I just never got the appeal of those types of shows.  I can see why people think it's funny and stupid - I laughed at the antics the first couple times I saw it, but it soon became apparent that the whole thing was contrived and formulaic, and thus became boring rather quickly.

I find it very sad, truly, that such a show exists on broadcast television whose mission is to serve the public interest.  So much of television celebrates ignorance and perpetuates societal ills in more ways than i have the time to get into.  We could have television to enlighten and teach, instead we offer the public sensationalized filth, to sell products, and create the next generation of morons.  It's a vicious cycle.

It doesn't make me laugh.  It makes me furious.

I should point out, I'm not calling anybody here names.  I'm talking about the people who are frequently guests on those shows, and the losers in the audience who clap and cheer while the people onstage talk about who they're cheating on, whose baby they're having, etc.

I enjoyed Jerry Springer for a short while when it was first shown on UK TV but I got bored with it pretty quickly. Watching the hard of thinking hitting each other soon loses its novelty value, as funny as it can be when you first see it on mainstream TV.

I did do quite a good Jerry Springer imitation on a wedding party. There wasn't a slapstick cake fight so maybe it was not as convincing as I thought it would be LOL .

I liked it for a while, but after some time... it's still hilarious, even if I don't want to admit it Embarrassed It's so obvious and over the top that it becomes funny again.

What I don't get is why there are so many people willing to go on there and look like complete fools. Sure that stuff happens, but why the need to go on TV about it? Frankly, if I was invovled in some crap that would fit on the show, I wouldn't want to go on and make a spectacle of myself.

You know, I was thinking something similar.  The first season I can understand, maybe some people were caught by surprise.  But after the first season, most people had to know they were in for something bad when they appeared on the show.  If I ever got a call from the Jerry Springer show I would come on the show, but when Jerry said "Chester, I have a surprise for you", I would say "No Jerry, I have a surprise for you, after I got the call from your show, I went out and killed all of my family and anyone I've ever known.  There will be no show today."  Tongue

Strange as it may sound, I don't think the show would be cancelled... on the contrary, I think it would bring in masses of viewers. LOL  Not exactly what you want to achieve.

By the way, Jim Garten is my father, my mother and my gay lover and he especially likes to be called Shirley. Shocked

Crap, redneck, lowest common denominator (and that's woefully low) sensationalistic TV that celebrates dysfunction in American society, and panders to the low-brow tastes of modern neanderthals, while providing a far-reaching public platform  for the most screwed up, evil and ugly (not just outwardly) among us.Dead

Absolute mind-numbing, idiotic garbage -- I'd rather watch paint peel than watch Springer and his pathetic ilk.  A total waste of time.Thumbs%20Down I deserve far better from any given half hour of my (limited) lifespan.

And I don't watch Survivor, reality cop chase or car crash shows, or suscribe to celebrity pain magazines, or the Weekly World News, either.

Dumb and more dumberer....Wacko

No offense though, if you're watching it in the clinical, detatched manner of a scientist dispassionately taking notes, as he observes the rats tearing each other apart in the overcrowded cage. Hey, it's a kind of anthropological study....Geek

Of course that's the case -- you're not really like the dumb-as-posts guests, or the rabid, foaming, hooting and bellowing studio audience, are you? You don't actually encourage stupidity, and the continuing degradation of TV and art by watching that stuff, right? A steady intake of such visual bile, violence and verbal excrement won't affect you, will it? Wink

I just realized when i watched it last night, that it's gotta be scripted theater, and not real.
Because, i mean... People doesn't act like that, do they? If they do, it's sad!

Dude, welcome to the real world. 95% of raelity shows are scripted. Every talk show was filmed a lot earlier before broadcasting. All provoking is planned, and made sure it doesn't offend anyone. It's all just crap entertainment.

It's a complete waste of time, just like reading every reply to this thread.

Although I never bought it, I found the WWN amusing; it was supposed to be absurd, and it succeeded.

The Jerry Springer show is the highest cultural achievement ever. It even beats mud wrestling.

Sometimes it makes me vomit and sometimes makes me laugh, what annoys the hell out of me is the audience egging these obviously insane people (thats is if its not scripted) i saw this fat women come out and the crowd shouted for her to get naked and when she did they were like EWWWWW!!! and laughed at her.
But a really intresting show is the GG Allin one search for it on youtube and discuss (sorry to highjack thread but its easily the weirdest one i've seen)

Give any quantity, bigger than a dollar, of money and/or fame to certain people and they will do anything. It's disgusting.

Do you think Springer weighs his studio audience before tbey come in? Perhaps he stipulates a minimum weight of 25 stone..

Sorry, I dont mean to fat bash, but I watched JS the other night on cable, and the guest was this enormous white rapper, who was trying to kick the crap out of his equally huge bodyguard, for sleeping with his obese girlfriend. Springer invited his hamburger stuffed audience to share their wisdom, which they did, in the form of little raps.. Gems such as:

"I see it all the time,
A lady taking crap
Listen up mother
You aint all that!"

I paraphrase, of course..

Springer is a nasty piece of work who cashes in on Americas intellectually disadvantaged trailer park population. That said, I cant bring myself to hate him. Perhaps because his intention is so blatant and brazen, unlike hapless UK talk show pr!ck Jeremy Kyle, who actually believes his own bullsh!t.

ClapClapClap

we have a version in the UK....it's called the Jeremy Kyle show, and in one sense, its even worse than the Jerry Springer show.... although the message is essentially the same, its more understated (in a typically British kind of way) and not as over the top....

...because of this, I actually find it more disturbing and incidious....Ouch
