Kevin Gilbert: Musically gifted, uplifting, cynical, underrated and powerful. This melodic genius deserves an Appreciation thread, I do believe. His Solo work, Giraffe, and Toy Matinee projects (amongst others) were excellent! If any of you out there don't own "Thud" or "The Shaming of the True," GET UM'! Some of the most beautifully crafted pop/rock albums out there.
Kevin Gilbert R.I.P. (1966-1996)
I just got five of his bootlegs, brilliant stuff! Some unreleased solo material from the giraffe era.

The man was a genius, and was taken from us way to soon.He left us with little music of his own but I have been lucky enough to acquire almost all of his catalogue, with the exception of The Kaviar Sessions.

Agreed - curious where a Brit can purchase the more obscure material?

I got everything I have (Thud,The Shaming of the True,Toy Matinee Special Edition,Thud Live, and the Giraffe compilation)through his website.
His early NRG album you can download fro free at KG's official site.Giraffe's Progfest 94 performance of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway I have never been able to find, but acquired mp3 files from a friend. The two original Giraffe albums are SUPER rare. The Kaviar Session is always sold out on his website, and I know of no other place to get it.

I have a friend who has the Kaviar Sessions. I'll ask him to send it to me soon, I've heard bits and it's brilliant! Dark, but brilliant.

I have heard two songs from it,and know it is very, very different than his previous work.
I have searched for years for it,it's almost obssessive.

You ever hear his song "If Ever rain will fall"? I wonder how it never got onto the Giraffe albums, it's certainly better then a lot of the ones on album "Giraffe."

Yes I have.I have an album of rarities compiled by a fan of his and that song is on it.

I've found the Giraffe 'compilation' CD available from the Gilbert official site, very much an 80's pop rock album, and no where as good as the 90's mature rock. There are three tracks from the Progfest 94 Giraffe performance on the Musea Records release of the same name - and certainly superior material.
In the meanwhile: just ordered the Kaviar Sessions. Anybody tell me about the Rubinoos?

Does anyone know where I can lay my hands on the Progfest '94 recording of "Lamb Lies Down"? I would be ever so grateful. Thanks!

Rather than start a new thread, I'll tack this related one on here.
Anybody checked out the tribute concert recording of Shaming of The True, on the Kevin Gilbert Estates website:
http://www.kevingilbert.com/Shaming_Of_The_True/Shaming_Concert_Claremont.htm - http://www.kevingilbert.com/Shaming_Of_The_True/Shaming_Concert_Claremont.htm
?
Line-up: Nick D'Virgilio (lead vocal, drums), Mike Keneally (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Rick Musallam (guitar, vocals) Bryan Beller (bass), Chris G (drums) and Marc Ziegenhagen (keyboards).
I hate to ask: but after D'Virgilio's major praiseworthy and noble efforts to get Shaming Of The True fully produced and out on disc, is he making a big mistake taking the lead vocals in this performance? One of the most painfully prog vocal recordings I have (now unplayed) in my collection, is of Neil Morse and D'Virgilio unplugged and singing largely Spocks Beard numbers. Now D'Virgilio we have letting loose his vocal chords here, on what I've come to consider as sacrosanct music, especially with Gilbert setting the high original standard. Shaming is a rock opera that deserves major exposure, but IMHO this ain't a good start the process.

Completely agree!!
The Shaming Of The True is an album that deserves more... Even you can listen the practice tracks performed with D'Virgilio in the vocals, and I can't find it very promising.
It's a shame that an excellent and unique album like The Shaming Of The True doesn't have the recognition that deserves, and as you said, this is not going to help, at least IMO too.

^ Nick D'Virgilio was largely responsible for getting Shaming of the True produced and released in the first place ... I think that he deserves better than being bashed here because his vocal performance on an official SB bootleg sucked. He is a really good vocalist.

Yes, I'm hot saying that D'Virgilio is not important in the development and deployment of The Shaming Of The True, he was crucial in the production of the album, his relation with Gilbert was very close and he contributed very much even in the composition, but I feel (very very personal opinion) that the Tribute Concert is not according to the greatness of this album. I feel a minimalistic sensation about this performance, but, well, I hope this is not going to be like this...

Well...the people playing the material(all gifted in their own right),aren't Kevin Gilbert. So of course it's not going to be as stunningly brilliant as KG's recorded work.It was a tribute to the memory of a friend,a good man,and a musical genius and I respect and admire that.
On a side note...finally got The Kaviar Sessions. It took me a while to appreciate it,it is so different from Kevin's other work. But that is what he was trying to do.

I think the vocals are just poorly mixed on the practice sessions.

Only one man could do tSotT other than Gilbert:
Gabriel.
