose you could be right about the 'just for the fans' comment, sometimes it's hard to step back and take a subjective listen, so you could be right.
What I am absolutely certain of, however, is that your reviews were 100% ok IMHO. certainly not insulting or ridiculous like some that I've seen on this site, yours were quite eloquent and insightful.
I for one would like to think that the participants on this forum are generally intelligent and open-minded and the ones that are not are in an extreme minority. It really appears as though someone has slipped up somewhere by removing your reviews, I strongly urge you to re-submit those reviews and more in future. At least I'd be intrested in reading them.

Nothing particularly wrong with this review-it was just deleted by accident.

RADIOHEAD Ok Computer Review by reed lover @ 11:09:41 AM EST, 2005-01-16
— So the Radiohead fanatics got their way and an Alternative Rock Group gate-crashes the Prog Rock party. I have listened to this album 3 or 4 times in the last few days and I still do not get it! I do not hear any Prog Rock. Sure the playing is top notch and many of the "right instruments" are present but this is a typical Alternative Rock package.Political commentary, satire and black humour mixed with odd electronica interludes and self- conscious "anti-Guitar God" riffing. The whole album is absolutely dreary. Thom Yorke is the least happy vocalist I have ever had the misfortune to hear and each song just grinds on and on.Only the xylophone intro to "No Surprises" stops me from giving the album "one star"-I MUST BE GETTING SENTIMENTAL.Sorry folks this certainly doesn't do it for me and I dock one star because I do not think it is a Progressive Rock album.

Well Reed I think your review wasn't cohesive, you kind of slaugthered the album and then you took one star of it because you didn't considered it prog. 1 star or even 0 star would be more consistent with your review
Anyway I never considered it a bad review, I didn't feel the need to speak on your behalf, since your articulate enough. I do remember an addition to this, or was that another review?
People are to eager to report badly written reviews, without looking at the intend of the reviewer. In the case of your review it was clear, you listened and didn't like the album. In the case of the Storm Crow it's equally strange, since it was a valid review, and a reminder for Tool fans that it might fit their taste.
So Crow bring it back in please

Actually this review made me laugha bit, mainly because I'd done the same (with Butthole Surfers 'Hairway to Steven' LP) , so at least it was entertaining.
Would there be any complaints if Martin had said that it sounded like Zappas orchestral/prog/jazz stuff only slower if he'd listened to it at 'normal' speed? (which it kind of does) Sometimes 'impulse' reviews can be just as interesting as extemely analitical ones.

Obviously, the standard of your degrees must be lower than the standards of those you are referring to.
I'm quite sure that your skills of conversastional German were a lot
better if you spent your days (and/or nights) on a German prog rock

EMERSON LAKE & PALMER (ELP) Emerson, Lake and Palmer Review by http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=52 - frenchie @ 6:26:56 PM EST, 3/29/2005 PROG REVIEWER
 — This one is for Karnevil 9, i hope he reads it. After some ELP bashing and being told not to listen to them by my friends i thought i would see what all the fuss was about. I only know about this bands sound and career from things i have read on this site, so i wasn't completely sure what to expect. I certainly didn't expect that lush distorted droning sound to kick off the album, that is really nice. There is some strong drum work here but i think it is ruined by some very over dramatic piano work, but i managed to sit through it, once the piano bit is over there is a lush roar that sounds likea dragon waking up and then some more distortion which sounds kinda heavy and evil! Definetly a good start, i am actually impressed by "The Barbarian". The bass and drum work is very well done! The vocals on "Take a Pebble" are pretty nice, somehow it sounds like a very unique sound that ELP have created very nicely here, and Greg Lake uses a different vocal style to King Crimson which is good because it is the start of a brand new sound and prog direction for each member, quite a big leap for a debut album, they have definetly kissed their previous bands goodbye! The piano work is a lot softer here, with some nice acoustics, which i prefer. I can't remember the last time i heard clapping and whistling in prog, how random, but it's here! The soft sound seems to lack direction, going through different acoustic and piano areas before it settles into a beautiful piano section. The thundering bass kicks in and all sounds good. This track can stretch on quite a bit, but i say, so far so good! There is a nice piano climax just before the 11 minute mark that leads back into some vocals, bringing this track to a brilliant close. The vocals are powerful and full of passion and emotion. "Knife Edge" has some really strong bass and keyboard work, perhaps a sound that i prefer. It can get quite frantic and then flow into more steady parts. The vocals work really well once again. The musicianship here is definetly strong and powerful, sometimes it can be scarily overdone, i prefer them in their less pretentious areas. The first three songs are excellent, but "Three Fates", the track that a very popular forum member is named after, let me down. This track is nothing but Keith Emerson making love to his keyboards for nearly 8 minutes. Sure he has talent but he is just showing off here, and it becomes boring. I managed to sit through this though, it gets interesting when the organ comes in but then it leads back into the same old drizzle. There is a really annoying sound, like someone is winding up a clock which quickly gets repetitive and irritating. I would suggest listening to this one or two times, if it still doesn't do anything for you then the skip button is all you need! "Tank" doesn't do it for me either, another let down, this is just some mindless drum work, followed by some uninterting tag ons from the rest of the band. ELP really overdo it here. "Lucky Man" definetly redeems this album with some nice vocals and acoustic work, yet it has a stupid ending which sounds like you are being chased by an ambulance or something! ELP are definetly talented as well as unique and original. Sometimes they can really overdo it and dont know when to calm down but at the end of the day this is definetly some strong, good and interesting work. Still, i can see why a lot of people make fun out of them! Overall, their are 4 really good pieces on this album, yet it is let down big time by "Three Fates" and "Tank". I think this album just scrapes 4 stars.

Nothing wrong with this review. It's his opinion. BTW For me only "Tank" is a weak track. Everything else is great!

frenchie's review was good.I agree with most of what he said.To me Tank now sounds dated and Three Fates is very self indulgent on Keith's side of things. He correctly praised Take A Pebble, The Barbarian and Lucky Man which are definetely the stand out tracks on the album.

Gaah, I'm left wondering what Nightwish are doing classified as Prog
Metal in the first place...?
Of course I'll get round to reviewing them though, big fan of their music...

Why are there still people like that? everyone have the right to express themselves dammit! frenchie has given his points and his done great, i don't share his opinion by any means, i think "ELP" is one of the greatest albums on prog rock and rock history, now... becasue i said that, do you, karnevil9, expect frenchie will be accusing me of having a bad taste? or bad opinions? or that everyone in the world HAVE to love ELP? damn karnevil, show some respect for others... i am as disappointed as Useful_Idiot and the other 99% people that constantly participate in the forum and visit the site are. Peace
Erik

Agreed, this IS pretty pathetic. There are bands I care a LOT about, but I respect the fact that not everybody likes them. Unlike some people in this thread, I don't want to make everyone else into little clones of me!

It's a good and fair review, Frenchie - personally I think you were on the generous side. KE9 just needs to learn some respect for his fellow forum members, but sadly, I think he never will.
Those reviews by "Breed Lover" are very bad though

 — Man, what the hell is the matter with Jon Anderson! This album prove sht at homosexuals can't sing or write music! Clearly! I mean klisten ot his whiney woman voice, sounds like he's trying to sing like Robert Plant, a cleatrly superior vocalist, but no queer can ever sing like Robert Plant, or stand on stage with such manly integrity. Sweat wouldn't look good on Jon Anderson's gay Chest, only that perfectly fur covered man chest of Robert Plant. Jon Anderson's ugly faggy monkey face is nothing like that perfectly squared Jaw of Robert Plant, and his beutiful thinking eyes penetrate in ways Jon Anderson's never could, and that's not the only thing you want Robert Plant ot penetr... Umm, so Relayer is a terrible album Stay away, uless you like ugly Gay people who can't sing! |
