Porcupine Tree played two days ago at the famous Olympia venue in Paris,(most French chansonniers have played here but also Hendrix, Soft Machine, Miles Davis...) not the best in terms of acoustics but a great athmosphere....BTW before the concert I met PA member Victor 77, whom I've already met this springtime in Carmeaux during the RIO festival and who is on a romantic trip to Paris with his girlfriend. a little bug before the concert, the venue wouldn't let concert goers take food inside....(new rule) and as most people as myself and Victor who had made some sandwiches didn't knew that we had to leave the food which ended on a big pile doomed to get thrown away, a disgusting symbol of this throwaway society, they should at least have "stored" the food in a decent way... now the good news, the suport act was Anathema, whom I didn't knew, nice band with a genuine 70's look and sound. I especialy liked the last song which reminded me of "Solar Music" with some spaced double guitar work. 2O minutes break : seeing for the first time a queue to the men's loo twice as long as the women's one, because the pissoirs were out of order speaking about beer drinking and bladders..... time for PT: I have a few PT records, but I am not really familiar with their repertoire. I suppose it was the same set list already posted here in another thread of the tour:

It was the first time I saw PT and it was a great show, very dynamic from start to end one of these bands with fantastic interplay, with a special mention for keyboader Richard Barbieri ..the sound was a little muddy but good...great lightshow..good mixture of acoustic songs , spaced instrumentals and headbanging ...the only thing I didn't like was the videos especially the opening track ..all in all a great concert ------------- Tadpoles keep screaming in my ear "Hey there! Rotter's Club! Explain the meaning of this song and share it" |

I was lucky enough to see the same gig last night (Wednesday) in Amsterdam. Anathema were a real surprise for me. Truly a revelation. I believe they used to be grunting metal merchants, but underwent some epiphany and embraced prog full on, and not even prog-metal, but the real thing. I too was impressed with their last song. Was it the same one, I wonder.
Great PT show, they still fly the flag. Their recent albums may have seen an increase in tight, asymmetrical metal guitar riffery, but they escape the prog-metal label by virtue of the vocals. I'm sure I'd get on with Dream Theatre a little better, if only the vocals weren't so growly. ------------- Perception is truth, ergo opinion is fact. |

It really was a great show, despite the poor sound quality. I didnīt really enjoy Anathemaīs set, but it was a good opening anyway. Porcupine Tree was really different, displaying high energy from the beginning to the end, with some classic tracks included as encore ("Waiting"). Itīs the 3rd time I see them live, and they are improving each and every day, thatīs for sure!
I should say that I got Gavin Harrisonīs first record (with a bassist named 05 ric (does anyone know something about this man???), "Drop", experimental but not noisy pop songs with great soundscaping; not a masterpiece, but quite interesting (with guest stars Robert Fripp and Dave Stewart)
