I was told this about 4 weeks ago but asked to keep it quiet - seems that the secret is now out from a US webcaster :

If Jobson worked with Zappa, I should know about it, but I'm stumped. Any album in particular?  ------------- Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

 For some perverse reason Jobson is one of the pretty boys (rhs with Patrick O'Hearn and Tommy Mars??) on the front cover of Zappa's Zoot Allures - although Jobson and O'Hearn don't appear on record (rather than the cover ) until later Zappa recordings - you'll find Jobson's name coming up in the credits of some of those Can't Do That On Stage Anymore 2 CD sets. ------------- The best eclectic music on the Web,8-11pm BST/GMT THURS. I'm a great fan of Jobson since his extraordinary contributions on the 'Air Cut' album for Curved Air [ one of my favourite progressive rock albums]. Also, did get to see him in late 76 with Zappa in NYC. In fact, very nearly 31 years ago [ I can hardly believe it], on All Hallows eve at Madisson Square Gardens - what a night!
This UKZ project sounds exciting but WHY NO BASS PLAYER ! ! I was less of a fan of the later UK albums for that reason. Surely he won't make the same mistake again. Let's hope the virtuoso drummer wants a 'real' rhythm section. Perhaps we could post a few suggestions e.g. Jeff Berlin , Jonas Reingold, Jimmy Haslip or Craig Newman from Aust. Tony Levin would also fill the bill, would he not. But there must be many young guns who would jump at the chance. ------------- Looking still the same after all these years... mrgd |

I've just got around to looking at the UKZ website and Trey Gunn is credited as playing the 10 string guitar - that aint no Fender Jazz, Rick or what have you . One can only assume he will fill the void using that instrument, but will it? P.S. - I'm having a wonderful time on this thread and it doesn't need the intervention of anyone else, really. I believe it's used as a supplement to a bass. Listen to KC's The Power To Believe because he and Mastelotto are the rhythm section. E  -------------

Eddie himself had this to say on his website concerning his relatively short time with Frank: "When I joined Zappa's band in 1976 we shook hands on an arrangement—I said to him "Don't fire me for a year, and I won't leave you for a year." I left exactly a year later (to the week) and moved back to England to form 'UK.' I knew when I joined Zappa that I would learn everything I would learn, and gain everything I would gain from the experience in a year. To me, it was a college course in American studies, from which I graduated at the age of 22"

| Slartibartfast, you should really listen to ZAPPA IN NEW YORK! Not only is it a superb live album, it also features one of Jobson's best ever keyboard solos, the utterly gorgeous "I promise not to come in your mouth". (Don't let the title put you off.) |

This sounds terrific. However, I remember not just Jobson, but John Wetton having major contributions in the song writing department with UK back in the 70's. Still all in all the new band could be interesting. There seems to be a good cross section of talent to take the project in a variety of directions. ------------- Deafmoon |

UKZ Premier Concert Postponed The debut concert of supergroup UKZ has been postponed to better coincide with their new album release schedule and to recognize the current labor disputes. The concert was originally scheduled for January 25, 2008. "With the escalating union strikes, Los Angeles is a precarious place to stage a major event right now," says group founder Eddie Jobson, "There is a ripple effect that impacts the whole community. Furthermore, the album is still a few months away from release and we decided it would be better if more people knew our music ahead of time. Both issues have factored into the decision." The newly formed group features Eddie Jobson (UK, Roxy Music, Zappa) on keyboards, Trey Gunn (King Crimson) on Warr guitar, Alex Machacek on guitar, Marco Minnemann on drums and Aaron Lippert on vocals. The band members are currently writing and recording their self-titled debut album. Trey Gunn plays a Warr Guitar, I use to play one myself, it is like a Chapman Stick in that it is a tapping instrument with both guitar and bass sides www.warrguitars.com - They even have a Trey signature series, Trey gets pretty nuts with it at times having one strapped on that he plays and one on a table that he taps, not sure what the point is to be honest. I have a feeling it will...but when every self-imposed quasi-deadline is missed and with the history of UK and Jobson's non-performance in mind, you certainly have to wonder.
The most promising sign is the interview with him in the forthcoming Classic Rock magazine.

Alex MacHacek is one of my favourite guitarists - and perhaps his love of the polyrhythmic in all his great solo recordings, that the math rock may be attributed to? Also Alex's first album had this great feeling of the early 80's Mothers fronted by Allan Holdsworth, hence a link back to the first UK line-up. ------------- The best eclectic music on the Web,8-11pm BST/GMT THURS. It will be held in Pittsburgh , PA. August 23-24 , 2008.

So, what did you all think of TU-95?
I was heavily reminded of King Crimson, not anything remotely like U.K. It's a good tune, but not what U.K. fans were expecting, or at least, this U.K. fan. Marco Minneman is a monster, that's for sure. Machacek's solo was a bit brief and not very complex.
More to come next month, I guess.

It was, as you say, not what I expected. But the moment I heard it I remembered that UK itself was originally conceived as a reborn King Crimson. Holdsworth joined after Fripp dropped out. In light of that it actually makes sense, doesn't it? MAG |
