Subject: Mike Portnoy's backing vocals ?

It's a personal issue of mine and maybe mine only (who knows) that when Mike Portnoy takes to the microphone I don't hear any positive gain to the vocal department of Dream Theater.
Maybe I just don't like his voice or maybe he is a little off key whatever it is  I'm hearing something unmusical in the quality of his vocals I mean its hardly a Steve Walsh , Robbie Steinhardt vocal arrangement Dream Theater have.
I`m somebody who thinks James Labrie is a fine singer he deserves better back up ,  either way I felt I better ask you people what you think,    should Mike leave the Mic alone in future ?

I hate them. I couldn't tell you from a technical perspective what's wrong with them, but they just don't sound good.

I think his backing vocals are bad, he's not a good singer, especially on Constant Motion from Systematic Chaos.  I don't think they should let him do backup.

John Myung should do the backups instead.

I don't think they should have lyrics/vox at all actually.

I did like The Dark Eternal Night..but that was meant to be raw. He just wants to do more then he's supposed to...his ego is quite large. LaBrie is great...he doesn't need any backups.
Petrucci doesn't seem to be for a backup.

I rather like them actually.

The music is better without them, but I don't think they're awful.

Forgive me. Nothing annoys me more than his voice. He cannot sing. He doesn't even sound good doing the metal stuff. Some musicians should not venture out in areas they will never succeed.

He doesn't sound good on songs such as Constant Motion where he is sort of yelling, but when he and Petrucci harmonize vocals it can sound really good.  Listen to the rehersal of Run to the Hills on the Special Features from the Budokan DVD if you don't believe me.

As long as he doesn't do a falsetto like he did on Six Degrees, that was atrocious.

I think sometimes they are good, sometimes they are just okay. I've never found them to be awful (I even like the falsetto in The Test That Stumped Them All). Anyway, while I do prefer LaBrie's voice, I think the addition of Portnoy's vocals can add a nice contrast to the songs, especially the heavier ones like The Glass Prison.
I also like his voice when he does harmonizing parts with Petrucci, although it would be cool if Rudess and Myung would get in on the vocal harmonies and add that dimension. I've heard Rudess do vocals before and I think he has a nice voice, not sure about Myung though. It would just be cool to have John Myung sing because he's John Myung.

He does a good job, it's not a Queen choir, but it's ok.

I think as backing he's fine

but when he's trying to take center stage and be "metal" it kind of kills it

when I saw them live semi-recently he sang the first section of Take the Time and sounded fine Smile

Not great by any stretch of the imagination. I'm not even that mad on Labrie either as much as I love DT.

I think he's good as a backing vocalist, BUT, on SC, it doesn't always fit with LaBrie's voice.

I like DT, but Portnoy vocals are awful.

Portnoy has a terrible voice, besides his bad background vocals on DT albums I don't like his singing on the second Transatlantic album either. It's the only flaw on that otherwise flawless album.
