hi everyone i have a non-prog related tech question. I recently got a dell inspiron 1520 laptop and was excited because people on websites talked about playing like fear and far cry on high settings and not having any problems. Ive tried playin far cry and its barely playable and i can barely even play fable! ive tried updating drivers and stuff but nothing works. i cant seem to find out why my games are sucking. hopefully someone with the same computer or with some knowledge can help me out.

Try posting this in Tech Talk next time....

As for your problem: games and Dell Inspiron don't seem to match in a lot of cases...

the question is: which graphics chip does your laptop have?

The integrated Intel and ATi graphics chips are not good for gaming, the Nvidia option is better. Also the faster processor and more memory will also be better for gaming. Of course all those are hindsight options that you can do nothing about now, but if you've got the slower processor, the integrated graphics and no memory upgrade then it will be slow.

You could try turning off any security software you have running while playing the game.

What?

Fear and Far Cry will definitely only work with Nvidia and ATI chips.

A Go8600GS shouldn't have problems with games like Far Cry and FEAR, this suggests to me that you've got some very bad drivers for it, I'd download the latest graphics drivers from Dell and if they don't work find some 3rd party drivers.

If the hardware is up to snuff, then if you're having issues with the games, it's down to software.

So...

1. Drivers.
2. Operating System add-ons (Direct X versions, other software that might potentially interfere, such as virus scanners, etc).
3. Tweaks (should only be necessary for extra fps or other obsessive performance metrics, but most gaming forums are full of these).

Have you tried some of the tips here; http://www.tweakguides.com/Farcry_1.html - http://www.tweakguides.com/Farcry_1.html ?

This isn't the only tweak site I know of, but it's one of the most comprehensive - and, as you can see, has a lengthy article on this very game.

The important thing is not to stop questioning.
