Does anyone know how the Beatles got the distortion sound on Happiness Is A Warm Gun. There is a song called Yes It Is by the Beatles, is that song using volume swells on guitar or is it another instrument.  A lot of there songs use some interesting guitar tones.

Yes It Is uses a volume pedal, something like a wah wah.. They used it on the Help album. George Harrison would play his guitar through a leslie speaker a lot to create an organ sounding guitar.  George Harrison also used drones a lot on Rubber Soul, backward guitar on Revolver and extreme distortion on Revolution. Which I think the later is how they got the guitar sound on Happiness Is A Warm Gun. Don't forget about the sitar, intentional feedback  and the 12 string guitar. They were not the greatest technical players but they did a lot for the guitar in rock music.

"Yes It Is" is a volume pedal. Which bit of "Happiness" are you referring to - there is some fuzz guitar there.
