What are some album covers that you hate but the album is musically awesome?  Personally, I hate the cover to "Going For the One".  They should have stuck with Dean's artwork.  It's very lame and takes away some of the fantasy aspect, as weird as that might sound.  I just love the captivating covers to TFTO and Relayer.  GFTO's cover is poor.  Hipgnosis did a bad job IMO.  Musically, it is superb, though.

Most one-coloured primitive uglies like THE BEATLES "White Album" or something. I SEE the artistic statement here, but I DISLIKE artwork like this

I think it would have been artistic.. not to mention reflective of the year of release.. 1968... if they had changed the art work of the White Album...  and made it purple.

'Presto' by Rush. Very good album, rather silly cover.

'Duke' by Genesis. Their last great album, with a cover that ranks alongside Invisible Touch as their worst artwork. IMO.

Pink Floyd - Meddle.  Great album, but what the...is that supposed to be on the cover?  The Final Cut is another one.  Great album, boring cover.

Oh and the Steve Hackett covers with impressionistic paintings of Steve.  I much preferred Kim Poor's earlier fantasy based artwork.

I'd have to say the cover of 1000 Degrees Centigrades by Magma's sort of a let down, considering the coolness of the music.

Solid gray with black text? Man, that's innovation.

I generally dislike the kind of artwork you find on the INSIDE OUT label. STARDUST WE ARE by the Flower Kings is a pretty good album, but the cover (like most of the band's) looks hideous. Same with the Tangent. The band themselves seemed pretty pleased with A PLACE IN THE QUEUE (apparently its design reminded them of Roger Dean) but I think it's third-rate surrealism, just like THE MUSIC THAT DIED ALONE and THE WORLD WE DRIVE THROUGH. (The music's MUCH better than the packaging.) It's all just conveyor belt, mass-production "fantasy" imagery, just like most of the prog metal covers I've ever seen! Give us a break.

how about Steve Hackett's Wild Orchids with a pic of his face and a female body. Hackett with boobs just looks disturbing.

Well, musically I don't like the album much, but most people do.

other albums:
_Yes - The Yes Album : just a band pic, sooooo cheap.
_Serú Girán - Bicicleta: such an inspired work but again a band pic.
_Roine Stolt: The Flower King : *shudders*, thank god the music is excellent.
_Iron Maiden - Dance of Death: totally different, in a terrible terrible way. What were they thinking?
_Flower Kings - Stardust We Are is pretty bad, but Paradox Hotel is cartoony silliness that doesn't fit as this is their darkest album.

I've just looked over the top 100 and the albums who would really need better covers are imo

Depois do Fim (Bacamarte)
Live Scenes From New-York (DT)
Playing the Fool (GG)
In A Glass House (GG)
The Human Equation (Ayreon)
Made In Japan (Deep Purple)
Script For A Jester's Tear
Hot Rats (Zappa)
You Cant Do That On Stage Any More (Zappa)
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
A Live Record (Camel)
Lateralus (Tool)
Valentybe Suite (Colosseum)
Snowgoose (Camel)
Second Life Syndrome (Riverside)
Free Hand (Gentle Giant)
Barclay James Harvest Live
Last Epic (ACT)
Different Stages (Rush)
Kronologia (Crucis)
and there are a couple more of dubious ones.

I'll have to agree about The Snow Goose, it's way too forced and mechanical.  That album needed something pastoral and evokative to fit the music...the cover of Moonmadness or along those lines would have been much better.

I'm not too sure about covers, but 2112 has probably the funniest band picture of Rush I've ever seen, from Geddy and his "I'm not a rockstar yet" long hair to Neil's black satin smoking jacket. 100% classic picture for a 100% incredible album.

I always thought that although it is interesting, the cover art for In The Court of the Crimson King was unsettling and unindicative (is that a word?) of the amazing music inside. But I do agree that the cover has become iconic, and thinking about it, I probably wouldn't have it any other way.

I always thought CLOSE TO THE EDGE was superb, at least when it was an LP. You must remember that the (plain green) outside of the gatefold cover had an uneven surface, which was very pleasant to the touch. Then you got Roger Dean's intriguing picture inside. And then those charming colour pictures of the band members (plus producer Eddie Offord) on the back. Simply delightful!

hold on now-- I like the David Greenslade, and I also really like the Thrak cover though it is more like abstract art

I know.... it's a great cover...  ELP haters just can't stop with music.. or the personalities... but they even have to stoop to the level of f**king with the Armadillo "Tarkus'...  some people are never satisfied and have to go after our sacred cows of prog.

What a travesty... insulting an album cover like Tarkus.
These types of people must have affection for album covers like this:

I am really surprised that they themselves didn't buy up all the albums and have them burned. This cover rates up there with any BeeGee's cover.

The Emerson Lake and Powell album cover is pretty lame and unimaginative (in the same way  90125 and Big Generator are). Plus, many people think it reads "666" when you turn it upside-down. Now it makes perfect sense: Emo is the Beast! LOL

Going back to Yes, I've always hated the cover of Talk, too.

Their is some covers that i don't like at all, but the albums are trully great:
Albatros - Garden od eden - 1978
Focus - Hamburger concerto - 1974
Jean Luc Ponty - Enigmatic Ocean - 1977, and maybe others i can't remember now.

Nil Recurring. Awesome music, but the cover seems more like a photograph, than an album cover.

I've never heard this album, but I've looked at the artwork before and it's one of the worst covers I've ever seen.  It looks like a third grader did it in MS Paint....

I almost had a seizure after viewing that.  Angry

What happened? Did a can of paint explode on the album cover?  Confused

Wow, Living Colour. Vivid is very good. I kind of like the artwork. It's a punk, graffiti New York styled cover, if that's a term. Cult of Personality is great.

And for my album, I'll go with The Enid's In The Region of the Summer Stars. I don't know, I just don't like that cover. Great album though.

Somewhat agree with this...I do think the artwork was pretty "amateurish"...I tend to love the album cover if the album is great, anyway.

This topic is tough for me, because of that reason.  A few people said "Aquiring the Taste" is a gross cover, but the music is so brilliant I just can't help but find the cover brilliant as well.  Bias becomes me when I hear the music...I love every album cover for every great album.

A bad album on the other hand...well, ofcourse thats not 90124 by YES I would be referring, that album has a brilliant cover and amazing musicianship.Confused

What exactly is on the cover of Acquiring the Taste? The only thing I can think of is a tongue licking someone's bottom, but that seems too gross to be possible! (for an album cover)

Nonetheless that's what i've always assumed it to be.

The Beatles Yesterday and Today "Butcher Album" cover in the US would take some beating for grossness.  Mind you there have been a few pretty gross covers over tghe years.

Hmmm...I'm not sure what album cover you guys have for Acquiring the Taste, but it sure looks like an apple to me.

Grow up and get your minds out of the gutter.  Tongue

It is an open mouth, tongue hanging out and drool coming down over an apple.

I'm far too old to grow up i'm afraid.  Smile

The cover has looked that way to me for 35 years and looking at it again now it still looks like that.

Well, if you open up the album cover....

It was probably meant to be ambiguous, though.

Don't like Roger Dean?  Just listen to Eloy Colours while looking at Roger Dean artwork and it transports you to another world.  Don't like Roger Dean, good heavens, what will you guys come up with next.  Confused  Prog and Roger Dean go hand in hand.
